01

Patong Beach

The loud one. Stay here if you want convenience over quiet.

Budget $0-$0/night

Patong is the loudest, most crowded, and most convenient base in Phuket. Bangla Road runs one block from the beach and turns into a neon-lit circus after 9pm. Most hotels sit within a 5-minute walk of both the sand and the action. Thanon Thaweewong runs the full 3km of beachfront. Grab a songthaew to Phuket Town for 50 baht or rent a scooter for 200 baht a day. The beach is cleaner south of Soi Bangla near the Marine Police pier. Jungceylon Mall is a 10-minute walk north and covers everything practical. The tradeoff is noise. Rooms near Bangla Road get traffic until 3am on weekends. Book something on Sai Nam Yen Road or south of Soi Bangla if you want to sleep before midnight. The beach gets crowded from December through February but the shoulder months of May and October are genuinely manageable.

Walk times
  • Patong Beach 5 min
  • Bangla Road nightlife 3 min
  • Jungceylon Mall 10 min
Skip if: You want to sleep before midnight or have young children. Noise and beach touts are relentless from Soi Bangla north.
Local tip: The beach is least crowded at the far south end near Kalim. Walk 20 minutes past the main strip and the crowds drop by half.

Kata and Karon Beach

Quieter than Patong, still social. The default choice for couples.

Budget $0-$0/night

Kata and Karon sit 15km south of Patong and feel like a different island. Kata Beach is a 1km arc of sand backed by Kata Beach Road, lined with restaurants serving proper pad thai for 80 baht. Karon stretches 3km further north with fewer tourists per square meter. Patak Road connects both beaches and has everything within a 10-minute walk. Neither area has real nightlife, which is the point. During October and November, surf breaks along Kata's north end attract bodyboarders but make swimming sketchy. Come December the water flattens and stays calm through April. The songthaew to Patong takes 30 minutes and costs 50 baht. Budget guesthouses cluster on the small sois off Kata Beach Road from 600 baht a night. A Tops Market on Patak Road covers groceries and beach supplies without any drama.

Best for

Walk times
  • Kata Beach 2 min
  • walk between Kata and Karon centers 10 min
  • songthaew ride to Patong 30 min
Skip if: You want a buzzing night scene or need to reach Phuket Town regularly. Songthaews stop running at 6pm.
Local tip: Kata Noi, the small beach just south of the main Kata strip, is 10 minutes on foot and stays noticeably less packed even at peak season.

Phuket Old Town

The most underrated base on the island. No beach, all character.

Budget $0-$0/night

Phuket Town is the only area that feels genuinely Thai. Thalang Road runs through the heart of the Sino-Portuguese old town, lined with 100-year-old shophouses converted into cafes and galleries. Dibuk Road, one block south, has the best street food on the island. The Sunday Walking Street market on Thalang Road draws locals as much as tourists and runs until 10pm. You are 30km from Patong by road, about 45 minutes by songthaew (50 baht) or 20 minutes on a scooter. No beach within walking distance, but the trade-off is authentic food, cheap rooms, and zero beach touts. Accommodation on Phang Nga Road or Yaowarat Road starts at 400 baht for a clean guesthouse and tops out around 2,500 baht for a boutique heritage hotel. Phuket Bus Terminal 2 is a 15-minute walk from the old town center and connects cheaply to the rest of Thailand.

Skip if: You are primarily here for beach time. The closest decent beach is Patong, 45 minutes away.
Local tip: Ranong Road fresh market opens at 5am and is the best food experience on the island. Go before 7am for the full spread of local breakfast dishes at under 50 baht.

Bang Tao and Laguna

Phuket's quietest long beach. Worth it if your budget matches the isolation.

Budget $0-$0/night

Bang Tao sits on Phuket's northwest coast, 20km from Patong. The beach runs 8km and stays significantly quieter than the south. The Laguna complex covers the northern half with interconnected lagoons and a private beach club. South of Laguna, Cherngtalay town on Bandon Road has a Lotus's supermarket, proper restaurants, and a Saturday farmer's market that draws the local expat community. The beach is clean and swimmable from November through April with good water visibility. You will share it with a fraction of Patong's crowd. Getting anywhere outside Bang Tao requires a vehicle since there is no songthaew service. Taxis to Patong run 400 to 600 baht each way and add up fast. Renting a car here makes practical sense. Rooms start at around 1,500 baht for a mid-range pool villa. The family infrastructure around the Laguna area, including kids clubs and multiple pools, is the best on the island.

Walk times
  • Bang Tao Beach 5 min
  • Cherngtalay town center 10 min
  • drive to central Patong 20 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or want easy restaurant access without a car. Isolation here is a feature, but it is also a daily cost.
Local tip: The Saturday Cherngtalay market on Bandon Road sells imported cheese, fresh bread, and Thai street food side by side. Get there before 10am before the cheese sells out.

Rawai and Nai Harn

The local end of the island. For travelers who have visited Phuket before.

Budget $0-$0/night

Rawai sits at Phuket's southern tip, 20km from Patong. Rawai Beach Road runs along a working fishing beach where longtail boats depart for Coral Island and Koh Bon at 1,500 baht per boat. The beach itself is rocky and not for swimming. Nai Harn Beach is 5 minutes by scooter or a 15-minute walk: a small horseshoe bay backed by a freshwater lake with one of the island's best swimming beaches. Calm from November through April. The area has a dense expat community, local markets on Soi Nai Harn, and restaurants serving proper food at 80 to 150 baht a plate. Chalong Circle is 10 minutes north and connects you to the rest of the island via Chao Fa West Road. The drive to Patong takes 40 minutes. You need a scooter or rental car to live here comfortably. Accommodation ranges from 500 baht guesthouses to 4,000 baht pool villas.

Best for

Walk times
  • Rawai seafood restaurants 5 min
  • 15 min walk or 5 min
  • drive to Chalong Circle 10 min
Skip if: It is your first trip to Phuket or you do not want to rent a vehicle. The isolation that locals love will frustrate first-timers without wheels.
Local tip: The Rawai seafood market at the north end of Rawai Beach Road lets you buy fresh fish directly from fishermen and take it next door to a cook-to-order restaurant for a small fee. Do this on your last evening.

Which area in Phuket is best for families with young children?

Bang Tao is the top pick. The Laguna complex has dedicated kids clubs, multiple pools, and a private beach where vendors do not bother you. Nai Harn Beach is a strong second if budget is a concern. It is calm, shallow at the north end, and backed by a freshwater lake that toddlers can splash around in safely. Avoid Patong with young children. Bangla Road is genuinely not suitable for kids under 12, and the beach touts are relentless along Thanon Thaweewong during peak season.

Where should I stay in Phuket to avoid the tourist crowds?

Phuket Old Town or Rawai. Thalang Road in the old town draws a mix of Thais and visitors, but it is nothing like Patong. For real local atmosphere, Rawai Beach Road and the side streets around Nai Harn Beach feel like a different country. The Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road is the exception: it draws a crowd, but even then it is a Thai crowd, not a package-tour crowd. Kata and Karon are the middle ground if you want a beach but less chaos.

Is Phuket Old Town worth staying in if I want beach access?

Worth it if food and culture matter more than sand. The Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road is one of the best night markets in Thailand. The Sino-Portuguese heritage buildings on Dibuk Road and Phang Nga Road are genuinely beautiful. Boutique guesthouses here cost 400 to 2,500 baht, which is 30 to 50 percent cheaper than equivalent Patong rooms. The trade-off is real: you are 30km from the nearest decent beach and dependent on scooters or taxis to get there. Budget at least 300 baht per day for transport if you are beach-chasing from here.

When is the best time of year to visit Phuket?

November through April is peak season and the most reliable for beach weather. December and January are the most crowded and expensive months, with room prices up 40 to 80 percent versus shoulder season. May through October is the monsoon season. Rain comes in intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle, and most days still get hours of sunshine. The west coast beaches including Patong and Bang Tao get rougher surf from May through October. Nai Harn and the east coast beaches stay calmer. October is the transition month and often delivers excellent weather at prices closer to low season.

Do I need to rent a scooter or car in Phuket?

Depends entirely on where you stay. In Patong, you do not need any vehicle. Songthaews cover the beach road and main routes for 30 to 50 baht and everything is walkable. In Bang Tao, Rawai, and Nai Harn, a scooter is essentially required. Scooter rental runs 200 to 300 baht per day from local shops. Car rental starts at 800 baht per day. Grab from Bang Tao to Patong costs 400 to 600 baht each way and adds up fast. International driving licenses are technically required for both car and scooter. Police checks at Chalong Circle do happen, especially during high season.
