Antananarivo: where to stay and what to skip
The Haute-Ville around the Rova palace is the most atmospheric part of the city, and it's where Sakamanga Hotel sits on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo. You're 12 minutes walk from the Marché Artisanal and a short taxi ride from the Air Madagascar office on Avenue de l'Indépendance.
Skip anything on the lower town near Analakely. it's not dangerous during the day, but the streets flood in the wet season and the guesthouses there overcharge for what they deliver. Isoraka, on the upper ridge, is where Hotel Colbert operates and it's genuinely the safest and most functional neighborhood for business or longer stays. Taxis between Isoraka and the Haute-Ville run $2-4 and take 8 minutes.
West coast: baobabs, river trips, and real remoteness
Morondava is the base for the Avenue of the Baobabs, which is 7km north of town on the road toward Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. most people visit at sunrise or sunset. Hotel Baobab sits in the town center, 15 minutes walk from the main pirogue landing on the Morondava River.
Miandrivazo, further north on RN34, is where you pick up the Tsiribihina River drift if you're heading to Tsingy de Bemaraha. Hotel Tsiribihina is the only reliable option in town and river operators park their pirogues 5 minutes from the front door. The road between Morondava and Miandrivazo is rough. 4-5 hours in a 4x4 in dry season, longer after rain.
Islands: Nosy Be vs Sainte-Marie, honestly assessed
Nosy Be gets the most marketing attention and Sainte-Marie gets the better reviews from travelers who've done both. Constance Tsarabanjina sits on its own private island 25km from Hell-Ville by boat. transfers take 45 minutes and are included in the rate. If you want nightlife, cafés on the Rue du Commerce in Hell-Ville, and easy ATM access, Nosy Be wins.
Sainte-Marie is stripped back. One road, forest on both sides, and humpback whales passing from July through September within 2km of the coast. Princesse Bora Lodge is 10 minutes by car from Ambodifotatra town. close enough to grab supplies, far enough to feel like you've disappeared.
Isalo and the southwest: don't rush this region
Isalo National Park sits around Ranohira, 700km south of Antananarivo on RN7. The drive takes 10-12 hours from Tana, so most travelers split it with a night in Fianarantsoa or Ihosy. Le Relais de la Reine is 3km outside Ranohira on the park boundary. you can walk to the canyon trailheads in 20 minutes.
The RN7 is actually one of Madagascar's best roads, which sets a low bar but means it's genuinely driveable. Rent a 4x4 in Antananarivo for $60-90/day with driver, or take the train from Fianarantsoa south. the FCE railway is slow (6-8 hours to Manakara) but passes through scenery that justifies the entire trip.
Andasibe: lemurs at the door, jungle in your ears
Andasibe village is 2km from the park entrance on RN2, and the road from Antananarivo takes 3 hours on a good day. Morondava is the main town on the west coast and the jump-off for the Avenue of the Baobabs. The avenue itself is 7km north on the Belo road, and every driver in town knows it. Miandrivazo sits inland on the Tsiribihina River and most travelers only stop here to start the 3-day river drift to Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Hotel Tsiribihina is basic but clean, and the river operators who run the pirogue trips are based 5 minutes away on the river bank. Rates here are $55-85/night and that includes more hospitality than you'd expect.
The wet season from December through March turns the RN35 between Morondava and Miandrivazo into a serious challenge. A 4x4 is non-negotiable outside May-October. Tsingy de Bemaraha, the UNESCO limestone forest 200km north of Morondava, requires a separate 4x4 transfer or boat from Belo. build in 2 extra days.

The RN7 south from Antananarivo to Ranohira is legitimately one of Africa's great drives. It passes Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, and Ihosy before reaching the sandstone canyons of Isalo National Park. about 700km total. Le Relais de la Reine at Ranohira is 3km from the park entrance gate, set against the cliffs with a pool that faces the massif directly.
Ranohira itself is a small town with a few basic restaurants and a park office where guided walks cost $15-25 per person depending on the route. The Natural Pool circuit inside the park is 4-5 hours return and the guide is worth every ariary. Book through the lodge rather than a tout at the park gate.
The region gets cold at night from June through August. temperatures drop to 10-14°C after sunset and the lodge doesn't always warn guests about this. Bring layers. The nearest town with a pharmacy is Ihosy, 80km north on RN7.

Andasibe sits on RN2, 3 hours east of Antananarivo, and it's the easiest place in Madagascar to see and hear lemurs in the wild.
