Bull Street & Madison Square

The walkable heart of the Historic District

Luxury $180-$340/night

Bull Street is the spine of the Historic District. It runs from City Hall down through Wright Square, Chippewa Square, Madison Square, and Monterey Square, then dumps you at Forsyth Park. Stay anywhere along it and you can walk to almost everything. Madison Square sits in the sweet spot. You're 8 minutes from City Market, 6 minutes from Forsyth, and surrounded by oak canopies, the Green-Meldrim House, and Sorry Charlie's oyster bar on West Congress. Cobblestone side streets like Harris and Macon are picture-book quiet at night. This is where most repeat visitors end up.

Best for
First-time visitors who want to ditch the car and walk to dinner
Walk times
  • Forsyth Park 6 min
  • City Market 8 min
  • River Street 12 min
Skip if: You want loud bars steps from your door
Local tip: Park free on residential side streets like Jones or Taylor after 5pm. The garages on Bryan Street charge $25 a night for the same spot.

City Market & Ellis Square

Bars, buskers, to-go cups

Mid-range $160-$290/night

This is the loud corner. City Market sits between Ellis Square and Franklin Square, with Jefferson Street as the main drag. You'll hear live bands at The Rail Pub and Wet Willie's most nights. Congress Street west of Bull is bachelorette central. The upside: you can stumble home from Pinkie Master's at 2am. The downside: you'll hear everyone else doing the same. Hotels on Bay Lane and West Bryan are quieter than they look on a map. Avoid rooms facing Jefferson or Congress unless earplugs are part of your packing list. Best for two-night stays where the party is the point.

Forsyth Park (South Historic)

Quiet squares, residential charm

Mid-range $170-$310/night

South of Liberty Street the energy drops fast. Forsyth Park anchors this stretch with its 30-acre lawn and the white fountain everyone photographs. Whitaker, Drayton, and Abercorn run north-south through some of the prettiest residential blocks in town. Mercer-Williams House sits on Monterey Square. Brunch spots like Collins Quarter at Forsyth and The Grey Market sit right in. You're a 15-minute walk from City Market, which is the trade-off. Bring comfortable shoes or rent a bike from Perry Rubber on Broughton. This area suits travelers who want Savannah's beauty without the bachelorette parties.

Best for
Couplesrepeat visitorsanyone who wants to read in a park
Walk times
  • Forsyth fountain: 2 to 5 min
  • City Market: 15 to 18 min
  • Broughton Street shopping 10 min
Skip if: You don't want to walk 15 minutes for nightlife
Local tip: Saturday morning farmers market at Forsyth runs 9am to 1pm year-round. Get there before 10am for the good bread from Auspicious Baking Co.

River Street & Bay Street

Cobblestones, ships, tourist crowds

Luxury $200-$380/night

River Street runs along the Savannah River below Bay Street. The cobblestones are real ballast stones from old ships, which means uneven and brutal in heels. Up top on Bay Street you get the views without the ankle risk. Hotels here cater to cruise passengers and convention crowds. Expect higher rates and more chain options than the Bull Street corridor. The Cotton Sail and Bohemian have rooftop bars worth the visit even if you don't stay there. The catch: you're a steep set of stairs or a long ramp away from the rest of the Historic District, and the area empties out by 10pm on weekdays.

Best for
Cruise arrivalsbusiness travelersview seekers
Walk times
  • Bull Street squares: 8 to 10 min
  • City Market 5 min
  • Forsyth Park 22 min
Skip if: You hate stairs, crowds, or paying a premium for a view
Local tip: Skip the chain restaurants on River Street. Walk up to Bay Street and eat at The Olde Pink House or Husk Savannah instead.

Is the Historic District walkable?

Yes. The whole district is about one square mile, roughly from River Street south to Forsyth Park and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard east to East Broad. You can cross it in 25 minutes on foot. Bull Street is the easiest spine to follow.

Where should first-time visitors stay?

Bull Street between Wright Square and Madison Square. You're central to City Market, River Street, and Forsyth Park, and the squares themselves are the main attraction. Expect $200 to $300 a night midweek for a decent room.

Is River Street worth staying on?

Only if you arrive by cruise ship or want a river view. Rates run $50 to $100 higher than Bull Street equivalents, the cobblestones are rough on luggage wheels, and the area dies after 10pm on weekdays. Visit, don't sleep there.

How much should I budget per night?

Budget rooms start around $140 in shoulder season at the edges of the district. Mid-range Bull Street hotels run $200 to $300. Boutique inns on the squares and waterfront properties hit $350 plus. Savannah is most expensive March through May during St Patrick's and wedding season.
