Niederdorf (Old Town)

The postcard Zurich, with the price tag to match

Luxury $220-$480/night

Niederdorf sits on the east bank of the Limmat, packed into a few narrow lanes between Central and Bellevue. You walk Niederdorfstrasse for shops, Spiegelgasse for quiet medieval alleys, and Limmatquai for river views. The Grossmunster towers are two minutes from most hotels here. It is touristy. Restaurants on Niederdorfstrasse charge 8 to 12 CHF more for the same dish you find in Kreis 4. But you trade money for steps. The main station is a 10-minute walk, the lake is 8, and you can roll out of bed into the old town. Pick a hotel on a side street like Hirschenplatz to dodge the late-night noise.

Best for
First-timers who want everything walkable
Walk times
  • Hauptbahnhof 10 min
  • Lake Zurich (Burkliplatz) 8 min
  • Grossmunster 2 min
Skip if: You hate tourist crowds or want to sleep before midnight on weekends
Local tip: Avoid hotels directly on Niederdorfstrasse on Friday and Saturday. The bar overflow runs until 2am. One block back, on Spiegelgasse or Kirchgasse, is silent.

Kreis 4 (Langstrasse)

Where Zurich locals actually eat and drink

Mid-range $160-$320/night

Kreis 4 wraps around Langstrasse, a 1.5 km stretch from the train tracks down to Helvetiaplatz. This was the red-light district 15 years ago. Now it is the food and bar core: natural wine at Plinio on Brauerstrasse, Thai at Kraftwerk, ramen at Gamper. The vibe shifts block by block. North of Langstrasse near Lochergut feels rough at 1am. South toward Helvetiaplatz is calmer, with tree-lined streets like Anwandstrasse. Hotels run 30 percent cheaper than Niederdorf for similar quality. The trade-off is street noise, the occasional drunk shouting, and a 12-minute tram to the lake.

Best for
Travelers under 40food obsessivessecond-time visitors
Walk times
  • Hauptbahnhof 8 min
  • Helvetiaplatz 5 min
  • Lake Zurich 20 min
Skip if: You travel with kids or need quiet mornings
Local tip: Book hotels south of Langstrasse, near Helvetiaplatz or Anwandstrasse. Same area, half the noise, same restaurants in 5 minutes.

Seefeld

Lakeside living, with money

Luxury $240-$520/night

Seefeld runs along the east shore of Lake Zurich, from Bellevue south to Tiefenbrunnen. Seefeldstrasse is the spine, lined with cafes, design shops, and bakeries like John Baker. You are 2 minutes from the lake at any point, with public swimming spots at Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen and free shoreline at Zurichhorn. Tram 4 runs straight to the main station in 12 minutes. It is residential. Streets like Dufourstrasse and Kreuzstrasse are quiet by 10pm, which is exactly the point. Restaurants are good but pricier than Kreis 4. A glass of wine runs 11 to 14 CHF.

Best for
Coupleslake swimmerstravelers who want to walk after dinner
Walk times
  • Lake Zurich shore 2 min
  • Hauptbahnhof 18 min
  • Opera House 10 min
Skip if: You want to be in the action or hate trams
Local tip: Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen costs 8 CHF for a full day of lake swimming with changing rooms and a small restaurant. Locals go after work, around 6pm.

Enge

The quiet alternative on the west bank

Luxury $200-$420/night

Enge sits across the lake from Seefeld, on the west shore. Most travelers skip it, which is why it works. The neighborhood centers on Bahnhof Enge, a regional train stop 4 minutes from the main station. Mythenquai runs along the lake with the city's biggest free lawn for sunbathing and the Strandbad Mythenquai swimming area. Streets like Brandschenkestrasse and Tessinerplatz are mostly office buildings during the day and dead at night, in a good way. Restaurants are limited but the Bahnhofstrasse luxury shopping strip ends here. You get lake access, fast transit, and 20 percent cheaper hotels than Seefeld.

Best for
Business travelerslight sleepersrepeat visitors
Walk times
  • Lake Zurich shore 5 min
  • Hauptbahnhof 5 min
  • Bahnhofstrasse 10 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner or nightlife
Local tip: Take the boat from Burkliplatz to Wadenswil for a 90-minute lake ride. It costs less than a tourist cruise because it is a regular ZVV transit boat. Use a day pass.

Is Niederdorf or Seefeld better for first-time visitors?

Niederdorf if you have 2 nights or less. Everything is walkable and you waste no time on transit. Seefeld if you have 4+ nights and care about morning runs by the lake more than late-night browsing in the old town.

Is Kreis 4 safe at night?

South of Langstrasse, yes. The stretch around Helvetiaplatz and Anwandstrasse is fine at any hour. The blocks north near Lochergut and the train tracks get dodgy after midnight, with drug activity. Stay south and you will not notice anything.

How much should I budget per night for a decent Zurich hotel?

Plan on 280 to 380 USD for a solid 4-star in any of these areas in summer. Niederdorf and Seefeld run high. Kreis 4 and Enge save you 50 to 100 USD per night for similar quality. Hotels under 180 USD are usually cramped or far out.

Do I need a car in Zurich?

No. Skip it. The ZVV transit pass costs 9 CHF per day and covers trams, buses, trains, and the lake boats. Most hotels in these four areas charge 35 to 50 CHF per night for parking. Driving in the old town is restricted anyway.
