01

Altstadt (Old Town)

Historic center, everything walkable, worth the price

Luxury $220-$480/night

Altstadt is Zurich's medieval core and the obvious base for first-timers. Niederdorfstrasse runs through the heart of it, lined with cafes, bakeries, and tram stops. The Grossmunster church is a 5-minute walk from most hotels here. Bahnhofstrasse, Europe's most expensive shopping street, starts just across the Limmat River. You can reach Zurich HB (the main train station) on foot in under 10 minutes. Most sights are under 20 minutes on foot. The downside: hotel prices reflect the location, and the cobblestone lanes fill with tour groups by 10am. Book early for any room under $280.

Best for
First-time visitors who want to walk everywhere and don't mind paying for that convenience
Walk times
  • Zurich HB (main train station) 8 min
  • Lake Zurich waterfront 12 min
  • Grossmunster cathedral 4 min
Skip if: You're on a tight budget or need quiet mornings
Local tip: Book a hotel on the Schipfe side of the Limmat River for quieter streets and the same walking distance to everything.

Seefeld

Upscale, leafy, and right on the lake

Luxury $180-$380/night

Seefeld sits in Kreis 8, east of the Old Town along the lake shore. Seefeldstrasse and Utoquai are the main arteries, with high-end restaurants, wine bars, and independent boutiques throughout. The Zurichsee promenade is steps away. Badi Utoquai, the famous lake swimming area open in summer, is 3 minutes from most hotels here. Tram lines 2 and 4 connect Seefeld to the city center in about 10 minutes. It's quieter than Altstadt at night but still feels genuinely central. The Kunsthaus Zurich museum is a 10-minute walk. Slightly younger crowd than the price point suggests.

Best for
Visitors who want lake accessquiet streetsand a residential feel without being far from the center
Walk times
  • Lake Zurich swimming at Badi Utoquai 3 min
  • Altstadt (Niederdorf) 15 min
  • Kunsthaus Zurich museum 10 min
Skip if: You plan to be out late every night or need to be at the train station before 7am
Local tip: Skip your hotel breakfast. Grab something at one of the bakeries on Seefeldstrasse. Cheaper and far better.

Zurich West (Langstrasse, Kreis 4)

Gritty, creative, and the most affordable central option

Mid-range $90-$200/night

Zurich West covers Kreis 4 and 5, anchored by Langstrasse. It has been gentrified enough to be comfortable but still has real character. Viadukt, a long arcade of shops and food stalls built under old railway arches along Viaduktstrasse, is one of the best spots in Zurich for lunch. Helvetiaplatz is the neighborhood's main square, full of outdoor terraces on warmer days. Hotels here run 40 to 50 percent cheaper than Altstadt for similar room quality. The tram to the city center takes 8 minutes from Helvetiaplatz. The area stays lively until late, which is either a plus or a minus depending on your priorities.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelerssolo visitorsand anyone who wants neighborhood life over tourist-zone hotels
Walk times
  • Viadukt market on Viaduktstrasse 6 min
  • Altstadt by tram (lines 2 or 3) 8 min
  • Zurich HB on foot 18 min
Skip if: You go to bed before midnight and need absolute quiet, or you are traveling with young children
Local tip: Langstrasse itself gets noisy at night. Pick a hotel one block back on Rolandstrasse or Molkenstrasse for the same vibe at half the noise.

Oerlikon

Business district rates, fast train to everything

Mid-range $80-$160/night

Oerlikon is in Kreis 11, north of the center, built around the Oerlikon S-Bahn station and the large MFO Park building on Andreasstrasse. It is not a pretty neighborhood and it doesn't try to be. But hotels here are 30 to 50 CHF per night cheaper than comparable central options. The S-Bahn and tram connect Oerlikon to Zurich HB in 10 minutes. Hallenstadion, the city's main concert and events venue, is here. If you arrive from Zurich Airport, Oerlikon is a single train stop and saves backtracking into the center. Most first-time visitors spend zero time in the neighborhood itself and that is fine.

Best for
Airport transitsconference attendeesand budget travelers willing to trade location for savings
Walk times
  • Zurich HB by S-Bahn 10 min
  • Zurich Airport by train 8 min
  • Hallenstadion events venue 5 min
Skip if: This is your first visit to Zurich and you want to absorb the city's character
Local tip: The MFO Park building on Andreasstrasse is a 6-story vertical garden and worth a look even if you're just passing through. Free to enter.

What is the best area to stay in Zurich for first-time visitors?

Altstadt is the easiest base for first-timers. You can walk to the Grossmunster, Bahnhofstrasse, and Zurich HB in under 10 minutes. It costs $220 to $480 per night, which is steep, but you save on tram fares and wasted time. If budget matters, Zurich West gets you to the center in 8 minutes by tram and costs roughly half as much.

Is Zurich West and Langstrasse safe for tourists?

Yes, by European standards it is safe. Langstrasse has a red-light district history and some late-night bar noise, but street crime targeting tourists is rare. The main issue is noise. Book a hotel one street back from Langstrasse itself, on Rolandstrasse or Molkenstrasse, and you will be comfortable. Daytime is busy and relaxed.

How far is Seefeld from Zurich's main attractions?

Seefeld is 15 minutes on foot from Niederdorf in the Old Town, or 12 minutes by tram lines 2 or 4 to Zurich HB. The Kunsthaus Zurich museum is a 10-minute walk from most Seefeld hotels. Lake swimming at Badi Utoquai is 3 minutes from Seefeldstrasse. It is closer to everything than it looks on a map.

Should I stay near Zurich airport or in the city center?

Stay in the city center. Zurich Airport connects to Zurich HB by train in 10 minutes and costs CHF 6.80 each way. Airport hotels cost roughly the same as central options but leave you stranded at night when trains run less frequently. The one exception: if your flight departs before 6:30am, staying in Oerlikon (one stop from the airport) makes practical sense.
