Mangalem Quarter: the obvious choice (for good reason)
Mangalem is Berat's most photographed neighborhood, and it earns it. The Ottoman-era houses stacked up the hillside, each with those iconic rows of windows, are genuinely stunning in morning light. You're 10-15 minutes walk from the castle gate and 5 minutes from the King Mosque on Rruga Mihal Komneno.
Hotels here range from $45 to $220/night. The narrow lanes above the main Mangalem road can be hard to navigate with heavy luggage. WhatsApp your hotel ahead of time and ask for a meeting point. Also: the higher up the hill you stay, the better the view but the steeper the climb home after dinner.
Kala Castle Quarter: staying inside the walls
This is the one experience in Berat that genuinely has no equal. The Kala Quarter sits inside the medieval fortifications at the top of the hill, with churches, ruins, and a handful of inhabited homes still standing around you. Hotel Castle Park Berat and Berat Castle Retreat both operate here, starting at $260-420/night.
The drive up is steep and the roads inside the walls are narrow. Most castle hotels offer a pick-up service from the lower city. use it. Sunset from up here, looking out over the Osum River valley toward Mount Tomorr, is the kind of thing you'll remember for years.
Gorica Quarter: the quieter side of the river
Cross the Gorica Bridge and the vibe shifts immediately. Gorica is residential, calm, and sees maybe a tenth of the foot traffic of Mangalem. Vila Arberi sits here at $150-200/night with a 9.0 rating. some of the best value in the entire city.
You're about 10 minutes walk from the Ethnographic Museum back in Mangalem. The tradeoff is convenience: restaurants and cafés are fewer, and you'll cross the bridge several times a day. But if you want peace, Gorica delivers.
When to book: seasons matter more than you think
July and August are brutal in terms of both heat (32-36°C) and crowds. The Mangalem lanes fill up with tour groups by 10am, and castle-view rooms at good hotels sell out weeks in advance. Prices at premium properties hit $350-420/night. Book at least 6 weeks out if you're coming in peak summer.
April-June is genuinely the sweet spot. Temperatures are 18-24°C, the hillside wildflowers are out, and you can walk into most mid-range hotels without a reservation. Prices drop 20-35% compared to August. September is a close second: the crowds thin fast after the first week of the month.
Getting in and around Berat
Tirana International Airport is your entry point, about 120 km north. A private transfer runs $40-60 and takes 1.5-2 hours. Furgons leave from Kombinat terminal in Tirana for 400-500 ALL. Once you're in Berat, you basically walk everywhere. the old city is compact and pedestrian-friendly.
Taxis inside Berat cost 300-500 ALL for most trips. Agree on a price before you get in. The bus station sits on Rruga Antipatrea in the lower city, and furgons to Gjirokastër, Vlorë, and Fier depart from there most mornings before noon.
Eating and drinking near your hotel
The restaurant strip along Rruga Antipatrea in the City Center is fine but touristy. Better options are tucked into the Mangalem lanes. look for places without laminated picture menus. Ferge e Beratit (Berat-style baked offal) and tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt) are the local dishes worth ordering.
The Gorica riverbank has a handful of café-bars that do excellent coffee and local wine from the Berat region. Wines from the Çobo Winery, about 6 km outside the city, show up on menus across town and are consistently good at $4-8 a glass. Skip the imported wine lists entirely.

Mangalem is where Berat makes sense. The tiered Ottoman houses climbing the hillside, each with those stacked windows, are the image that defines this city. You're close to everything: the King Mosque, the Lead Mosque, and the footpath up to the castle gate.
Hotels here span a wide range. Hotel Mangalemi starts at $45/night for budget travelers who want to be in the thick of it. Hotel Onufri runs $105-155/night with some of the best terrace views in the lower city. At the top end, Hotel Rezidenca Desaret charges $170-220/night and delivers a boutique experience with polished stone floors and proper Ottoman-era architecture.
The lanes above Rruga Mihal Komneno are steep and uneven. If you have mobility concerns or heavy bags, factor that in when choosing your specific property. But for most travelers, this is the right neighborhood to be in.

The Kala Quarter is not for everyone. The access road is steep, some lanes are too narrow for cars, and you're a 20-minute drive or a tough 25-minute uphill walk from the City Center. But the payoff is extraordinary: you're sleeping inside a functioning medieval fortress.
Hotel Castle Park Berat ($260-350/night) and Berat Castle Retreat ($290-420/night) are both here. Both earn their ratings. 9.1 and 9.3 respectively. The Onufri National Museum is 5 minutes walk, and the panoramic views across the Osum River valley toward Mount Tomorr are unmatched anywhere in southern Albania.
Book direct with your hotel and ask about their pick-up service from the lower city. It's worth it. And bring good walking shoes. the cobblestones inside the castle walls are uneven and slippery after rain.

Gorica sits on the east bank of the Osum River, directly across from Mangalem. Cross the Gorica Bridge (about 8 minutes walk from the City Center) and the atmosphere changes completely. It's calm, green, and far less visited than the Old Town side.
Vila Arberi is the standout here. rated 9.0 and priced at $150-200/night, it's one of the best value propositions on the entire list. Guesthouse Tomorri offers a more budget-friendly entry at $55-85/night in the same neighborhood. Both properties have views back toward the Mangalem hillside.
The main limitation is dining. You'll cross the bridge regularly for good restaurant options. But that walk is pleasant, and the quieter atmosphere on the Gorica side makes for much better sleep than anywhere near the Old Town's café strip.

The City Center sits below the old quarters, straddling the lower stretch of Rruga Antipatrea and the riverfront. It's more convenient for arrivals: the bus station is here, taxis are easy to flag, and the streets are flat. But you lose the atmosphere that makes Berat special.
Hotel Kolonja ($110-160/night) and Hotel Berat ($120-175/night) are both solid mid-range options here. clean, professional, and rated 8.2-8.3. Hotel Osumi ($135-190/night) sits right on the Riverside with an 8.7 rating and a romantic angle that's well-deserved: the views back toward Mangalem from the river terrace are genuinely lovely at dusk.
If you're in Berat for work or just passing through on a longer Albania circuit, the City Center makes sense. For a proper Berat experience focused on the UNESCO heritage, push yourself up the hill to Mangalem or across to Gorica.
