South Beach

The energy capital of Miami Beach

Budget $0-$0/night

South Beach runs from 5th Street to about 23rd Street, with Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue as its three main arteries. Ocean Drive is a tourist magnet with neon-lit Art Deco hotels, but the food is overpriced and noisy until 3am. Collins Avenue is calmer and where most of the better hotels sit. Lincoln Road, the pedestrian mall between Washington and Alton, has decent restaurants and shopping. Espanola Way is a small Spanish-style block worth a wander. Stay between 8th and 16th Street for the best balance of beach access, dining, and walkability without sleeping above a club.

Best for
First-time visitorsparty crowddesign lovers
Walk times
  • Ocean Drive beach 3 min
  • Lincoln Road Mall 10 min
  • Espanola Way 7 min
Skip if: You want quiet sleep, you're traveling with small kids, or you hate crowds
Local tip: Book a hotel one block back from Ocean Drive on Collins or Washington. You get the same beach in 3 minutes and actually sleep at night.

Mid-Beach

Resort luxury without the chaos

Budget $0-$0/night

Mid-Beach stretches roughly from 24th Street up to 63rd Street along Collins Avenue. This is the original Millionaire's Row, home to the Fontainebleau, Faena, and Edition. The famous boardwalk runs along the sand from 23rd to 46th Street and is the best place in Miami Beach for a morning run. Restaurants are clustered inside the resorts, so plan to Uber to South Beach or Sunset Harbour for variety. The 41st Street corridor has solid Israeli and kosher dining if you walk inland. The vibe is wealthier, older, and significantly calmer than South Beach.

Best for

Walk times
  • Beach access 2 min
  • Boardwalk entry 3 min
  • Nearest grocery (Publix on 41st) 12 min
Skip if: You want walkable nightlife or cheap eats outside your hotel
Local tip: Day passes at Faena and Fontainebleau pools cost less than booking the room. Stay somewhere cheaper in Mid-Beach and buy a day pass for the resort experience.

North Beach

Where locals actually live

Budget $0-$0/night

North Beach covers 65th Street up to 87th Terrace, with Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue as the main strips. The beach here is wider, cleaner, and has way fewer people than South Beach. Normandy Isle and the 71st Street area have real Argentine, Cuban, and Venezuelan restaurants where prices haven't been inflated for tourists. Ocean Terrace between 73rd and 75th has been redeveloped with a few decent oceanfront spots. The North Shore Open Space Park is great for a walk. Public buses on Collins run every 15 minutes down to South Beach, so you're not stuck if you want a night out.

Walk times
  • Beach 4 min
  • 71st Street restaurants 8 min
  • North Shore Park 6 min
Skip if: You want to walk to nightlife or expect upscale dining at your doorstep
Local tip: Eat dinner around 71st Street and Collins. La Perrada de Edgar and Buenos Aires Bakery serve better food at half the price of Ocean Drive.

Surfside

Quiet beach town with everything you need

Budget $0-$0/night

Surfside is its own small city north of Miami Beach, running from 87th to 96th Street. Harding Avenue is the main commercial spine with a Publix, a CVS, casual restaurants, and Josh's Deli. The beach here is one of the best stretches on the entire island, lifeguarded, family-friendly, and never crowded. The Four Seasons at the Surf Club anchors the south end. Walking everywhere takes minutes. You can reach Bal Harbour Shops in 5 minutes on foot if you want luxury retail. Aventura Mall is a 15 minute drive over the causeway for bigger shopping.

Best for
Familiesrepeat visitorsanyone over 35
Walk times
  • Beach 3 min
  • Bal Harbour Shops 7 min
  • Harding Avenue restaurants 4 min
Skip if: You're under 30 looking for a party scene
Local tip: The Surfside Community Center on 93rd has a lap pool and gym with $10 day passes. Cheaper than any hotel gym and locals barely use it.

Is South Beach safe at night?

Generally yes between 5th and 23rd Street, but Ocean Drive after midnight gets rowdy and pickpocketing is common. Stick to well-lit blocks on Collins or Washington, skip walking alone past 2am, and avoid the area south of 5th Street late at night.

How far is Miami Beach from Miami International Airport?

About 12 miles. An Uber runs 30 to 45 USD depending on traffic and time of day. The drive takes 25 minutes with no traffic, 50 minutes during rush hour. There is no direct train. The 150 Airport Flyer bus runs to South Beach for 2.65 USD but takes about 45 minutes.

Should I rent a car in Miami Beach?

No if you're staying in South Beach or Surfside. Parking costs 30 to 60 USD per night at hotels and traffic on Collins Avenue is brutal. Use Uber for trips to Wynwood or Brickell. Rent only if you plan day trips to the Everglades or Keys.

When is the cheapest time to visit Miami Beach?

May, September, and early October. Hotel rates drop 40 to 50 percent compared to December through April. The tradeoff is heat in the 90s and a real chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season peaks in September, so check storm forecasts before booking.
