Mykonos Town (Chora)

The classic choice: windmills, cobblestones, and zero taxi costs

Luxury $180-$1400/night

Chora is where Mykonos makes sense. You are walking distance from everything: Little Venice sits right on the waterfront along Venetia Street, the famous windmills are a 5-minute uphill stroll, and the old port is 10 minutes on foot. Matogianni Street is the main shopping drag, but duck into the lanes behind Fabrika Square for quieter tavernas with the same views at half the price. Hotels here are mostly converted Cycladic houses, which means small rooms but serious character. Noise from the bars on Enoplon Dinameon Street carries until 4am in summer. Pack earplugs or book a room facing inland.

Best for
First-timers who want to be in the middle of it allnightlife fanscouples without a rental vehicle
Walk times
  • Little Venice waterfront 4 min
  • Mykonos Windmills 5 min
  • Old Port ferry dock 10 min
Skip if: You need quiet sleep before midnight, you have young kids, or you want beach access without a taxi
Local tip: Request a room on the inland side of any hotel near Matogianni. East-facing rooms away from Enoplon Dinameon Street cut noise by roughly 70 percent.

Ornos

The relaxed south-coast base: beach at your door, Chora 10 minutes away

Mid-range $130-$900/night

Ornos sits 3km south of Chora along the coast road and offers what the town cannot: a sandy beach 2 minutes from your room. The bay is naturally sheltered, making it the calmest swimming on the island. The main strip along Ornos Beach Road has tavernas, beach clubs, and a small supermarket. Taxis to Mykonos Town cost 8 to 12 euros and run until 2am, but the local bus from the stop near the main roundabout is 2 euros and runs every 30 minutes in peak season. Hotels here are larger resorts with pools, not charming guesthouses. Families consistently rate this area first.

Best for
Familiescouples who want beach without nightlife noiseanyone who plans to rent a scooter or ATV
Walk times
  • Ornos Beach 2 min
  • Psarou Beach 18 min
  • Bus stop to Mykonos Town 5 min
Skip if: You want to walk home from bars, or you are travelling solo and want the social scene in town
Local tip: Beach clubs on the right side of Ornos Bay charge 20 to 30 euros for a sunbed. Walk 5 minutes left to the public section and it is free.

Psarou

Mykonos's celebrity beach strip: worth it if the budget allows

Budget $0-$2500/night

Psarou is 4km south of Chora and built around one short, perfectly curved bay. Nammos restaurant and beach club anchors the strip. Sunbeds here run 60 to 120 euros per day. The hotels clustered around Psarou Road and above the beach are among the best on the island: Myconian Ambassador and Katikies Mykonos both sit within a 5-minute walk of the sand. There are no budget options here. The beach gets crowded by 11am in July and August, but the water is gin-clear and the scene is genuinely spectacular. Access without a car requires a taxi (12 to 15 euros from town) or the seasonal water taxi from Old Port.

Walk times
  • Psarou Beach 5 min
  • Ornos Beach 18 min
  • Nammos Beach Club 6 min
Skip if: You are budget-conscious, travelling with young children who need space to run, or you want to avoid a see-and-be-seen crowd
Local tip: The water taxi from Old Port to Psarou runs 8am to 7pm in July and August, costs 10 euros one-way, and saves you the taxi queue at peak times.

Platis Gialos

The practical pick: organised beach, regular buses, sensible prices

Mid-range $110-$800/night

Platis Gialos is 4.5km south of Chora and functions as the island's main organised beach hub. The long sandy beach on Platis Gialos Road is served by a row of tavernas and beach bars at prices noticeably lower than Psarou. This is the departure point for water taxis to Paraga, Paradise, and Super Paradise beaches, so your location gives easy access to every south-coast beach without a car. The KTEL bus from Mykonos Town stops here every 30 to 40 minutes for 2 euros. Hotels range from small family-run places to mid-range resorts. For first-timers on a normal budget, this is often the smartest base.

Best for
Budget-conscious first-timersbeach-hoppers who want access to multiple beachesanyone without a rental vehicle
Walk times
  • Platis Gialos Beach 3 min
  • Water taxi dock to Paradise Beach 5 min
  • Bus stop to Mykonos Town 3 min
Skip if: You want old-town atmosphere right outside your door, or you are going specifically for Mykonos Town nightlife
Local tip: Water taxis from Platis Gialos dock stop running around 7pm. If you plan a late afternoon on Paradise Beach, arrange a taxi back because the boats finish before sunset.

Where should a first-time visitor to Mykonos stay?

Mykonos Town is the default answer if you want atmosphere and walkability. But if beach access matters more than nightlife proximity, Ornos or Platis Gialos will serve you better. Both are 10 minutes by taxi from Chora and significantly cheaper per night. First-timers who want both should pick Ornos, which splits the difference between convenience and beach.

How many nights do you need in Mykonos?

Three nights is the sweet spot. Day one: explore Chora, Little Venice, and the windmills on foot. Day two: pick a south-coast beach like Platis Gialos or Psarou. Day three: catch a water taxi to Paradise or Super Paradise. Four nights gives you a day for a boat trip to Delos, which leaves from Old Port at 9am and costs around 20 euros return.

Is Mykonos Town noisy at night?

Yes. Bars on Enoplon Dinameon Street and around Fabrika Square run loud music until 3 to 4am in July and August. Rooms facing the street are genuinely hard to sleep in without earplugs. If you book in Chora, request a room on the inland side facing away from the main lanes. Most hotels will accommodate this at no extra charge.

Do you need a car in Mykonos?

No, but it helps. The KTEL bus covers the main south-coast beaches (Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise) for 2 euros per trip and runs reliably in peak season. Taxis exist but queue badly at midnight from Chora. ATVs rent for 35 to 55 euros per day and are the most practical option for beaches like Elia or Kalafatis, which buses do not reach.
