Downtown Telluride

Walk everywhere, pay for the privilege

Luxury $250-$600/night

Colorado Avenue is where Telluride actually happens. The Victorian storefronts between Oak Street and Townsend Avenue hold restaurants, bars, gear shops, and the historic Sheridan Hotel at 231 W. Colorado. You are five minutes on foot from Lift 7 at the south end of town and ten minutes from the Oak Street gondola station for free rides up to Mountain Village. Clark's Market on W. Colorado covers groceries. Apres options stack up at the New Sheridan Bar and the Telluride Brewing taproom. The downside is noise on festival weekends and the premium room rates that come with being at the center of everything inside the box canyon.

Best for
First-timersfestival-goersanyone who wants restaurants and bars within five minutes on foot
Walk times
  • Lift 7 base 5 min
  • Oak Street gondola station 10 min
  • Clark's Market 3 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or need quiet nights. Summer festivals fill Colorado Avenue until midnight.
Local tip: Book the east end of Colorado Avenue near Fir Street for slightly lower rates and the same walkability without being directly above the bar strip.

Mountain Village

Ski-in ski-out convenience at 10,540 feet

Luxury $350-$900/night

Mountain Village sits at 10,540 feet and connects to Downtown by the free Telluride Gondola in 13 minutes. Mountain Village Boulevard is the pedestrian spine, lined with ski rentals, restaurants, and direct slope access. The Peaks Resort and Spa is the anchor hotel here with a full spa and true ski-in ski-out access off Lift 4. You pay a premium for the convenience but skip the car entirely during ski season. Summers are quieter and rates drop 30 to 40 percent compared to winter peaks. The gondola stops at 11:30 p.m., so late nights in Downtown require a car or a taxi back up to the village.

Best for
Serious skiers who want true ski-in ski-out access and are willing to pay for zero-compromise slope convenience
Walk times
  • Lift 4 Village Express base 5 min
  • Mountain Village gondola station 3 min
  • Mountain Village core restaurants 8 min
Skip if: You want the authentic Colorado Avenue bar and restaurant scene within walking distance every night.
Local tip: The gondola is free and runs year-round during operating hours. Stay in Mountain Village in late June and you get town access for nothing while saving 40 percent on your room.

Lawson Hill

Local prices between two worlds

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Lawson Hill is the residential mesa neighborhood between Downtown Telluride and Mountain Village at roughly 9,200 feet. There is no hotel strip here, just vacation condos, townhomes, and short-term rentals along Lawson Hill Road and the surrounding streets. You save 30 to 50 percent compared to Downtown for comparable square footage. The Galloping Goose multi-use trail connects Lawson Hill to Downtown across 1.5 miles on foot or bike. The gondola Meadows Station is a 12-minute walk, giving you Mountain Village access without driving. Bring groceries because there are no shops or restaurants in the neighborhood itself.

Best for
Families needing extra spacebudget-conscious travelersand anyone who wants a full kitchen and a hot tub
Walk times
  • Gondola Meadows Station 12 min
  • Downtown via Galloping Goose trail 25 min
  • Highway 145 bus stop 8 min
Skip if: You hate driving or relying on a schedule. No walkable food options means a car is effectively required day and night.
Local tip: Rent a condo with a private hot tub and use the gondola for everything else. Your per-person cost drops sharply versus a Downtown hotel room, especially for groups of four or more.

Sunnyside

Quiet east end with trails at the door

Luxury $200-$450/night

Sunnyside covers the quiet east end of Telluride stretching from Pine Street toward the mouth of the box canyon and Bridal Veil Falls, Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall at 365 feet. Colorado Avenue narrows here and vacation rentals thin out into local homes and small condo complexes. You are a ten-minute walk from the center of Colorado Avenue and right at the trailhead for Bear Creek Canyon. The Jud Wiebe Trail starts on the north slopes just above this neighborhood. This area suits hikers who want altitude and trail access at the door but want restaurants and bars within walking range when the mood strikes.

Best for
Hikerstrail runnersand anyone who wants residential quiet while keeping town access on foot
Walk times
  • Bear Creek trailhead 5 min
  • Center of Colorado Avenue restaurants 10 min
  • Bridal Veil Falls road start 15 min
Skip if: You want buzzing apres-ski energy right outside the door. The walk back from the bar strip at night is uphill.
Local tip: The east end of Telluride catches morning sun first because of the canyon orientation. Walk to Bridal Veil before 8 a.m. and you will have it entirely to yourself.

Is it better to stay in Downtown Telluride or Mountain Village?

Depends on your priority. Downtown puts Colorado Avenue restaurants and Lift 7 within a five-minute walk. Mountain Village gives you ski-in ski-out from Lift 4 and the 13-minute gondola connects both areas for free until 11:30 p.m. For first visits, Downtown wins for atmosphere and variety. For dedicated ski weeks, Mountain Village wins for convenience. The free gondola means you are never truly trapped in either direction, so the decision really comes down to whether you ski hard every day or split your time between town and slopes.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Telluride?

Lawson Hill. Condos here run $150-350 per night compared to $250-600 Downtown. You get more space, often a full kitchen, and sometimes a private hot tub. The Galloping Goose trail connects you to Downtown in about 1.5 miles on foot or bike. The trade-off is you need a car for groceries since the neighborhood has zero shops. For families of four or more, Lawson Hill almost always works out cheaper per person than any Downtown hotel room.

Can you get around Telluride without a car?

Yes, if you stay Downtown or in Mountain Village. The free Telluride Gondola runs between both areas from roughly 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily. Within Downtown everything is walkable along Colorado Avenue. A free town bus also runs loops on a posted schedule at the gondola station. If you stay in Lawson Hill or outlying areas, a car becomes necessary for groceries and late-night trips. Sunnyside is technically car-free since it connects on foot to Colorado Avenue, but it has no shops of its own.

When is the best time to visit Telluride for affordable hotel rates?

Shoulder seasons offer the best value. Late April through mid-May after ski season closes, and late October through mid-November before it opens, see rates drop 40 to 60 percent. Summer festival season in July and August, plus the Telluride Film Festival in September, pushes prices back toward peak winter levels. For skiing, January and February have reliable snow but the highest rates. Mid-December and March often deliver good conditions at noticeably lower prices than the peak holiday window.
