Springdale

Walk to the park entrance. Pay for the privilege.

Budget $0-$0/night

Springdale runs along Zion Park Blvd (SR-9) from the south entrance down to Canyon Junction Bridge, about one mile of hotels, restaurants, and outfitters. The free Zion Canyon Shuttle stops directly in front of most properties. Flanigan's Inn sits at 428 Zion Park Blvd and Cable Mountain Lodge at 147 Zion Park Blvd, both within two minutes of a shuttle stop. You leave your car for the whole stay. Rooms hit $200 to $400 in peak season. Worth it for hikers targeting Angels Landing or The Narrows who want the first 6 AM shuttle without a line.

Best for
Hikers doing Angels Landing or The Narrows who need first-shuttle access and want to leave the car parked for the entire trip
Walk times
  • Zion Canyon Shuttle stop on Zion Park Blvd 2 min
  • South Entrance Visitor Center 8 min
  • Restaurants and gear shops along Zion Park Blvd 5 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or staying more than two nights. The premium is steep and dining choices on one street get old fast.
Local tip: Book direct with the hotel when possible. Some Springdale properties hold shuttle-facing rooms and balcony units for direct bookings. Third-party rates rarely beat direct here.

The drive to the Zion Canyon Visitor Center takes 30 to 35 minutes in normal traffic. A comparable room costs $90 to $160 versus $300 in Springdale. Hurricane has a Walmart on 100 East, a Smith's grocery store, and a dozen sit-down restaurants that are not tourist-priced. Sand Hollow State Park on Sand Hollow Road is 15 minutes away for rest days. Best choice for families staying three or more nights.

St. George, UT

40 miles out. Airport. Every hotel chain represented.

St. George is the largest city in southwestern Utah, 42 miles west of Zion on I-15. Hotels cluster along Bluff Street and St. George Blvd, with every major chain from Marriott to Hilton represented. St. George Regional Airport (SGU) has direct flights from several western US cities, making this the logical arrival point for fly-drive trips. Riverside Drive and Dixie Drive connect you to Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, 10 minutes from most hotels. Town Square on Tabernacle Street has restaurants, shops, and the historic St. George Temple. Drive time to Zion's south entrance is 45 to 50 minutes in normal traffic.

Best for
Flyers arriving at SGUroad trippers combining Zion with Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon North Rimand anyone who needs full hotel selection at competitive rates
Walk times
  • St. George Blvd restaurants and cafes 8 min
  • Town Square on Tabernacle Street 12 min
  • Ancestor Square shops and dining near Main Street 10 min
Skip if: Your entire trip is Zion and nothing else. The 45-minute drive each way adds up over multiple days and you miss the park-town atmosphere.
Local tip: St. George hosts its marathon in October and several Dixie State University events. Book six weeks ahead for those weekends or rates jump to Springdale levels.

Kanab, UT

East side base. Three parks within 90 minutes.

Budget $0-$0/night

Kanab sits 43 miles east of Zion on US-89, positioned between Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon North Rim. Center Street (US-89) is the main drag. Parry Lodge at 89 East Center Street opened in 1931 and hosted Old West film productions for decades. Newer chain properties sit near 300 West. The drive to Zion's east entrance via SR-9 through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel takes about 45 minutes. Kanab is quieter and cheaper than all other options near Zion, with a genuine small-town character. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is 30 minutes north on US-89.

Best for
Multi-park itineraries hitting ZionBryce Canyonand Grand Canyon North Rim. Also ideal for photographers targeting Zion's east side and Wave permit lottery applicants.
Walk times
  • Center Street restaurants and shops 5 min
  • Kanab Visitor Center on 100 East Center Street 7 min
  • Parry Lodge historic property on Center Street 3 min
Skip if: You are doing Zion only and want the main canyon trailheads. Entering via the east adds 20 minutes to reach most popular hikes compared to Springdale.
Local tip: The Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel has size restrictions. Vehicles over 7 feet 10 inches wide or 11 feet 4 inches tall need a paid escort ($15). Check your rental vehicle dimensions before driving SR-9.

Is it worth staying in Springdale instead of driving from Hurricane or St. George?

Depends on trip length. For one or two nights, Springdale's shuttle access is worth the $100 to $200 nightly premium, especially for early starts on Angels Landing. For three or more nights, the $300 savings from Hurricane more than covers gas and 30 extra minutes of driving each way. Serious hikers stay in Springdale. Families and budget travelers base in Hurricane.

Where should I stay to hike The Narrows at Zion?

Springdale for the bottom-up route. The Narrows trailhead sits at the end of the Riverside Walk from Temple of Sinawava, the last shuttle stop. From Springdale you catch the 6:00 AM shuttle and reach the trailhead by 6:30 AM. From Hurricane you are queuing by 8:00 to 8:30 AM as crowds build. For top-down Narrows permits, you start outside the park at Chamberlain Ranch anyway, so Hurricane or Kanab work fine.

What is the cheapest area to stay near Zion National Park?

Kanab averages $75 to $180 per night, the lowest of the four main areas. Hurricane is close behind at $85 to $175. Both have chain hotels and locally-owned motels. St. George has more options but averages slightly higher. Avoid Springdale if budget is your priority. A basic room in Springdale costs more than a mid-range room in any other area.

Can I visit Zion without a car if I stay in Springdale?

Yes. The free Zion Canyon Shuttle runs from town stops on Zion Park Blvd to all major trailheads inside the park. Most Springdale hotels are within a five-minute walk of a town shuttle stop. Private vehicles are not permitted in Zion Canyon during peak season from roughly April through October anyway, so the shuttle is how everyone reaches trailheads. No car needed once you check in to Springdale.
