Wailea

Sunny, polished, and built around five consecutive world-class beaches

Budget $0-$0/night

Wailea sits on the dry south shore with five white-sand beaches connected by a 1.5-mile paved public path. The neighborhood runs along Wailea Alanui Drive, a manicured boulevard lined with resort driveways, condo towers, and the Shops at Wailea, an open-air mall reachable on foot. Ulua Beach, 8 minutes walk from the central hotel strip, is Maui's best easy-access snorkel spot with healthy coral and consistent turtle sightings. Polo Beach at the south end of the path takes 20 minutes to walk and draws far fewer crowds. The golf courses here, Wailea Gold and Wailea Emerald, sit above the coast with unobstructed views toward Molokini Crater, 9 miles offshore. Maalaea Harbor, where most snorkel boats depart, is a 15-minute drive north on Pi'ilani Highway. Kahului Airport sits 30 minutes away. Rain is genuinely rare on this side of the island. The south shore logs 300-plus sunny days annually, which is why resorts built here first. The tradeoff is cost: everything in walking distance carries resort markup. The nearest real supermarket is Safeway on Pi'ilani Highway, a 10-minute drive. Restaurants worth crossing town for include Monkeypod Kitchen at Wailea Gateway Plaza and Nalu's South Shore Grill for local plate lunch on the fringe.

Walk times
  • Ulua Beach snorkel spot 8 min
  • The Shops at Wailea 10 min
  • Polo Beach 20 min
  • Maalaea Harbor (snorkel boat departures) 15 min
Skip if: you want local culture, affordable everyday food, or any escape from the resort pricing bubble
Local tip: The Wailea Beach Path is fully public even though it runs through resort grounds. Walk it at 6:30am before the chaise lounges appear and the beaches feel completely empty. Polo Beach at the south end consistently draws the fewest people of all five.

Kihei

South Maui's best-value base with three beach parks in a row

Budget $0-$0/night

Kihei runs along South Kihei Road for about 7 miles from the sleepy north end down to the Kamaole Beach Parks at the south. Kamaole I, II, and III sit back-to-back along the southern stretch, all public, all free, all excellent. Kamaole III has the best parking and full lifeguard coverage. The neighborhood is busier and less curated than Wailea, which starts just 10 minutes south, but that is the point: local plate lunch spots, grocery stores with real prices, and no resort surcharge on a bottle of sunscreen. The Azeka shopping centers on Kihei Road have a Long's Drugs, Foodland, and a dozen casual restaurants. Pi'ilani Highway parallel to South Kihei Road gets you to Kahului Airport in 20 minutes without touching resort traffic. The north end of Kihei, near Maalaea Bay, is windier and less beach-friendly, so stick to the Kamaole section. Sunset from South Kihei Road looks across to Kahoolawe and Molokini on clear days. Snorkel spots like Five Caves are a short drive toward Makena. The area works especially well for families who want beach access without paying Wailea prices, and for longer stays where having a kitchen and a real grocery run actually matters.

Walk times
  • Kamaole Beach Park III 5 min
  • Kamaole Beach Park I 15 min
  • Azeka Shopping Center (Foodland, Long's Drugs) 8 min

Skip if: you want a polished resort experience or cannot stand traffic and tourist-strip strip-mall energy on South Kihei Road
Local tip: Book on the south half of Kihei near the Kamaole parks, not the north half. North Kihei is cheaper but it is windy, rocky, and mostly a drive-through corridor. You will end up driving south to the beaches anyway.

Kaanapali

West Maui's classic resort strip, 3 miles of beach and world-famous Black Rock sunsets

Budget $0-$0/night

Kaanapali runs along a 3-mile crescent beach on the west side, fronted by Kaanapali Parkway and backed by golf courses and the open-air Whalers Village shopping center. The beach here is genuinely excellent: fine sand, calm water most of the year, and the volcanic rock of Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) anchoring the north end where snorkelers find sea turtles and tropical fish year-round. Whalers Village sits mid-beach and is walkable from most accommodation. Restaurants there range from casual to upscale, and the nightly cliff diving ceremony at Black Rock draws a crowd at sunset. Lahaina, the historic town 3 miles south, sustained catastrophic damage in the August 2023 wildfire and is still in active recovery with limited options on Front Street. Kahului Airport is 45 minutes east. During peak season from December through April, whale watching boats operate along this coastline with humpbacks visible from the beach without binoculars. The area is more expensive than Kihei and has less character than Paia, but the beach quality and sunset exposure are consistently excellent. Napili and Kapalua are 15 to 20 minutes north if you want quieter alternatives at a similar price point.

Walk times

  • Whalers Village shopping and dining 8 min
  • Lahaina town (partial recovery post-2023) 10 min
  • Napili Bay 15 min
Skip if: you want genuine local culture, affordable food outside your room, or non-resort pricing on everyday items
Local tip: Black Rock is completely public and free even though it looks like resort-only territory. Enter from the north end of Kaanapali Beach at low tide and swim around the point. You will find green sea turtles within the first five minutes without paying for a guided tour.

Paia

North Shore surf town with the most character per square mile on Maui

Budget $0-$0/night

Paia sits where Baldwin Avenue meets the Hana Highway, 10 minutes east of Kahului Airport and 15 minutes from the closest decent swimming beach. The town itself is walkable: three blocks of galleries, independent restaurants, vintage clothing, and a general store that has operated here since 1902. Charley's Restaurant and Saloon on the Hana Highway is a morning-to-midnight institution for the surf community. Ho'okipa Beach Park, 3 miles east on the Hana Highway, is one of the world's premier windsurfing and kitesurfing venues, visible from the road overlook when conditions are going. Mama's Fish House, the most talked-about restaurant on Maui, sits 1.5 miles east of town in the village of Kuau and books out 6 to 8 weeks in advance. The Road to Hana starts in Paia effectively, and staying here means zero setup drive on departure morning. Accommodations are mostly vacation rentals and B&Bs on the north shore and up Baldwin Avenue toward Makawao. There are no resort towers here, no pool clubs, no mandatory parking fees. Expect smaller properties, roosters at 5am, and more locals than tourists at dinner. The beach at Baldwin Beach Park, 2 miles west, is a local favorite with good bodysurfing but a rough shore break that is not ideal for children.

Walk times
  • Charley's Restaurant and Saloon 3 min
  • Paia Fish Market 4 min
  • Ho'okipa Beach Park 7 min
  • Mama's Fish House in Kuau 5 min
Skip if: you want a beach directly outside your door, resort amenities, or a relaxed drive to any major Maui attraction
Local tip: Park once in Paia and walk the whole town in 20 minutes. The lot behind Mana Foods on Baldwin Avenue is the least stressful spot. If you have a reservation at Mama's Fish House, arrive 30 minutes early and sit at the bar, which takes walk-ins and has the same menu.

Napili and Kapalua

Two of Maui's calmest bays, consistently quieter and less crowded than Kaanapali

Budget $0-$0/night

Napili and Kapalua sit at the northwest tip of Maui, connected by Lower Honoapiilani Road. Napili Bay is a crescent-shaped cove protected on both sides by lava points. The water stays calm enough for snorkeling almost year-round, and the reef at the north end of the bay holds good coral and fish without requiring a boat or a guide. Kapalua Bay, 2 miles north, is designated a Marine Life Conservation District and is one of the safest bays on the island for young children, almost always flat. Dragon's Teeth at Makaluapuna Point is a 10-minute drive followed by a 5-minute walk through a golf course path: eroded lava formations at the water's edge with views back to Molokai on clear days. Honolua Bay, 5 miles north of Kapalua, becomes a world-class right-hand surf break in winter from November through March, watchable from a 10-minute forest path with no cost. Shopping and dining options in this corner are thin. The Kapalua area has a few restaurants and a small market, but a full grocery run means 20 minutes south or 45 minutes to Kahului. Kahului Airport is 55 minutes each way. The isolation is the appeal: this corner of Maui stays quieter than Kaanapali and costs less than Wailea for comparable beach quality.

Best for

Walk times
  • Napili Bay snorkel reef (north end) 3 min
  • Kapalua Bay Marine Life Conservation District 10 min
  • Dragon's Teeth at Makaluapuna Point 10 min
  • Honolua Bay surf overlook 15 min
Skip if: you need easy daily access to restaurants and grocery stores, or you are planning a Road to Hana trip as your main event
Local tip: The beach access path to Napili Bay runs through resort grounds on the south side of the bay but it is fully public. Walk straight through without hesitation. The north end of the bay near the lava point has denser coral and more fish than the open center, and low-tide morning snorkels in calm conditions are the best time.

Makawao and Upcountry

Cool, forested, and genuinely Hawaiian, 1,500 feet above the resort crowds

Budget $0-$0/night

Makawao sits at the intersection of Makawao Avenue and Baldwin Avenue at around 1,500 feet elevation, where the temperature drops 10 to 15 degrees compared to the coast and the landscape turns green with eucalyptus and sugarcane fields. The town is small, two or three walkable blocks, with galleries, a saddlery, a few reliable cafes, and Komoda Store and Bakery, which has been selling cream puffs and doughnuts since 1916. Get there by 9am on weekdays or the signature items are gone. The Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center on Baldwin Avenue occupies a 1917 plantation estate and runs open exhibitions year-round at no charge. Haleakala National Park's entrance is 30 minutes up Haleakala Highway from Makawao, with the summit at 10,023 feet. Sunrise timed-entry reservations through Recreation.gov book out fast, often 60 days in advance during peak season. The Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm sits 20 minutes up the slope and opens most days. Accommodations here are vacation rentals and small B&Bs scattered along Baldwin Avenue and the surrounding countryside. No resort towers, no beach access within easy reach, and the nearest swimmable beach is a 35-minute drive. The tradeoff is genuine atmosphere, cooler sleeping temperatures without running an air conditioner, and a base that cuts your drive to Haleakala summit from 1.5 hours down to 45 minutes.

Best for

Walk times
  • Komoda Store and Bakery 5 min
  • Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center 12 min
  • Haleakala National Park entrance 30 min
  • Kamaole Beach Parks in Kihei 35 min
Skip if: you want beach access from your room, need resort amenities, or are on a short trip where driving time to every attraction adds up fast
Local tip: Sunrise at the Haleakala summit happens around 5:45am in summer and 6:20am in winter. Book your Recreation.gov timed-entry permit the moment the 60-day window opens because permits sell out in minutes. Staying in Makawao cuts your summit drive to 45 minutes instead of 1.5 hours from the coast.

What is the best area in Maui for first-time visitors?

Kaanapali and Kihei are the two best starting points for a first trip. Kaanapali gives you the classic west-side beach strip, sunset views, and easy snorkeling at Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) without long drives to reach the highlights. Kihei costs less, sits 20 minutes from Kahului Airport, and the three Kamaole Beach Parks deliver solid beach access from around $150 a night.

Is Kihei or Wailea better for a budget trip?

Kihei by a wide margin. Wailea starts at $400 a night and adds resort fees of $40 to $60, while Kihei condos with full kitchens run $120 to $200 and Foodland on Kihei Road handles groceries at normal prices without resort markup. Wailea's Polo Beach is 10 minutes south by car if you want the prettier sand without paying to sleep next to it.

How far is Paia from a swimming beach?

Paia town itself sits about a mile from the water, but the nearest swimmable beaches are Baldwin Beach Park (2 miles west, good for bodysurfing but a rough shore break not suited for young children) and Ho'okipa Beach Park (3 miles east, better for watching windsurfers than getting in the water). For a calm, family-friendly swimming beach, plan a 25-minute drive south to the Kamaole Beach Parks in Kihei.

Can you get around Maui without renting a car?

Technically yes, practically no. The Maui Bus connects Kahului, Kihei, and Kaanapali for $2 a ride, but service runs every 30 to 60 minutes, stops at 9pm, and does not reach Wailea, Paia, Napili, or Upcountry at all. A rental car from Kahului Airport runs $60 to $100 a day in shoulder season and $120 to $200 in peak season from December through April.

Which Maui neighborhood offers the best snorkeling right from shore?

Napili Bay is the top walk-in snorkel spot on the island, calm almost year-round with dense coral at the north end of the bay accessible within three minutes of most accommodation. Black Rock at Kaanapali Beach is the most convenient for west-side visitors, a 10-minute walk from central Kaanapali with reliable sea turtle sightings in clear water. Ulua Beach in Wailea offers the same quality on the south side, 8 minutes along the public Wailea Beach Path.

Is Makawao worth staying in if Haleakala is not on your itinerary?

Yes, if a break from beach-resort energy is what you are after. Komoda Store and Bakery (cream puffs since 1916), genuinely good coffee, and a working local community make the town worth a full half-day even without hiking plans. At 1,500 feet elevation, Makawao is the only part of Maui where you sleep under a blanket in summer and the nights feel nothing like the resort strip.
