Victorian mining town meets ski resort, walkable to lifts and every bar on Colorado Avenue

Luxury $200-$600/night

Colorado Avenue anchors Telluride's historic core, a National Historic Landmark district packed into a box canyon at 8,750 feet. Oak Street runs parallel one block up, quieter but equally central. Lift 8 departs from the northern end of Oak Street, a 5-minute walk from most hotels. The New Sheridan Hotel has stood on Colorado Avenue since 1895. You can walk every shop, bar, and restaurant in town without a car. In summer, the free Gondola launches from San Juan Avenue and puts you at Mountain Village in 13 minutes. Box Canyon Falls is a flat 15-minute walk west of the post office.

Mountain Village Boulevard loops around a pedestrian plaza at 9,540 feet, flanked by ski valets, slope-side restaurants, and the upper Gondola terminal. The Madeline Hotel and Lumiere Hotel sit within a short walk of the lifts. The Chondola chair departs about 200 feet from most condo buildings. In winter you ski home via Plunge or Kant-Mak-M runs directly to your door. In summer, wildflower meadows and mountain biking make the gondola ride worthwhile even without snow. Society Turn

Budget base camp at the valley gondola station, 3 miles from the action

Mid-range $120-$350/night

Society Turn occupies the valley floor of the San Miguel River canyon where Highway 145 meets the lower Gondola terminal, roughly 3 miles from downtown Telluride and 2 miles below Mountain Village. The Telluride Express shuttle stops directly outside most vacation rental complexes here. Lodging runs to condo-style properties and private rentals rather than traditional hotels. The Galloping Goose regional bus also serves this corridor on a regular schedule. It is the most affordable lodging zone within the Telluride ski area boundary. You will need a car or a shuttle pass to function comfortably. Grocery runs are easier here than anywhere else in the valley.

Best for

Walk times
  • Lower Gondola terminal 8 min
  • Galloping Goose bus stop on Highway 145 3 min
  • San Miguel River Trail access 5 min

Local tip: Buy a multi-day Telluride Express pass at the base gondola station in person, not online. It saves about $8 per day and the booth opens at 7 am every ski day.

Prices are the lowest you will find within 3 miles of the ski area. Town Park, where the Bluegrass and Film Festivals stage every year, is a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute bike ride along the flat riverwalk trail that skirts the canyon floor. The Galloping Goose bus connects to downtown Colorado Avenue in about 8 minutes.

What is the best area to stay in Telluride for skiing?

Mountain Village is the top pick for skiers. You can ski to your door via Plunge or Kant-Mak-M, and the Chondola chair is 3 minutes from most properties. If ski-in ski-out is not essential, Historic Downtown is the second-best option. Lift 8 on Oak Street is a 5-minute walk from Colorado Avenue, and you avoid Mountain Village nightly rates that routinely start at $300.

Is it worth staying in Mountain Village instead of downtown Telluride?

It depends on why you are visiting. Mountain Village makes sense if skiing is the priority and you want doors-to-slopes convenience. But downtown has the better restaurants, livelier bars, and more historic character. The free Gondola runs until midnight on weekends in ski season, so many skiers stay downtown and gondola up each morning. For summer trips, downtown almost always beats Mountain Village.

How expensive is Telluride compared to other Colorado ski towns?

Telluride sits at the expensive end of the Colorado resort spectrum, roughly on par with Aspen and above Vail or Breckenridge. Downtown hotels run $200 to $600 per night in ski season. Mountain Village properties start around $300 and climb past $800 for premium ski-in condos. Summer runs 30 to 50 percent cheaper across all areas. Lawson Hill vacation rentals are the only real budget option close to the resort.

Do I need a car to stay in Telluride?

Not if you stay in Historic Downtown or Mountain Village. Both are walkable or connected by the free Gondola. Society Turn and Lawson Hill require a car or a shuttle pass. The Telluride Express runs every 20 minutes during ski season but stops around 11 pm. If you plan to ski early and eat late on Colorado Avenue, Historic Downtown is the most car-free experience in the valley.
