Royal Andilana Resort & Spa
Royal Andilana Resort & Spa sits in Andilana, Madagascar, and carries a five-star designation that shapes everything you'll find here. The atmosphere feels unhurried and luxurious, the kind of place where you genuinely slow down. The outdoor pool is clearly a centerpiece, and with breakfast on offer you can swim before the day properly starts. The breakfast buffet means mornings are easy and generous. When you need to unwind further, the spa is right there. A hair salon adds a layer of polish you don't always find at resort properties. The restaurant means you're not scrambling for meals off-site. A local shuttle takes care of getting around, and parking is available if you're arriving by car. Full-service laundry keeps longer stays practical. Accessibility provisions are in place, which matters more than people admit. One honest note: the Andilana location puts you in a genuinely remote corner of Madagascar, so lean into the seclusion rather than fight it.

Sambatra Beach Lodge
Sambatra Beach Lodge sits on Île aux Nattes, a small island off Sainte Marie on Madagascar's east coast, and the setting alone earns it serious attention. This is a beachfront property in the most literal sense. You're not walking to the beach. You're on it. The vibe is unhurried and genuinely remote, the kind of place that makes you forget what day it is. There's a restaurant and bar on-site, so you're not scrambling for meals. A pool means you have options beyond the ocean, though with snorkeling available you'll probably spend most of your time in the water. Wi-Fi is available if you need it, but we'd encourage you to ignore it. The airport shuttle takes the stress out of arrival logistics, which matters when you're this far off the beaten path. Kids are welcome here too. Our honest caveat: with no official sub-descriptions to draw from, book direct and confirm room specifics before you arrive.

Eco Lodge Les Chambres Du Voyageur
Eco Lodge Les Chambres Du Voyageur is a tranquil ecolodge on the outskirts of Antsirabe, and it earns its calm reputation. The bungalow-style rooms feel airy and unhurried, warmly furnished in a way that makes you slow down almost immediately. Three decorative gardens give the grounds a layered, considered quality. You can swim before breakfast, which is a small luxury that sets the tone for the day. The on-site restaurant means you don't have to go far for a decent meal. Parking is on-site, practical if you're road-tripping through Madagascar's highlands. Wi-Fi holds up, laundry is handled for you, and pets are welcome. Kids are fine here too. The lodge carries a genuine eco character rather than just the label. We'd say the main caveat is its location behind the train station, which feels more local and low-key than polished. If you want effortless comfort without the noise of a big hotel, this one delivers.

FLY INN Madagascar Hôtel
FLY INN Madagascar Hôtel is a no-nonsense, three-star property in Antananarivo that feels straightforward and functional without apology. The vibe is calm and practical, the kind of place where things work. Wi-Fi is one of the most appreciated features here, so you can stay connected without frustration. Parking is on-site, which matters in a busy capital city. Breakfast is available, and the restaurant offers both buffet dinner and table service, so you've got real dining options without leaving the property. A bar rounds things out when you want to unwind. Rooms have air conditioning, a popular feature that guests consistently flag as a plus. Meeting rooms are available, which adds a layer of flexibility for anyone with work to handle. The airport shuttle takes some stress out of arrival and departure. Concierge, full-service laundry, and room service cover the basics cleanly. If you need a reliable, well-rated base in Antananarivo without fuss, this delivers.

Palissandre Cote Ouest resort & SPA
Palissandre Cote Ouest sits right on the edge of the Mozambique Channel, and that location does most of the talking. It's a beachfront resort in Morondava, Madagascar, with a rustic, unhurried character that feels genuinely relaxed rather than performatively so. The cottages have thatched roofs, wooden floors, and four-poster beds, which gives the whole place a warm, unpretentious charm. Some rooms come with sea views, and all have terraces, minifridges, and satellite TV. Breakfast and dinner are included, so you can eat well without thinking too much about it. The outdoor pool, aquatic gym, spa, and direct beach access mean you're rarely short of something to do. Tennis is available if you want to stay active, and there's even a souvenir shop on site. The Avenue of the Baobabs is 22 km away, making it a solid base for that trip. The airport is 7 km out, and a shuttle is available. Bring the kids and the dog. Both are welcome.

Emeraude Lodge
Emeraude Lodge sits on the Andilana end of Nosy Be, and the setting alone does a lot of the work. It's a three-star property, but guests rate it exceptionally well, which tells you something real. The mood here is calm and unhurried, the kind of place where a day can dissolve without you noticing. You get an outdoor pool and a hot tub, so there's no shortage of ways to do nothing well. Breakfast is on-site and consistently popular with guests, as is the Wi-Fi, which is always a relief in a remote island location. The restaurant keeps you fed without needing to venture out, and a nightclub means evenings can go a different direction if you want them to. Families are genuinely welcome: kids are allowed, pets too, and parking is available. Airport and local shuttles take the logistical stress out of arrival and day trips. The one honest caveat: Nosy Be is remote, so come with relaxed expectations about pace. That's not a flaw. That's the point.

Aurora Lodge
Aurora Lodge sits on Ile aux Nattes, a small island off Madagascar's coast, and it carries the calm, unhurried feel you'd hope for from a three-star property in this part of the world. The vibe here is low-key and genuine, not polished in a corporate way. You'll eat on-site at the restaurant, so you're not scrambling for meals after a long day of travel. Getting here is handled too. The airport shuttle means the logistics of arriving on a remote Malagasy island feel a lot less daunting. Wi-Fi is available, which matters when you want to share where you are without losing the mood of being somewhere remote. If you're traveling with a pet, this is one of the rare spots that won't turn you away at the door. The handful of Google reviews that exist paint a picture of a place that quietly delivers. Just go in knowing it's a three-star lodge, not a resort. Expect charm over luxury, and you'll leave happy.

Souimanga Hôtel- Restaurant
Souimanga Hôtel-Restaurant is a no-frills, one-star property in Antsirabe that punches above its category in guest satisfaction. It's a straightforward place, and that's exactly its appeal. You get reliable Wi-Fi, an on-site restaurant, and an airport shuttle, which covers the basics well without overcomplicating things. The restaurant means you don't have to venture out for every meal, a genuine convenience in a city you're still figuring out. The airport shuttle removes one of the more stressful parts of arrival and departure. Kids are welcome here, so traveling with little ones isn't an issue. The vibe feels calm and unpretentious, the kind of place where you settle in without ceremony. Antsirabe itself rewards walkers, so the hotel's location gives you access to a city worth exploring on foot. If you need luxury trimmings, look elsewhere. But if you want a clean, functional base with a surprisingly warm reputation among guests who've stayed here, Souimanga delivers.

Ikopa Hôtel Madagascar - Resort and Spa
Ikopa Hôtel Madagascar sits on the lakefront in Antananarivo, carrying a laid-back, unhurried character that sets it apart from busier city properties. The airy rooms keep things calm, and the garden adds a genuinely relaxed outdoor feel. You can swim in the outdoor pool, unwind in the hot tub, and still make it to breakfast without rushing. The restaurant and bar cover your meals on-site, with room service if you'd rather eat in. Wi-Fi is solid throughout, which reviewers consistently flag as a real plus. Families will find the hotel accommodating: there are activities for kids and a kid-friendly setup throughout. The concierge, currency exchange, and full-service laundry handle practical travel needs without fuss. A convenience store and boutique shopping add small but useful extras. Our honest caveat: this is a three-star property, so expect comfortable and functional rather than polished luxury. If you want a calm lakefront base in Antananarivo with reliable amenities, this delivers.

Maison Charrette
Maison Charrette sits on Kimony Road in Morondava, a city on Madagascar's west coast known for its proximity to baobab country. That location alone sets a certain tone: unhurried, a little remote, genuinely off the beaten path. We don't have a full amenity list to work from, so we'll be honest with you about that. What we can say is that the guest satisfaction here appears remarkably strong, which tells us something real about the experience. The atmosphere reads as intimate and personal rather than corporate or anonymous. Morondava itself rewards slow exploration, and a property like this feels like a calm base for doing exactly that. If you're drawn to Madagascar's quieter, more rugged side, this address makes sense. Just go in knowing the details are sparse on paper. Sometimes that's fine. Sometimes you want certainty before booking. Our honest caveat: verify amenities directly with the property before you commit.

Antananarivo: where to stay and what to skip
The Haute-Ville around the Rova palace is the most atmospheric part of the city, and it's where Sakamanga Hotel sits on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo. You're 12 minutes walk from the Marché Artisanal and a short taxi ride from the Air Madagascar office on Avenue de l'Indépendance.
Skip anything on the lower town near Analakely. it's not dangerous during the day, but the streets flood in the wet season and the guesthouses there overcharge for what they deliver. Isoraka, on the upper ridge, is where Hotel Colbert operates and it's genuinely the safest and most functional neighborhood for business or longer stays. Taxis between Isoraka and the Haute-Ville run $2-4 and take 8 minutes.
West coast: baobabs, river trips, and real remoteness
Morondava is the base for the Avenue of the Baobabs, which is 7km north of town on the road toward Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. most people visit at sunrise or sunset. Hotel Baobab sits in the town center, 15 minutes walk from the main pirogue landing on the Morondava River.
Miandrivazo, further north on RN34, is where you pick up the Tsiribihina River drift if you're heading to Tsingy de Bemaraha. Hotel Tsiribihina is the only reliable option in town and river operators park their pirogues 5 minutes from the front door. The road between Morondava and Miandrivazo is rough. 4-5 hours in a 4x4 in dry season, longer after rain.
Islands: Nosy Be vs Sainte-Marie, honestly assessed
Nosy Be gets the most marketing attention and Sainte-Marie gets the better reviews from travelers who've done both. Constance Tsarabanjina sits on its own private island 25km from Hell-Ville by boat. transfers take 45 minutes and are included in the rate. If you want nightlife, cafés on the Rue du Commerce in Hell-Ville, and easy ATM access, Nosy Be wins.
Sainte-Marie is stripped back. One road, forest on both sides, and humpback whales passing from July through September within 2km of the coast. Princesse Bora Lodge is 10 minutes by car from Ambodifotatra town. close enough to grab supplies, far enough to feel like you've disappeared.
Isalo and the southwest: don't rush this region
Isalo National Park sits around Ranohira, 700km south of Antananarivo on RN7. The drive takes 10-12 hours from Tana, so most travelers split it with a night in Fianarantsoa or Ihosy. Le Relais de la Reine is 3km outside Ranohira on the park boundary. you can walk to the canyon trailheads in 20 minutes.
The RN7 is actually one of Madagascar's best roads, which sets a low bar but means it's genuinely driveable. Rent a 4x4 in Antananarivo for $60-90/day with driver, or take the train from Fianarantsoa south. the FCE railway is slow (6-8 hours to Manakara) but passes through scenery that justifies the entire trip.
Andasibe: lemurs at the door, jungle in your ears
Andasibe village is 2km from the park entrance on RN2, and the road from Antananarivo takes 3 hours on a good day. Vakona Forest Lodge sits in the Vakona private reserve, directly adjacent to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. the lemur island on the property lets you watch free-ranging ring-tails 50 meters from the dining room.
Book a guided night walk inside the park for $15-20 per person. chameleons, mouse lemurs, and sleeping birds are the payoff. The village itself has a few local restaurants on the main street where a rice-and-zebu plate costs $3-5. Don't try to day-trip this from Tana: staying one or two nights is the only way to get the early morning indri chorus, which starts at 6am and carries 2km through the forest.
Ultra-luxury Madagascar: what you actually get for $700-3,000/night
Anjajavy Private Reserve on the Anjajavy Peninsula is 90 minutes by charter flight from Antananarivo. there's no road, which is the point. The $700-1,200/night rate includes meals, guided lemur walks in the 700-hectare private forest, and kayaking in the mangrove channels. It's not a resort; it's a working conservation property that happens to have 25 beautiful bungalows.
Miavana by Time + Tide on Nosy Ankao Island takes that model further. At $1,500-3,000/night you get a private villa, a dedicated guide, diving, fishing, and all transfers from Antananarivo. We're not going to pretend everyone should stay here. But if you can, the level of access to pristine reef and untouched beach is categorically different from anything else in the Indian Ocean at a comparable price.

Madagascar's capital has more character than it gets credit for.
Antananarivo sits across 12 hills and the upper neighborhoods. Haute-Ville, Isoraka, Faravohitra. are genuinely pleasant to walk when it's not raining. The Rova palace dominates the skyline from almost anywhere in the city, and the Marché Artisanal de la Digue on Avenue de France is 15 minutes walk from Isoraka.
Sakamanga Hotel on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo is the budget traveler's anchor in this city. solid kitchen, bulletin board full of transport tips, and staff who actually know what's happening. Hotel Colbert in Isoraka is the business-class option: conference facilities, reliable WiFi, and a restaurant that handles international guests without fuss.
Avoid the area around the Gare Soarano train station for sleeping. it's fine during the day but noisy at night and the accommodation choices there are poor value. Taxis from Isoraka to the airport at Ivato run $10-15 and take 25-40 minutes depending on traffic on the Route de l'Aéroport.

Morondava is the main town on the west coast and the jump-off for the Avenue of the Baobabs. The avenue itself is 7km north on the Belo road, and every driver in town knows it. Hotel Baobab is the best-positioned option in the town center, close to the market on Rue du Commerce and the river landing.
Miandrivazo sits inland on the Tsiribihina River and most travelers only stop here to start the 3-day river drift to Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Hotel Tsiribihina is basic but clean, and the river operators who run the pirogue trips are based 5 minutes away on the river bank. Rates here are $55-85/night and that includes more hospitality than you'd expect.
The wet season from December through March turns the RN35 between Morondava and Miandrivazo into a serious challenge. A 4x4 is non-negotiable outside May-October. The RN7 south from Antananarivo to Ranohira is legitimately one of Africa's great drives. Le Relais de la Reine at Ranohira is 3km from the park entrance gate, set against the cliffs with a pool that faces the massif directly.
Ranohira itself is a small town with a few basic restaurants and a park office where guided walks cost $15-25 per person depending on the route. The Natural Pool circuit inside the park is 4-5 hours return and the guide is worth every ariary. Book through the lodge rather than a tout at the park gate.
The region gets cold at night from June through August. temperatures drop to 10-14°C after sunset and the lodge doesn't always warn guests about this. Bring layers. The nearest town with a pharmacy is Ihosy, 80km north on RN7.

The lodge restaurant serves solid Malagasy food. vary your order between the zebu dishes and the freshwater fish. The eastern rainforest gets serious rain even outside the wet season. pack a waterproof layer regardless of when you visit. Two very different islands, both worth the flight.
Nosy Be is Madagascar's main beach island and the most visited. Fascene Airport has direct flights from Antananarivo in 1.5 hours on Tsaradia. Hell-Ville on the south coast has ATMs, pharmacies, and the Rue du Commerce with its fish restaurants. Constance Tsarabanjina is 45 minutes by boat from Hell-Ville on its own private island, which is the reason the rating is 9.1.
Sainte-Marie sits off the northeast coast and is accessed by air from Antananarivo or by ferry from Soanierana-Ivongo on the mainland. Princesse Bora Lodge is 10 minutes from Ambodifotatra town, the island's only real settlement. far enough for quiet, close enough for supplies. Humpback whales pass the east coast of the island from July through September, often within sight of the shore.
Between the two islands, Nosy Be suits travelers who want some infrastructure around their beach time. Sainte-Marie suits those who want to genuinely disappear for a week. Anjajavy on the northwest coast and Nosy Ankao in the Radama Archipelago represent the outer edge of Madagascar's accommodation scene. both require charter flights from Antananarivo and neither is accessible by road. That inaccessibility is the entire point. Anjajavy Private Reserve has 700 hectares of dry deciduous forest with sifaka lemurs and a private beach on the Mozambique Channel.
Miavana by Time + Tide on Nosy Ankao takes a different approach: more architecture, more focus on diving and fishing, with villa-style accommodation on a near-pristine island. The $1,500-3,000/night rate is all-inclusive, and 'all-inclusive' here means private boat, dedicated guide, chef, and access to reef that sees fewer than 200 visitors a year.
Both properties are 90 minutes by charter from Ivato Airport and arrange the flights directly. factor in $300-500 for that transfer on top of the room rate if it's not included. These aren't hotels with a premium price tag. They're private wilderness experiences that happen to have beds.

Romantic
Le Relais de la Reine at Ranohira puts you in a stone-and-timber bungalow facing the Isalo massif with a pool between you and the cliffs. Sunsets here are unhurried and the nearest other tourist is probably 3km away on a hiking trail.
Culture
The Haute-Ville in Antananarivo, specifically the ridge around the Rova palace and the Andafiavaratra Museum, is where Madagascar's history sits closest to the surface. Sakamanga Hotel on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo is 15 minutes walk from the royal palace entrance and 10 minutes from the Marché Artisanal.
Family
Vakona Forest Lodge in the Vakona reserve near Andasibe has a lemur island and a crocodile park on-site. kids don't need to be sold on it. You're also 2km from the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park entrance, so guided family walks are easy to arrange on any morning.
Budget
Sakamanga Hotel in Antananarivo's Haute-Ville delivers from $45/night with a kitchen that's better than anything else at this price point in Madagascar. The noticeboard in the lobby is genuinely useful for finding shared transport onward to Morondava or Andasibe.
Beach
Constance Tsarabanjina on its own private island 45 minutes by boat from Hell-Ville, Nosy Be, is the benchmark for beaches in Madagascar. white sand, clear water, and a reef you can snorkel directly from the shore. It's not cheap at $200-280/night, but the privacy and the coral justify it.
Foodie
Morondava town center, specifically the restaurants within 10 minutes walk of Hotel Baobab, serves the best fresh seafood on the west coast for $8-15 a plate. Zebu brochettes, grilled prawns, and fresh coconut-based curries are the local staples and the quality is legitimately good.
איך בדקנו את המלונות האלה
כל מלון ברשימה זו עבר את אותה הערכה. הנה בדיוק איך אנחנו מדרגים אותם.
We reviewed 8,000+ options across the main regions of Madagascar. We cut anything that used misleading beach-view photos taken from a drone 500 meters offshore, anything charging Nosy Be prices for Tana-quality rooms, and every guesthouse that calls itself a 'lodge' because they planted two banana trees. Madagascar is a destination where the price-to-quality gap is brutal at the mid-range. too many $80/night rooms that deliver $25 value. We kept only the hotels where the rating, the price, and the actual experience align.

Expect hotel prices 25-40% above shoulder season rates, and book Le Relais de la Reine or Princesse Bora Lodge at least 2 months out.
Sweet Spot (April-June)
April through June is the best window in Madagascar. The rains are finished, the parks are green, and the crowd hasn't arrived yet. Temperatures in Antananarivo sit at 18-22°C and the west coast runs 24-28°C. The Donia music festival on Nosy Be in late May creates a local spike in island prices. avoid that week or book 6 weeks ahead.
Shoulder Season (September-November)
September through November works well for the south and west. Isalo is dry and the baobab corridor near Morondava is at its most dramatic. Temperatures on the coast hit 30-32°C by November, which is pleasant for beach destinations. The whale watching season wraps up in September, but diving off Nosy Be is at its clearest.
Wet Season (December-March)
Cyclone season affects the northeast and east coast hardest. Sainte-Marie sees serious weather from January through March and several lodges close entirely. The west coast and highlands are more manageable, and Antananarivo city hotels run 20-30% lower than peak rates. If you're doing Isalo or Morondava only and you can handle rain, December through March is genuinely affordable.
איך להזמין מלונות ב Madagascar
אסטרטגיות הזמנה חכמות לMadagascar.
Book the charter flight before the room
For Anjajavy and Miavana, the charter flight from Ivato Airport in Antananarivo costs $300-500 per person and only runs when there's demand. Contact the lodges directly before you book flights into Antananarivo. they arrange these transfers and you don't want to arrive in Tana to find the charter isn't running that day.
July on Sainte-Marie: 3 months notice minimum
Princesse Bora Lodge on Sainte-Marie has under 30 rooms and a repeat-guest clientele that books for the whale watching season from July through September. If you're aiming for July, contact them in April at the latest. The same applies to Constance Tsarabanjina on Nosy Be. peak-season availability goes fast and rack rates apply.
Carry ariary for national park fees
Park entrance fees at Andasibe-Mantadia and Isalo National Park must be paid in ariary (Malagasy currency) at the gate. Isalo entry costs approximately 45,000-55,000 ariary per person. ATMs in Ranohira are unreliable; withdraw cash in Fianarantsoa or Ihosy on the way south. Antananarivo's BNI on Avenue de l'Indépendance is the most reliable ATM before you leave the capital.
Generators matter more than star ratings
Power cuts (délestage) are scheduled daily in Antananarivo, often lasting 4-8 hours. Before booking any hotel in Tana, ask explicitly whether they have a generator that covers rooms, not just the lobby. Hotel Colbert in Isoraka and Sakamanga Hotel both maintain full generator backup. smaller guesthouses often don't.
The RN7 is the exception, not the rule
Madagascar's roads are rough. but RN7 from Antananarivo south to Ranohira is genuinely driveable in a standard vehicle during the dry season. Every other major route (RN1 to Morondava, RN2 beyond Andasibe, RN13 in the south) requires a 4x4 or a flight. Budget $60-90/day for a 4x4 with driver from reputable operators in Antananarivo, which is far less stressful than renting self-drive.
Respect fady (local taboos) near lodges
Fady are local taboos that vary by region and can affect what you wear, eat, or do near certain areas. Near Andasibe, pointing at lemurs with a finger is considered disrespectful in some villages. use an open hand instead. Lodges like Vakona Forest Lodge brief guests on local fady; pay attention to this briefing, because locals notice and it matters more than any review you'll leave.
שאלות נפוצות על מלונות ב Madagascar
תשובות ישירות מהצוות שלנו.
What's the best area to stay in Antananarivo?
Isoraka and the Haute-Ville are your two real options. Isoraka sits on the upper ridge and puts you 10 minutes walk from the Marché Artisanal de la Digue and a short taxi ride ($3-5) from the airport road. Skip the guesthouses around Analakely market. the street noise starts at 5am and it shows in the $15-20/night savings you'd make.
How much should I budget per night for hotels in Madagascar?
Realistically, $45-80/night gets you solid budget accommodation in Antananarivo or Morondava town center. Mid-range runs $100-220/night at places like Hotel Baobab near the Avenue of the Baobabs or Hotel Colbert in Isoraka. Luxury lodges on private reserves or islands start at $700/night and climb steeply. but they include meals, guides, and transfers, which changes the math.
When is the best time to visit Madagascar?
April through November is the dry season and the window most travelers target. July and August are peak months: expect crowds at Isalo National Park and prices 25-40% higher than April. The cyclone season runs December through March. not a dealbreaker on the west coast or in the highlands, but risky for Sainte-Marie Island and the northeast.
Is it safe to stay in central Antananarivo?
Yes, with some common sense applied. Isoraka and the Haute-Ville around the Rova palace are fine for walking during the day. Analakely and the Zoma market area get sketchy after dark. take a taxi from your hotel rather than walking back, and budget $3-6 for that ride.
Do I need to book hotels far in advance in Madagascar?
For Nosy Be and Sainte-Marie Island, yes. book 2-3 months ahead for July and August. Isalo is tighter than people expect: Le Relais de la Reine at Ranohira has only 18 rooms and fills up fast in peak season. Antananarivo hotels like Sakamanga on Rue Andrianary Ratianarivo generally have availability 2-3 weeks out, except during the Donia music festival in late May.
What's the best way to get between hotels in different regions?
Domestic flights with Air Madagascar or Tsaradia connect Antananarivo (Ivato Airport) to Nosy Be, Sainte-Marie, and Fort Dauphin. expect $80-200/one-way. Road transfers are an adventure: Tana to Morondava takes 8-10 hours on RN1/RN35 and a 4x4 is non-negotiable outside the dry season. Budget an extra $50-120 for private transfers when your lodge is remote.
Which Madagascar region is best for wildlife?
Andasibe, 140km east of Antananarivo on RN2, is the easiest lemur spotting in the country. Vakona Forest Lodge sits right on the park boundary and you can hear indri calls from the terrace before breakfast. Ranomafana National Park in the highlands is richer in species but the 7-hour drive from Tana is punishing without a stop in Ambositra. Both regions are best April through October when the forest trails are dry.
Are all-inclusive hotels worth it in Madagascar?
At the top end, absolutely. Miavana by Time + Tide on Nosy Ankao Island includes all meals, diving, and boat transfers in the $1,500-3,000/night rate. without that, logistics alone would cost $300-400/day. At mid-range, skip all-inclusive: Morondava town has good local restaurants within 5 minutes walk of Hotel Baobab where you'll eat better for $8-15 a meal.
What's the difference between Nosy Be and Sainte-Marie Island?
Nosy Be is bigger, busier, and more developed. Hell-Ville has actual streets, bars, and ATMs. Sainte-Marie is quieter, with one main road running 25km down the island from Ambodifotatra, and whale watching from July through September is genuinely world-class. Nosy Be prices run $140-280/night for quality options; Sainte-Marie is similar but with fewer choices.
Can I travel to Madagascar on a tight budget?
You can, but Madagascar will test you. Sakamanga Hotel in the Haute-Ville area of Antananarivo offers doubles from $45/night with a reliable restaurant and a good noticeboard for finding transport. Outside Tana, budget options drop in quality fast. Hotel Tsiribihina in Miandrivazo at $55-85/night is the exception, not the rule, in rural towns.
Do Madagascar hotels include breakfast?
Most mid-range and luxury lodges include breakfast, and it's genuinely good. fresh tropical fruit, local rice dishes, and strong Malagasy coffee. Budget hotels like Sakamanga charge $5-8 extra for breakfast; it's worth it there because the kitchen is solid. Always confirm at booking since policies vary even within the same property seasonally.
What should I know about hotel check-in customs in Madagascar?
Bring your passport. every hotel is legally required to record it, and smaller guesthouses will hold it overnight, which is normal. Tipping is not compulsory but $1-2/day for housekeeping goes a long way in a country where average wages are low. Power cuts (délestage) are common in Antananarivo, so ask your hotel whether they have a generator before you book anything requiring reliable electricity.
