Cruz Bay

The hub. Everything starts here.

Luxury $200-$450/night

Cruz Bay is where the ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas drops you, and for good reason. King Street runs a short loop through town past restaurants, dive shops, and the National Park Visitor Center. Wharfside Village sits right at the dock with open-air bars and local art. Most villa rentals climb the hills above on Gift Hill Road and Battery Hill Road, trading flat ground for views over Pillsbury Sound. Grocery stores, pharmacies, car rental, and every tour operator are within walking distance. If this is your first time in the USVI, base here. You will not regret it.

Best for
First-time visitorsfamiliesanyone without a cartravelers needing late-night ferry access
Walk times
  • Ferry dock to Wharfside Village 2 min
  • Town center to National Park Visitor Center 5 min
  • Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay by car 15 min
Skip if: You want quiet. Cruz Bay gets loud on weekends and ferry arrivals roll in until 11pm. Light sleepers will notice.
Local tip: Parking in Cruz Bay is nearly impossible. Book lodging that includes a dedicated spot or plan on circling for 30 minutes every evening when you return from the beach.

Coral Bay

The real St. John. Fewer tourists, more character.

Mid-range $150-$380/night

Coral Bay sits at the eastern end of the island, a 20-minute drive from Cruz Bay along Centerline Road (Route 10) through the national park. The town is anchored by Skinny Legs bar and grill right on the water. Miss Lucy's on Freeman's Ground Road is the local institution for Sunday brunch. The hills around Coral Bay hold the bulk of St. John villa rentals, many with private pools and direct ocean views over Coral Harbour. Two small grocery stores, a laundromat, and one gas station cover the basics. The crowd here is expats, repeat visitors, and people who specifically chose not to be in Cruz Bay.

Best for
Repeat visitorscouplesremote workersvilla renters who want a pool and zero crowds
Walk times
  • Coral Bay town to Skinny Legs bar 3 min
  • Coral Bay to Salt Pond Bay by car 10 min
  • Coral Bay to Cruz Bay by car 20 min
Skip if: You want walkable dining and easy ferry access. You will need a car for everything out here, including groceries.
Local tip: Rent from St. John Car Rental in Coral Bay rather than the Cruz Bay agencies. Cheaper, friendlier, and they know which trucks handle the steep gravel villa driveways without bottoming out.

North Shore (Trunk Bay Area)

Beaches so good they end up on postcards.

Mid-range $80-$320/night

North Shore Road winds between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay along the most scenic stretch of coastline on the island. Trunk Bay is the most photographed beach in the USVI, with a National Park underwater snorkel trail running along the reef. Cinnamon Bay and Maho Bay sit further east and draw fewer crowds. Maho Bay has shallow, calm water where green sea turtles graze on the grass flats most mornings before 9am. The Cinnamon Bay Campground is the only National Park camping on St. John, sitting right on the beach. A handful of private villas dot the hillsides on either side of North Shore Road.

Best for
Snorkelerscampersbeach loverswildlife watchers who want turtles at Maho before the tour boats arrive
Walk times
  • Cinnamon Bay Campground to the water 1 min
  • Trunk Bay parking lot to the shoreline 4 min
  • North Shore Road midpoint to Cruz Bay by car 12 min
Skip if: You need reliable WiFi, air conditioning, or restaurants within walking distance. The North Shore is beach-first and amenities-last.
Local tip: Trunk Bay charges a $5 National Park entry fee per adult. Arrive before 9am to beat the day-trip boats from St. Thomas that flood the beach by mid-morning.

Caneel Bay

Private, quiet, and as close to luxury as St. John gets.

Luxury $350-$900/night

Caneel Bay occupies a private peninsula northwest of Cruz Bay, a 5-minute drive or 15-minute walk from town along North Shore Road. The historic Caneel Bay Resort was originally built by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956 and is slowly being redeveloped after Hurricane Irma damage. The peninsula holds seven private beaches, mostly accessible to resort guests or via a short permit walk. A handful of boutique properties and high-end villa rentals sit in the surrounding hillsides. Caneel Bay feels removed from the ferry crowd while staying close enough to Cruz Bay for groceries and dinner without committing to a 20-minute drive each way.

Best for
Honeymoonershigh-end villa rentersanyone who wants a private beach with almost no other guests nearby
Walk times
  • Caneel Bay entrance to Cruz Bay ferry dock 15 min
  • Caneel Bay to Trunk Bay by car 10 min
  • Caneel Bay beaches to Cruz Bay restaurants on foot 20 min
Skip if: You are watching a budget. Even modest properties in this area charge a premium purely for the Caneel Bay address.
Local tip: The public beach at Caneel Bay called Honeymoon Beach is reachable by water taxi from Cruz Bay dock for about $10 each way. Locals use this to skip the resort parking situation entirely.

What is the best area to stay in St. John USVI for first-timers?

Cruz Bay. The ferry from Red Hook, St. Thomas drops you right in town so you do not need a car on day one. King Street and Wharfside Village have restaurants and bars within a 5-minute walk. Book a hillside rental on Gift Hill Road for views over Pillsbury Sound. Expect to pay $200 to $450 per night. Do not book Coral Bay for your first visit.

Do you need a car to get around St. John?

Yes, unless you are staying in Cruz Bay and plan to take taxis to the beach. Coral Bay and the North Shore have no real public transit. Taxis run between Cruz Bay and Trunk Bay for around $7 per person, but villa stays in Coral Bay are nearly impossible without your own vehicle. Rent a Jeep or open-air truck from any Cruz Bay agency for $75 to $110 per day.

Is Coral Bay cheaper than Cruz Bay?

Slightly. Coral Bay villa rentals average $150 to $380 per night compared to $200 to $450 in Cruz Bay. The real savings come from cooking at your villa since Coral Bay has only a handful of restaurants. Factor in $75 to $110 per day for the car rental you will need, and the price gap narrows fast.

Where is the best place to see sea turtles in St. John?

Maho Bay on the North Shore. Most mornings before 9am, green sea turtles graze the sea grass flats in the shallows. You can stand waist-deep and watch them from 10 feet. Trunk Bay also has turtles but draws more crowds from the tour boats. Go early, move slowly, and stay out of their path.
