Ti Kaye sits on a clifftop above Anse Cochon beach on the southwest coast, accessed by a steep staircase down to the water. The cottages are spread through tropical gardens and are built in traditional St. Lucian style with wooden louvers and outdoor showers. The beach below has some of the best snorkeling on the island. Dining at Kai Manje restaurant is a highlight, with strong rum cocktails and fresh seafood. It is secluded enough that having a rental car is genuinely useful.

Soufriere is the original settlement of St. Lucia and sits in the shadow of the two Piton peaks, both UNESCO World Heritage listed. The town itself is small, with a central market, a few restaurants on the waterfront, and the ferry dock. The main draw is the natural landscape: the drive-in volcano at Sulphur Springs 2 kilometers south (10 entry, 1.5 hours), the chocolate estate tours, and the snorkeling at Anse Chastanet.
Anse Chastanet beach has the best coral reef snorkeling on the island, with reef starting about 10 meters from shore. Snorkel rental costs $10 per day. Jade Mountain at $800 to $1,800 and Sugar Beach at $495 to $900 are the prestige addresses. Fond Doux Eco Resort at $150 to $240 on a working cocoa estate is the best mid-range alternative with genuine character.
Rodney Bay: the island's most social and convenient zone
Rodney Bay in the north is St. Lucia's most developed tourist area, built around a marina, a long beach, and a strip of restaurants and bars called the Rodney Bay Village. Reduit Beach stretches 1.5 kilometers along the bay and is the longest accessible beach on the island. Pigeon Island National Park, connected by a causeway just north of Rodney Bay, has two hilltop forts and sweeping views for $15 entry.
Coco Palm at $120 to $200 is the best mid-range hotel in the area, genuinely well-located and run. The Landings at $175 to $290 is the top family option on the sheltered Labrelotte Bay north of the marina. For nightlife, the Spinnakers and Key Largo beach bars on Reduit Beach run until midnight on weekends. The Rodney Bay Marina has a functioning supermarket, good for self-catering stays.
Marigot Bay: the most photogenic anchorage in the Caribbean
Marigot Bay is a narrow natural harbor south of Castries, sheltered by steep wooded hills on three sides and containing a small beach, a marina, and a few restaurants. It is one of the most photographed spots in the Caribbean and appeared in the original Doctor Doolittle film in 1967. Access is by a short free ferry across the bay mouth.
Calabash Cove Resort and Spa at $190 to $280 per night sits on a hillside above the bay between Marigot and Castries. Adults-only policy, private plunge pools, and a strong restaurant make it the best mid-upper option in the area. Marigot Bay itself has two marina restaurants at the waterfront. The bay is calm enough for paddleboarding and is a popular anchorage for sailing yachts.
Hiking the Pitons: what you actually need to know
Gros Piton (771 meters) has a formal trail with a required local guide at $45 per person. The hike takes 3 to 4 hours round trip and is strenuous in the heat and humidity. Start at 7 AM at the Gros Piton Trail Center in Fond Gens Libres village. The view from the summit across the Caribbean on a clear day is outstanding. Petit Piton is more technical and requires a licensed guide specifically certified for Petit Piton.
Both peaks are best approached from Soufriere-based hotels. Sugar Beach and Jade Mountain are closest. All Soufriere hotels can arrange guide connections. Bring 2 liters of water per person minimum, sunscreen, and rubber-soled shoes. The descent from Gros Piton is steeper than the ascent and trekking poles help.
Eating and drinking in St. Lucia
Creole cuisine is the main event. Flying fish with callaloo, green fig and saltfish (the national dish), and bouyon stew are found at local restaurants throughout the island for $15 to $25 per plate. The Friday Night Jump Up street party in Gros Islet village, just north of Rodney Bay, is a weekly event from 9 PM with food stalls and live music. Tickets are free and local rum punch costs $3.
Jade Mountain's Jade Mountain Club restaurant is the best hotel dining experience on the island. Ti Kaye's Kai Manje restaurant is consistently strong and worth a dinner reservation even for non-guests. On Rodney Bay strip, The Naked Fisherman at the Starz complex serves the freshest seafood and gets direct catches most mornings. Reserve in advance for all dinner seatings at Jade Mountain and Ti Kaye.
Practical logistics: getting around St. Lucia
George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) in Castries handles smaller aircraft and is a short drive from Rodney Bay (20 minutes). Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort handles long-haul flights and is 1.5 hours from Soufriere or 1.5 hours from Rodney Bay. Confirm which airport your flight uses as the difference significantly affects transfer times.
Car rental at Hewanorra costs $60 to $80 per day. North-south driving on the west coast road is scenic but slow with switchbacks and one-way sections near Soufriere. Water taxis between Castries and Soufriere cost $50 to $80 per person and take 45 minutes, far more comfortable than the road journey. Most hotels can arrange transfers in either direction.
