Downtown

The obvious pick, and it works

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Stay between South Temple and 400 South if you want to walk everywhere. Temple Square sits at the north end, Vivint Arena and the Delta Center are five minutes west on foot, and the TRAX light rail runs free through the entire downtown free-fare zone. Main Street and West Temple have the bigger hotels. Edison Street and Regent Street hide the cocktail bars worth finding, like Bar X and Whiskey Street. The blocks south of 300 South get quieter at night. Skip anything west of 500 West unless you booked specifically for a Delta Center event.

The Avenues

Victorian houses and capitol views

Mid-range $110-$200/night

The Avenues climb the hill north of South Temple in a tight grid of letter-named streets, A through V. Stay between B Street and I Street to keep walking distance to downtown reasonable, around 15 minutes downhill. The blocks above 6th Avenue get steep fast, especially in winter. Bed and breakfasts dominate here. The Inn on the Hill on East South Temple sits in a 1906 mansion with capitol views from the upper floors. Pop into Cucina Wine Bar on 1st Avenue for dinner. The neighborhood empties out after 9 pm, which is the point.

Local tip: Walking down to downtown is easy. Walking back up after dinner with a few drinks is not. Budget for a short Lyft ride home.

Sugar House

Where Salt Lake locals actually hang out

Mid-range $100-$180/night

About 10 minutes south of downtown by car, Sugar House centers on the intersection of 1100 East and 2100 South. The neighborhood has the city's best concentration of independent breweries, including Hopkins, T.F. Brewing, and Proper Brewing. Sugar House Park covers 110 acres with a reservoir loop popular for morning runs. The Highland Drive corridor between 2100 South and 3300 South lines up coffee shops, bookstores, and the Tower Theatre for indie films. Hotel options are limited, mostly extended-stay properties on 2100 South, but Airbnbs cluster in the bungalows north of the park.

9th & 9th

The food block

Mid-range $120-$220/night

This is one intersection, 900 East and 900 South, and the four blocks around it. Tiny, dense, and stuffed with the restaurants Salt Lake actually talks about. Pago does seasonal small plates. Mazza serves the best Lebanese in the state. The Park Cafe sits across from Liberty Park, the city's main green space at 80 acres. Most stays here are short-term rentals in 1920s bungalows on streets like Browning Avenue and Harvard Avenue. You can walk to downtown in 25 minutes through the residential blocks of the 6th and 7th South corridor, or grab the 9 bus down 900 South in about 12 minutes.

Is downtown Salt Lake City safe to walk at night?

Yes, between South Temple and 400 South. The Main Street and Regent Street blocks stay busy until midnight on weekends with bar traffic from Whiskey Street and Beer Bar. West of 500 West and south of 600 South gets sparse after dark, especially around the Rio Grande area, so use a Lyft if you are heading that way.

Do I need a car in Salt Lake City?

Not for downtown. TRAX light rail is free in the downtown zone between North Temple and 900 South, and the airport line runs every 15 minutes for $2.50. You need a car for skiing at Alta or Park City, or for hiking in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Hotel parking runs $25 to $40 per night downtown, so factor that in.

How far is the airport from downtown hotels?

About 15 minutes. The TRAX Green Line runs from Salt Lake City International to Arena Station downtown in 22 minutes for $2.50. A Lyft costs around $20 to $25. Most downtown hotels do not run free shuttles, the Sheraton and Little America are exceptions.

Where should ski trippers stay?

Downtown if you want one base for skiing plus city evenings. The Cottonwood Canyons resorts sit 35 to 45 minutes east, and UTA ski buses run from Park-and-Ride lots at 6200 South for $4.50 each way. Stay at a downtown hotel near 200 South so you can walk to the bus stop at the Gateway. Skip Sugar House and the Avenues for ski trips, the canyon access is worse.
