Springdale

Walk to the park gate. Pay for the privilege.

Mid-range $150-$450/night

Springdale lines Highway 9 directly outside Zion's south entrance, making it the only base where you skip driving into the park entirely. Zion Park Boulevard is the main strip, running from the Zion Canyon Brew Pub near the center down to Cable Mountain Lodge and Bumbleberry Inn within a 5-minute walk of the gate. The free Zion shuttle stops along the boulevard, so early-morning hikes like Angels Landing are genuinely easy. Sol Foods Market handles groceries, but prices run double what you pay in Hurricane. Book 4 to 6 months ahead for spring and fall visits. Do not arrive without a reservation.

Best for
First-time visitorshikers needing early shuttle accessanyone who wants to leave the car parked all day
Walk times
  • Zion south entrance 5 min
  • Main shuttle stop 3 min
  • Canyon Junction Bridge viewpoint 10 min
Skip if: You are visiting July to August on a budget. Peak summer rates hit $400 per night and the canyon temperature tops 105F.
Local tip: Stay Sunday to Thursday. Weekend rates jump 40 percent. The Zion Canyon Brew Pub fills by 6pm sharp. Arrive before then or wait over an hour for a table.

Hurricane

Chain hotels, real grocery prices, 35 minutes from the gate.

Mid-range $80-$180/night

Hurricane sits on Highway 9 about 28 miles west of Springdale and covers every major chain: Hampton Inn on State Street, Holiday Inn Express, La Quinta, and a row of independent motels along Pioneer Road. Smith's supermarket on State Street gives you actual grocery prices, which Springdale does not. Gas stations, fast food, and a hardware store are all here. Driving time to the Zion Canyon Visitor Center runs 35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic through Virgin. Sand Hollow State Park is 10 minutes away for a bonus afternoon swim. Solid fallback when Springdale is sold out or over budget.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies with a caranyone staying 3 or more nights and needing real shopping nearby
Walk times
  • Drive to Zion south entrance 35 min
  • Smith's grocery on State Street 5 min
  • Sand Hollow Reservoir 10 min
Skip if: You plan to do Angels Landing at first light. The shuttle starts at 6am and you need to already be in Springdale to catch it.
Local tip: The Hampton Inn at 975 West State Street is newer than most options on Pioneer Road. The Flying J at the I-15 junction has the cheapest fuel before Highway 9 turns scenic.

St. George

A real city 45 miles out. Best variety, longest drive.

Mid-range $100-$280/night

St. George is a city of 100,000 people at the I-15 junction, 45 miles west of Zion on Highway 9. Bluff Street and St. George Boulevard host Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt properties alongside dozens of independents. You get a Costco on River Road, a Target on Riverside Drive, and urgent care clinics without driving 30 minutes. Ancestor Square on St. George Boulevard is the dinner destination: a half-block of independent restaurants inside a historic building cluster. The drive to Zion takes 50 to 60 minutes and is scenic through Hurricane and Virgin. Works best as a hub if you are also hitting Bryce Canyon or the North Rim.

Best for
Families wanting full city amenitiesmulti-park road tripsvisitors flying into SGU
Walk times
  • Drive to Zion south entrance 50 min
  • Ancestor Square dining on St. George Blvd 10 min
  • St. George Municipal Airport (SGU) 10 min
Skip if: You only have one day at Zion. The extra hour of daily driving eats into your hiking time fast.
Local tip: Avoid hotels on the north section of Bluff Street near the I-15 on-ramp. The road noise at night is relentless. Properties near the Virgin River trail on South River Road are quieter and more walkable.

Kanab

Vintage desert town, 40 miles south, gateway to three parks.

Mid-range $90-$220/night

Kanab sits on US-89 about 40 miles south of Zion, making it the only base within 75 minutes of Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon North Rim simultaneously. Center Street is the full town: the Canyons Boutique Hotel, several classic motor lodges, Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen, and a scattering of outfitters all sit within 3 blocks. The east entrance to Zion via Mount Carmel Junction on Highway 9 is 40 minutes and passes through white cliffs and checkerboard sandstone formations unavailable via the south entrance. The town is quieter and smaller than Springdale, with a more authentic feel and rooms that cost half as much.

Best for
Photographersmulti-park road trippersanyone entering Zion from the east through the Mount Carmel Tunnel
Walk times
  • Drive to Zion east entrance via Mount Carmel Junction 40 min
  • Center Street restaurants and shops 5 min
  • Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park 30 min
Skip if: You want fast shuttle access to Zion Canyon trails. The east entrance adds distance and the shuttle only runs inside the canyon, not from Kanab.
Local tip: Vermilion Cliffs on US-89A are 30 minutes east and stunning at sunrise. Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen on Center Street books out a week ahead in peak season. Reserve before you arrive.

Should I stay in Springdale or somewhere cheaper near Zion?

Stay in Springdale if your budget allows and you are visiting in spring or fall. The free shuttle from your hotel door saves 45 minutes of driving and parking each day, and the early-morning trailhead access is real. If rooms are above $300 or fully booked, Hurricane is the best alternative: 35 minutes away, rooms from $80, and a Smith's grocery on State Street that charges normal prices.

How far is St. George from Zion National Park?

About 45 miles and 50 to 60 minutes on Highway 9 from the south entrance. St. George makes sense if you need city-level amenities, are flying into SGU airport, or are combining Zion with Bryce Canyon and the North Rim on a road trip. Skip it if you only have one day in the park. The extra driving hour cuts into hiking time you will want back.

Is Kanab a good base for visiting Zion?

Yes, especially for road trippers hitting multiple parks. Kanab puts Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon North Rim all within 75 minutes. The Zion east entrance via Mount Carmel Junction is 40 minutes and far less crowded than the main south entrance. Rooms on Center Street run $90 to $220. The town has a genuine desert character that Springdale, which is almost entirely tourist infrastructure, does not.

When should I book hotels near Zion?

Book 4 to 6 months ahead for spring (March to May) and fall (September to October). These are the most popular seasons and Springdale sells out completely. Summer rooms stay available longer because the heat keeps some visitors away, but expect temperatures above 100F in the canyon. November through February gives you the best rates, 30 to 50 percent lower, and far fewer people on the trails.
