01

Mid-Beach (44th to 63rd Street)

South Beach views without the noise

Luxury $220-$480/night

This stretch of Collins Avenue between 44th and 63rd Street is where families actually sleep at night. The beach is wide, lifeguarded, and quieter than South Beach. The Boardwalk runs all the way down to 23rd Street, so you can stroller or scooter past the Eden Roc and Fontainebleau pools without crossing traffic. Indian Beach Park at 46th Street has shaded playgrounds and picnic tables. Publix at 6747 Collins handles snacks and diapers. You get South Beach proximity (a 10-minute Uber to Lincoln Road) without drunk bachelorette parties at 2am outside your room.

Best for
Families with kids 3 to 12 who want beach plus pool plus quiet
Walk times
  • Indian Beach Park 4 min
  • Boardwalk access 1 min
  • Publix grocery (6747 Collins) 6 min
Skip if: You want walkable nightlife or restaurants past 9pm
Local tip: Book a hotel between 44th and 53rd Street. Past 63rd it gets sleepy and you will pay for taxis everywhere.

Key Biscayne

Island life, 15 minutes from downtown

Luxury $280-$650/night

Cross the Rickenbacker Causeway and you are on a 7-mile barrier island that feels nothing like Miami. Crandon Park has a calm, shallow beach with a free family amusement center and a nature center on the north end. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park at the south tip has the lighthouse, bike rentals, and the calmest swimming on the island. The village itself is residential. Crandon Boulevard has a Winn-Dixie, a CVS, and casual spots like Oasis Cafe. No nightclubs, no spring breakers, no traffic noise. The Ritz-Carlton sits on the best stretch of beach but the public access points are just as good.

Best for
Families wanting a resort-style island stay with shallow swimming
Walk times
  • Crandon Park beach 5 min
  • Crandon Park amusement center 8 min
  • Winn-Dixie grocery 10 min
Skip if: You plan to do Wynwood, Brickell, or Miami Beach more than twice

Coconut Grove

Leafy, walkable, and the locals' pick

Luxury $200-$420/night

The Grove is the oldest neighborhood in Miami and the one parents actually choose. CocoWalk on Grand Avenue was rebuilt in 2021 and now has Sweetgreen, Salt and Straw, and a movie theater on the upper level. The Barnacle Historic State Park on Main Highway has a 5-acre yard for kids to run. Peacock Park sits on the bay with a playground and free weekend events. Vizcaya Museum is a 6-minute drive. Streets are tree-lined and traffic moves slowly. Stay near McFarlane Road and you can walk everywhere for three days without a car.

Best for
Families who hate hotel-zone vibes and want a real neighborhood
Walk times
  • CocoWalk 3 min
  • Peacock Park playground 5 min
  • The Barnacle 7 min
Skip if: Beach time is your top priority (nearest beach is a 20-minute drive)
Local tip: Saturday mornings, the Coconut Grove Farmers Market on Grand Avenue is small but kid-friendly. Skip the Sunday Bayfront Market, it gets packed and stroller-hostile.

Sunny Isles Beach

High-rise resort condos with kitchens

Luxury $240-$550/night

Twenty minutes north of South Beach, Sunny Isles is a wall of beachfront condo-hotels along Collins Avenue between 158th and 192nd Street. The beach is wider here than in South Beach, the water is calmer, and the boardwalk runs uninterrupted. Most rentals come with kitchens, washers, and two bathrooms, which matters when you are traveling with three kids. Heritage Park at 19200 Collins has a splash pad. Aventura Mall, the third-largest mall in the US, is a 6-minute drive with a Legoland Discovery Center and an indoor slide tower. Publix at 17501 Biscayne handles groceries.

Best for
Families of 4 plus who need a kitchen and two bathrooms
Walk times
  • Beach access: 1 to 3 min
  • Heritage Park splash pad 10 min
  • Aventura Mall: -drive (no walkable option) 6 min
Skip if: You want restaurants and nightlife within walking distance
Local tip: Book a unit facing south or southeast. North-facing units get less afternoon sun on the balcony, which sounds nice until you realize you wanted that sun for drying swimsuits.

Is South Beach safe for families with kids?

Daytime, yes. The beach itself is great and Lummus Park has playgrounds. After 9pm, Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue between 5th and 15th Street get loud, drunk, and aggressive. We tell families to book Mid-Beach (44th Street and up) instead. You get the same beach for $80 less per night and you can sleep with the windows open.

Do we need a rental car in Miami with kids?

Depends on the area. Mid-Beach, no. Coconut Grove, yes if you want beach days. Key Biscayne, helpful but you can Uber. Sunny Isles, yes, because Aventura Mall and the good restaurants are a 5 to 10 minute drive. Parking at most family hotels runs $35 to $55 per night, so factor that in.

What is the best Miami beach for toddlers?

Crandon Park on Key Biscayne has the calmest, shallowest water in Miami because it is protected by a sandbar. The water stays knee-deep for 50 yards out. Second pick is Sunny Isles between 174th and 178th Street, which is wide and lifeguarded. Avoid South Beach south of 5th Street, the current is stronger there.

When should we avoid Miami with kids?

Skip Spring Break (early March to mid-April), especially South Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Hurricane season peaks in September and October. The sweet spot for families is late April to early June, or the first two weeks of December. Hotel rates drop 30 to 40 percent and the weather is still 78 to 84 degrees.
