Downtown

Closest to everything, most expensive for a reason

Budget $0-$0/night

Downtown SLC runs along Main Street between 100 South and 400 South, with Temple Square as the anchor at 50 North Temple. Salt Palace Convention Center sits at 100 South West Temple. Vivint Arena is a 10-minute walk west at 301 West South Temple. The Grand America at 555 South Main is the benchmark luxury option in the city. Mid-range chains cluster on West Temple and 200 West. TRAX light rail runs straight through and connects to the airport in about 40 minutes for $2.50. Street life quiets after 10pm but daytime energy is real. Best base if your whole trip centers on the core.

Best for
Conference attendeesfirst-timerscouples wanting walkable access to the Main Street restaurant corridor
Walk times
  • Temple Square 5 min
  • Salt Palace Convention Center 7 min
  • Vivint Arena 10 min
Skip if: You are skiing every day and want a cheaper, quieter base closer to the canyon roads
Local tip: Park the car and forget it. TRAX and FrontRunner cover most of the valley. Downtown garages charge $20-$30 a day, so walking to a TRAX stop saves real money.

The Avenues

Victorian bungalows, quiet streets, 10 minutes north of downtown

Budget $0-$0/night

The Avenues runs north of South Temple Street up to 11th Avenue, between State Street and Virginia Street. Streets are literally lettered A through I before switching to names. B Street and E Street have the highest density of Victorian homes and small guesthouses. Entry comes through Second Avenue and Canyon Road. City Creek Canyon trail starts just east of the neighborhood, giving direct hiking access from your front door. Elevation gain is real here. Driving down to Main Street takes 8 minutes. The neighborhood is almost entirely residential with a handful of coffee shops near Second Avenue. Quiet, safe, zero nightlife.

Best for
Hikerscouples wanting a quieter staytravelers who prefer a residential feel over a hotel tower
Walk times
  • South Temple Street 12 min
  • City Creek Canyon trailhead 18 min
  • Utah State Capitol 15 min
Skip if: You need to walk everywhere or do not want to drive a steep hill back each night
Local tip: Parking is free on every residential street up here. That alone saves $20-$30 per night versus downtown garages.

Sugar House

Local coffee, vintage shops, and the real Salt Lake

Budget $0-$0/night

Sugar House centers on the 2100 South and 1100 East intersection, about 3 miles southeast of downtown. The commercial strip along 2100 South between 700 East and 1300 East has independent coffee shops, used bookstores, and neighborhood restaurants locals actually use. Sugar House Park at 1300 East is good for morning runs around its 111-acre loop. Budget motels cluster along State Street to the west. Drive to Little Cottonwood Canyon for Snowbird or Alta takes about 30 minutes via I-215. No TRAX stop in the neighborhood proper, so a car or rideshare is needed. Feels genuinely local in a way downtown does not.

Best for
Repeat visitorsbudget travelersanyone who wants neighborhood cafes over hotel lobbies
Walk times
  • Sugar House Park east entrance 10 min
  • 2100 South restaurant strip 8 min
  • Westminster University 12 min
Skip if: You are here for Temple Square, conventions, or do not want to rent a car
Local tip: State Street motels are cheapest but the 1100 East side is more walkable. Pay a bit more and stay east of State Street.

9th & 9th

SLC's most walkable food neighborhood in a tight eight-block radius

Budget $0-$0/night

The 900 South and 900 East intersection anchors a compact neighborhood packed with independent restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops. The stretch along 900 East between 800 South and 1100 South is genuinely walkable after dark and feels nothing like the corporate downtown core. Accommodation here is small boutique hotels and inns, nothing over five floors. The University of Utah main gate is a 15-minute walk north. TRAX access at the 900 South and 200 East station puts downtown 12 minutes away. Closest neighborhood to Kingsbury Hall performing arts venue and the Natural History Museum of Utah. Weekend nights fill fast so book early.

Best for
Foodiescouplesanyone who wants to walk to dinner rather than order a rideshare
Walk times
  • 900 East restaurant corridor 3 min
  • TRAX 900 South station 10 min
  • University of Utah main gate 15 min
Skip if: You want a full-service hotel with a pool and fitness center. Options here are small boutique properties.
Local tip: Book weekday nights if you can. 9th & 9th fills Thursday through Saturday when SLC locals come out to eat.

What is the best area to stay in Salt Lake City for first-time visitors?

Downtown is the safest bet. You are within 10 minutes walk of Temple Square at 50 North Temple, the Salt Palace Convention Center on 100 South West Temple, and the main restaurant corridor along Main Street. TRAX light rail runs through the downtown core and the airport line reaches City Center station in about 40 minutes for $2.50. Mid-range hotels on West Temple and 200 West run $150-$220 per night.

Where should I stay in Salt Lake City to be close to ski resorts?

None of SLC's city neighborhoods put you near the ski canyons. Little Cottonwood Canyon (Snowbird, Alta) is 35 minutes by car from downtown and about 30 from Sugar House. Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton, Solitude) is similar. If skiing is the whole trip, Cottonwood Heights or Murray cuts 10-15 minutes off each morning. UTA runs a dedicated ski bus from several TRAX stations starting around $5 each way.

Is Salt Lake City safe to walk around at night?

Downtown, 9th & 9th, and The Avenues are all safe for evening walks. The Pioneer Park area on 300 West has a higher concentration of rough sleepers and is worth avoiding after dark. Stretches of State Street between downtown and Sugar House can feel uncomfortable late at night. Stick to Main Street and the 900 East corridor and you will be fine.

How far is Salt Lake City airport from the main hotel areas?

Salt Lake City International Airport is about 7 miles from downtown, roughly 20 minutes by car with light traffic. TRAX Green Line runs directly from the terminal to downtown for $2.50 each way. Rideshare runs $18-$28 depending on time of day. Taxi is a $35-$45 flat rate. Most downtown hotels are within a 5-minute walk of a TRAX station on the airport line.
