01

Cruz Bay

The ferry hub. Most social, most convenient.

Budget $0-$0/night

Cruz Bay is where the public ferry from Red Hook, St Thomas docks after a 20-minute crossing. King Street and Strand Street put restaurants, bars, and shops within a five-minute walk. North Shore Road starts here and connects you to every beach worth visiting. You pay for the convenience. Vacation rentals on Battery Hill and along Frank Bay Road run $250 to $450 per night. Noise from Woody's Beach Bar carries well past midnight on Fridays. But if you want to skip a rental car for the first day or two, this is the only part of the island where that is realistic.

Best for
First-timerssolo travelersand couples who want nightlife access and easy ferry connections to St Thomas
Walk times
  • Cruz Bay ferry dock 2 min
  • Mongoose Junction shops 5 min
  • Frank Bay beach 12 min
Skip if: You need quiet. Cruz Bay center is loud on weekends and parking near the dock is a daily battle.
Local tip: Book a rental on Battery Hill or on the lower stretch of Gifft Hill Road just above town. You get the views without paying the premium for a front-row spot next to the bars.

Coral Bay

The local end. Slower pace, almost half the price.

Budget $0-$0/night

Coral Bay sits on the eastern end of St John, about a 25-minute drive from Cruz Bay along Centerline Road (Route 10). It feels like a different island. Skinny Legs Bar off Route 107 is the social center, with a handful of local restaurants clustered nearby. Salt Pond Road heads south to Salt Pond Bay beach, one of the best free snorkeling spots on the island. Vacation rentals here start around $130 per night and rarely exceed $300. You will need a car every day. The trade-off is real: no ferry access, limited grocery options, but almost no tourist noise.

Best for
Repeat visitorslong staystravelers who want the real St John without the Trunk Bay crowds
Walk times
  • Skinny Legs Bar 8 min
  • Salt Pond Bay trailhead 22 min
  • Coral Bay small boat dock 5 min
Skip if: You have frequent day trips to St Thomas planned. The drive to Cruz Bay plus the ferry adds significant time each way.
Local tip: Groceries at the Coral Bay Marina Market are expensive and limited. Stock up at Cost-U-Less in Cruz Bay when you arrive or bring supplies from the Pueblo supermarket in St Thomas before boarding the ferry.

Great Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole

Residential quiet, ten minutes from town.

Budget $0-$0/night

Gifft Hill Road connects this southwestern zone to Cruz Bay in about ten minutes by car. The Westin St John Resort sits directly on Great Cruz Bay beach and is the only full-service resort currently operating on the island. Villa rentals along Rendezvous Road and on the hillsides above Fish Bay offer private infinity pools with Caribbean Sea views at prices well below comparable properties in Cruz Bay. Chocolate Hole cove is walkable from many rentals and good for kayaking and calm water swimming. Nothing in this area is walkable for groceries or restaurants, but distances by car are short in every direction.

Best for
Familiesgroups splitting a villacouples who want a pool and privacy without the remoteness of Coral Bay
Walk times
  • Great Cruz Bay beach (Westin) 10 min
  • Chocolate Hole cove 8 min
  • Cruz Bay town (by car) 10 min
Skip if: You are not renting a car. There is nothing walkable outside the immediate neighborhood.
Local tip: The Westin beach is legally public access. Non-guests use the southern sandbar section. Worth a half-day visit if your villa lacks a pool and you want calm, clear water close to town.

North Shore (Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay)

Sleep inside the national park, walk to the water.

Budget $0-$0/night

North Shore Road runs along the top of St John through the Virgin Islands National Park. Cinnamon Bay Campground and Resort, rebuilt and reopened in 2022 after Hurricane Irma, is the main accommodation. Eco-tents start around $100 per night and cottage rooms reach $280. Trunk Bay beach, consistently rated one of the top beaches in the Caribbean, is a five-minute drive west on North Shore Road. Maho Bay and Francis Bay are both under ten minutes east. There are no restaurants within walking distance except at the resort itself. A car is required. This area works best for beach-focused travelers who want to open their door and reach the water immediately.

Best for
Camperssnorkelersbeach-first travelersanyone who wants to be inside the national park perimeter
Walk times
  • Cinnamon Bay beach 3 min
  • Trunk Bay (by car) 7 min
  • Maho Bay beach (by car) 9 min
Skip if: You want nightlife, restaurants within reach, or fast ferry access. This area has none of those things.
Local tip: Eco-tents at Cinnamon Bay sell out for the January to April window three months in advance. Set a calendar reminder in October if you are planning a winter trip.

Do you need a car to stay in St John?

Only in Cruz Bay can you manage a couple of days without one. North Shore Road has no sidewalks and taxis cost $10 to $20 per person per ride, which adds up fast. Jeep rentals run $80 to $130 per day from operators like Cool Breeze Jeep Rental and Spencer's Jeep Rentals, both located in Cruz Bay near the ferry dock. Book at least two weeks in advance in winter. The island is nine miles long but the roads are steep and narrow, so smaller vehicles are harder to navigate on the switchbacks heading up Gifft Hill.

What is the cheapest area to stay in St John?

Coral Bay has the lowest consistent prices, with rentals starting around $130 per night for a one-bedroom. Cinnamon Bay eco-tents on the North Shore begin near $100. Cruz Bay has the widest range but true budget options near the ferry are limited and noisy. Shoulder season in May and June cuts rates island-wide by 20 to 35 percent compared to the January through April peak. Avoid the week between Christmas and New Year if budget matters; rates spike across all four areas.

How far is St John from St Thomas?

The public passenger ferry from Red Hook on the eastern tip of St Thomas to Cruz Bay takes about 20 minutes. It runs roughly every hour from 6am to midnight and costs $8 each way for adults. A private ferry from Charlotte Amalie downtown takes about 45 minutes. There is no airport on St John, so every visitor connects through St Thomas Cyril E. King Airport. Car barges also cross from Red Hook if you rent a vehicle in St Thomas and want to bring it over.

Is Caneel Bay Resort open in 2026?

Caneel Bay Resort on the northwest edge of St John has been closed since Hurricane Irma in September 2017. As of 2026, the property remains shuttered due to a long-running dispute between the National Park Service and the previous operator over the terms of the ground lease. It is not accepting hotel guests. The beach at Caneel Bay is accessible to the public by water taxi from Cruz Bay dock for roughly $10 round trip, but the resort facilities remain closed.
