Estes Park

The obvious base, and that's fine

Luxury $180-$280/night

Estes Park sits five minutes from the Beaver Meadows entrance and handles 90 percent of park visitors for a reason. Elkhorn Avenue is the main drag, packed with taffy shops and outfitters, while West Elkhorn climbs toward the Stanley Hotel. Stay near Riverside Drive if you want to walk to dinner without driving. The downside: summer traffic on US-36 backs up by 8am, so book lodging with parking and leave early. Avoid the strip motels along Big Thompson Avenue closer to Loveland. They add 15 minutes to the park entrance.

Best for
First-time visitorsfamilies with kidsanyone wanting restaurants within walking distance
Walk times
  • Beaver Meadows entrance 6 min
  • Stanley Hotel 12 min
  • Lake Estes 15 min
Skip if: You hate crowds or want to be on the trail by sunrise without traffic
Local tip: Park your car at the Estes Park Visitor Center and ride the free shuttle to Bear Lake. Saves you the timed-entry permit headache from late May through October.

Grand Lake

The west side that locals keep quiet

Mid-range $160-$240/night

Grand Lake sits at the western entrance on US-34, two hours from Estes Park over Trail Ridge Road. The town hugs Colorado's largest natural lake, and the boardwalk on Grand Avenue has maybe a dozen restaurants total. Book here if you want Kawuneeche Valley moose sightings at dawn or plan to hike the Tonahutu and North Inlet trails. The catch: Trail Ridge closes mid-October through Memorial Day, so winter access means driving south through Granby. Stay near Park Avenue for lake views without paying lakefront prices.

Best for
Repeat visitorswildlife watchersanyone wanting fewer crowds
Walk times
  • Grand Lake entrance station 4 min
  • Grand Lake boardwalk 5 min
  • Adams Falls trailhead 8 min
Skip if: You're visiting between November and May and don't want a long detour
Local tip: Sagebrush BBQ on Grand Avenue is the locals' spot. Skip the touristy places on the north end of town. They charge double for the same plate.

Allenspark

Cabin country with Wild Basin out the back door

Mid-range $140-$220/night

Allenspark is a blink-and-miss-it village on Highway 7, 25 minutes south of Estes Park. There's no real downtown, just the Allenspark Lodge, the Meeker Park Inn, and a handful of cabins tucked into lodgepole pines off Ski Road. The reason to stay: Wild Basin trailhead is 10 minutes away and almost nobody else is there. You can hike to Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls before the Bear Lake parking lot has even filled. Bring groceries from Lyons or Estes. The general store is tiny.

Best for

Walk times
  • Wild Basin trailhead 10 min
  • Allenspark Lodge 0 min
  • Estes Park 25 min
Skip if: You need restaurants, nightlife, or anything beyond a fire pit and stars
Local tip: Wild Basin doesn't require a timed-entry permit and never has, even in peak summer. It's the loophole everyone in Boulder County knows about.

Lyons

The budget play 40 minutes out

Mid-range $110-$180/night

Lyons sits at the confluence of the North and South St. Vrain creeks on Highway 36, 40 minutes from the Beaver Meadows entrance. It's a working town, not a tourist trap. Main Street has Oskar Blues Brewery, a couple of solid breakfast spots like Lyons Fork, and lodging that runs $70 cheaper than Estes Park for similar quality. The drive into the park climbs through the Big Thompson canyon and is genuinely beautiful at sunrise. Worth it if you're on a longer trip and don't mind the commute. Skip if you want to nap between hikes.

Best for
Budget travelersbeer drinkersanyone treating RMNP as part of a Front Range trip
Walk times
  • Oskar Blues taproom 5 min
  • Lyons Fork breakfast 3 min
  • Park entrance 40 min
Skip if: You want to do sunrise hikes. The drive eats your morning
Local tip: Fill your gas tank in Lyons before heading up. Estes Park gas runs 40 cents more per gallon, and the stations on US-36 charge tourist rates.

Do I need a timed-entry permit no matter where I stay?

Yes, from late May through mid-October you need a timed-entry reservation for the Bear Lake corridor and a separate one for the rest of the park. Your hotel location doesn't change this. Book the permit at recreation.gov 30 days out at 8am Mountain, or grab a next-day release at 7pm the night before.

Is Estes Park or Grand Lake closer to Bear Lake?

Estes Park is much closer. It's 35 minutes from downtown Estes to the Bear Lake parking lot. From Grand Lake you'd drive Trail Ridge Road, which takes 90 minutes and is closed in winter. Stay in Estes if Bear Lake, Emerald Lake, or Sky Pond are on your list.

Where should I stay if I'm visiting in winter?

Estes Park or Lyons. Trail Ridge Road closes mid-October and Grand Lake becomes a 3-hour detour through Granby. Allenspark cabins work too, but check road conditions on Highway 7 since it doesn't get plowed as fast as US-36.

Can I stay inside the park?

No hotels exist inside RMNP. There are five campgrounds (Moraine Park, Glacier Basin, Aspenglen, Timber Creek, and Longs Peak) plus backcountry permits. Everything else is in Estes Park, Grand Lake, Allenspark, or Lyons.
