Historic District

Squares, Spanish moss, and the most walkable address in the city

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Savannah's most walkable neighborhood puts you on Bull Street, steps from live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Chippewa Square, Wright Square, and Reynolds Square are all within a few blocks. Head to The Collins Quarter on Bull Street for coffee before the tour groups arrive, then hit the Jepson Center before noon. Abercorn Street runs the full length of the district and has the densest cluster of boutique hotels. Forsyth Park is a 15-minute stroll south. Parking is a real headache here. Most guests leave their car in a garage for the whole stay and walk everywhere. Worth the premium.

Victorian District

Forsyth Park at your door for 30 percent less than the squares

Mid-range $100-$220/night

Just south of Forsyth Park, the Victorian District trades tourist crowds for tree-lined streets and painted Victorian homes on Hall Street and Huntingdon Street. You are three minutes on foot from Forsyth Park's famous fountain and the morning coffee crowd. Bolton Street has some of the best B&Bs in the city. The walk to the Historic District squares takes about 15 minutes and feels like a real neighborhood rather than a theme park. SCAD students live here, which keeps the restaurant scene sharp. Prices run 30 percent lower than the squares without giving up beauty or location.

Starland District

Where Savannah locals actually eat, drink, and spend their weekends

Mid-range $80-$160/night

Locals call Starland the real Savannah. Bull Street south of Forsyth Park becomes a string of galleries, vintage shops, and independent restaurants around 37th and 40th Streets. Foxy Loxy Cafe on Bull Street has a courtyard garden that regulars treat like a living room. Forsyth Park is an eight-minute walk. Downtown squares take 25 minutes on foot or a five-minute rideshare. Hotels here lean boutique and guesthouse-style. No bus tours, no ghost walk groups cutting through. If your goal is hitting the famous squares all day, stay closer. If you want three days eating with the SCAD crowd, Starland wins.

Best for

  • Forsyth Park 8 min

  • Foxy Loxy Cafe 2 min

Local tip: Graveface Records and Curiosities on Bull Street is worth an hour even if you do not buy anything.

River Street

Cobblestones, converted warehouses, and views straight down the Savannah River

Luxury $180-$400/night

River Street runs along the Savannah River and is the city's most dramatic address. Converted cotton warehouses and cobblestone lanes put you at water level with tugboats sliding past at eye level from your hotel window. Bay Street sits one block up and runs quieter. City Market is a five-minute walk west. The Historic squares start eight minutes uphill on foot. Noise is the main complaint. Weekend nights bring live music and bachelorette parties until 2am. Light sleepers should book a weeknight stay or skip the area entirely. The sunrise views over the river are genuinely hard to beat anywhere in the South.

Walk times
  • City Market 5 min

  • Forsyth Park 20 min
Skip if: You are a light sleeper or visiting on a Friday or Saturday night
Local tip: The Rocks on the Roof bar at The Bohemian Hotel has the best rooftop view of the river. Happy hour runs 4pm to 6pm.

What is the best area to stay in Savannah for first-timers?

The Historic District is the clear answer for a first visit. You are on or near Bull Street, within a 10-minute walk of Chippewa Square, Reynolds Square, and the Telfair Museums. The downside is price: budget $150 to $350 per night. If that is too steep, the Victorian District on Hall Street or Huntingdon Street puts you three minutes from Forsyth Park at 30 percent lower prices with almost no trade-off in walkability.

Is River Street worth the premium price?

For a special occasion on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, yes. The converted cotton warehouse hotels are genuinely beautiful and the Savannah River views at sunrise are worth the $200-plus price tag. On a Friday or Saturday, think carefully. The cobblestone street fills with bachelorette groups and the noise carries until 2am. If you go on a weekend, book a Bay Street-facing room on a higher floor.

How long does it take to walk between Savannah neighborhoods?

From River Street to the Historic District squares takes about 8 minutes uphill on foot. Historic District to Victorian District is 15 minutes down Bull Street. Victorian District to Starland is another 10 minutes south on Bull Street. The full distance from River Street to Starland is around 35 to 40 minutes on foot. Savannah is extremely walkable in cooler months. In July and August, a rideshare between neighborhoods saves a lot of misery in the heat.

Is Savannah safe to walk at night?

The Historic District and River Street are safe at night and have plenty of foot traffic until midnight on weekends. Forsyth Park is fine until around 10pm when other people are around. Stick to lit squares and main streets like Bull Street and Abercorn Street after dark. Avoid the area east of East Broad Street north of Bay Street late at night. The Victorian District and Starland are quiet in the evenings and generally safe, but they go residential fast after 9pm.
