Mykonos Town (Chora)

The island's beating heart. Walk to everything, sleep through nothing.

Luxury $250-$600/night

Mykonos Town packs the entire Mykonos experience into a labyrinth of whitewashed lanes. Matogianni Street is the main pedestrian drag for shopping and people-watching, and from there you are 3 minutes on foot to Little Venice (Alefkandra), where balconies hang directly over the Aegean. The windmills at Kato Mili are a 5-minute walk from properties near the Old Port. At night, the lanes off Kalogera Street fill with bars and restaurants running until 5am. That is the trade-off: location is unbeatable, but noise travels through thin stone walls. Book a room facing an interior courtyard or plan to join the party. Agia Kyriaki square on the southern edge of town has quieter cafes for breakfast without the chaos. No car needed here. Everything you came to Mykonos for sits within a 15-minute walk.

Walk times
  • Little Venice (Alefkandra) 3 min
  • Windmills (Kato Mili) 5 min
  • Old Port 6 min
Skip if: You need 8 hours of sleep or have young children who crash before midnight.
Local tip: Streets north of Matogianni fill up first. Aim for the southern lanes near Kalogera Street for slightly less noise. Agia Kyriaki square quiets down around 1am, which is manageable compared to the harbor area.

Ornos

Family beach that does not feel like a compromise.

Luxury $180-$450/night

Ornos sits 3km south of Chora and earns its reputation as the most livable part of Mykonos. The beach road running along Ornos Bay has shallow, calm water suitable for kids and nervous swimmers. Bus line B2 connects to Chora in 12 minutes and runs until midnight. Platys Gialos beach is a 10-minute walk east along the coastal path, and from Platys Gialos you can catch water taxis to Psarou, Paraga, and Elia. Ornos has no traditional village center, just a strip of tavernas along the beach road, but restaurants here cook better food at lower prices than in town. Parking is easy if you rent a scooter or ATV. Sunset drinks require a 12-minute bus ride back to Chora or Little Venice, which most people gladly make. Practical, relaxed, genuinely good value.

Walk times
  • Ornos beach 2 min
  • Platys Gialos beach 10 min
  • Bus to Mykonos Town 12 min
Skip if: You want to walk to nightlife. Buses stop at midnight, and a taxi back from Chora at 3am costs 25-35 euros.
Local tip: The water taxi pier at Platys Gialos runs every 20 minutes to Psarou and Paraga. It is the best way to explore multiple beaches without backtracking to town for a bus, and it costs around 5 euros per leg.

Psarou

Mykonos at its most expensive. Worth it if you can afford it.

Luxury $400-$1200/night

Psarou is a 300-meter crescent of fine white sand and some of the most expensive sunbeds in Greece. A sunbed here runs 50-100 euros per person in peak season. The beach road is short: you are either at the beach or at a villa above it. There is no real village. You need a scooter or car because buses do not reach Psarou directly. The nearest stop is Platys Gialos, a 10-minute walk north. Luxury properties here tend to have infinity pools, so you do not always need the beach. Psarou Bay faces southwest, which means excellent afternoon sun and one of the best sunset angles on the island. The beach restaurant has tables on the sand that cost as much as a budget hotel room per dinner. Go once for the experience, then eat at Ornos for the rest of the trip.

  • Platys Gialos water taxi pier 10 min

Skip if: Budget matters at all. Or if you want to walk to dinner without spending 150 euros.
Local tip: Properties on the hill above Psarou rather than directly on the beach road give you the view and the pool at 30-40% less, and you avoid beach-club noise after 11pm.

Elia

The island's longest beach, farthest from the crowds.

Luxury $200-$500/night

Elia sits 8km from Mykonos Town on the southeastern coast. The beach stretches 500 meters and stays less crowded than anywhere else this accessible on the island. It is a long-standing LGBTQ+ friendly spot, relaxed and welcoming year-round. Bus line A from the main bus station in town reaches Elia in 25 minutes, with service until 11pm. A water taxi from Platys Gialos takes 30 minutes and drops you directly at the beach. The main road through Elia has a handful of tavernas and a small supermarket, so self-catering is possible. Sunrise over Elia Bay is genuinely spectacular because the beach faces east. You will need a vehicle for anything beyond the beach, and nights out in town mean budgeting 30-40 euros for taxis. In exchange you get a pace that feels nothing like peak-season Mykonos.

Walk times
  • Elia beach 4 min
  • Bus stop to Mykonos Town 5 min
  • Agios Sostis beach via coastal path 30 min
Skip if: You want to walk to nightlife or do not want to plan transport every evening.
Local tip: The far eastern end of Elia beach, past the last beach bar, is clothing-optional and significantly quieter. Arrive by 10am in July and August to claim a spot without paying for a sunbed (around 15 euros per person).

Agios Stefanos

Near the ferry port, easy on the wallet, underrated.

Mid-range $120-$300/night

Agios Stefanos sits 3km north of Mykonos Town, a 10-minute walk from the New Port where ferries arrive. That alone makes it worth considering for island-hoppers. The village has its own small beach, a handful of fish tavernas on the waterfront, and bus connections to town every 20 minutes (northern routes, fare 2 euros). You can walk into Chora in 25 minutes along a flat coastal path. The area has almost no nightlife of its own, which means genuine sleep. Prices run 30-40% below Mykonos Town equivalents. Expect 120-200 euros per night for a solid room versus 250-400 in Chora for something comparable. You also get unobstructed views of ferries and cruise ships crossing the straits. Good base for people spending only 2 nights before catching an early ferry to Paros or Santorini.

Local tip: Book accommodation on the hillside above the port road for quieter nights and Aegean views without ferry terminal noise. Front waterfront properties face the terminal and wake up to engine sounds at 7am.

Where should first-timers stay in Mykonos?

Mykonos Town. You are 3 minutes from Little Venice, 5 minutes from the windmills, and within walking distance of every bar, restaurant, and sunset view on the island. Yes, it is loud after midnight. Yes, it is worth it for a first visit. Book a room with an interior courtyard to cut the noise, and stay at least 2 nights before deciding if you want somewhere quieter.

Which area is cheapest to stay in Mykonos?

Agios Stefanos runs 30-40% cheaper than Mykonos Town. Expect 120-200 USD per night for a decent room in mid-season versus 250-400 USD for a comparable room in Chora. Ornos is the second cheapest option at 180-300 USD and has a much better beach than Agios Stefanos, which makes it the better budget pick if you are staying more than 2 nights.

Is Mykonos Town too noisy to sleep in?

Parts of it, yes. Streets north of Matogianni and anything near the harbor bars stay loud until 4-5am in July and August. Book a room with an interior courtyard or facing away from the main lanes. The southern edge of town near Kalogera Street quiets down around 1am, which is manageable. If you are a light sleeper, go to Ornos instead and take the 12-minute bus in for nights out.

Which area in Mykonos is best for families?

Ornos. The beach has shallow, calm water with no strong surf. The bus to town takes 12 minutes. Platys Gialos is a 10-minute walk for additional beach options and water taxis. Restaurants along the Ornos beach road are family-run and cost 30-40% less than anything in Chora. Skip Mykonos Town with young children: the cobblestones, late-night crowds, and noise make it genuinely difficult.

How far in advance should you book accommodation in Mykonos?

For July and August, book 4-6 months ahead. Mykonos is one of the most in-demand summer destinations in Greece, and top properties in Chora and Psarou sell out by February for peak season. May, June, and September are more forgiving: 6-8 weeks ahead is usually enough. October onward, many properties close entirely and your options shrink significantly.
