Sal vs. Boa Vista: which island is right for you?
Sal is the busier, more developed option. Santa Maria has a real town behind it. restaurants on Rua 1 de Junho, a fish market, surf schools, and nightlife that actually goes past 10pm. Boa Vista is the opposite: calmer, emptier, with Praia de Chaves stretching for kilometers without a sun-lounger in sight.
If this is your first time in Cabo Verde and you want convenience plus beach, pick Sal. If you've been before, or if crowds genuinely bother you, Boa Vista is the upgrade. The hotels on Boa Vista also tend to deliver better value. Odjo d'Agua Hotel on Praia de Chaves is a perfect example of that.
The real deal on Cabo Verde's weather
The archipelago sits in the Atlantic off Senegal, so the climate is dry and warm almost year-round. November through June stays at 22-26°C with reliable sun and the northeast trade winds making beach days genuinely comfortable. July through October brings the bruma seca. a Saharan dust haze that softens the light and occasionally drops visibility.
Rain is rare and short. When it does rain, it's usually a 20-minute shower on Santiago or Fogo, not the all-day downpour you'd get in southern Europe. Don't let the low-season classification scare you off the shoulder months. October and November often have near-perfect conditions and hotel prices 30-40% lower than peak.
How to get around without overpaying
Inter-island flights with TACV and Binter are the fastest option and prices are reasonable if you book 3-4 weeks out. Sal to Boa Vista runs about $50-70 one way. The ferry CV Interilhas is the affordable alternative for the São Vicente to Santo Antão crossing, which costs under $10 and takes 35 minutes across the channel from Porto Grande.
On Sal, aluguers (shared minibuses) run from Espargos to Santa Maria for around $1.50 and leave from the main square when full. Taxis are plentiful but negotiate before you get in. the ride from Sal airport to Santa Maria should be $15-20, not the $30 some drivers will quote.
Where to eat beyond your hotel restaurant
The cachupa is what you're after. it's the national dish, a slow-cooked stew of corn, beans, and whatever meat is around. In Mindelo, the market stalls near Mercado Municipal serve it for breakfast for under $3. On Sal, Restaurante Chez Pastis on Rua 1 de Junho does a solid version and is a 5-minute walk from most Santa Maria hotels.
Fresh fish is everywhere and almost always worth ordering. Skip the tourist menus near the main beach promenade in Santa Maria. the prices jump 40% and the quality drops. Walk one block back to the local restaurants on the streets parallel to the beach and you'll eat better for half the price.
What nobody tells you before you book
Air conditioning is not guaranteed even in mid-range hotels. On Sal and Boa Vista the trade winds usually keep rooms cool enough, but always confirm AC if you're booking between July and September. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. a $150/night room with no fan in August is nobody's idea of a holiday.
The EASE travel authorization is mandatory for most visitors and needs to be done before arrival. It costs around $30 and takes 48 hours. don't leave it for the night before your flight. Also: tap water is desalinated on most islands and safe to drink, but the taste is unusual enough that most visitors buy bottled water anyway.
The islands worth skipping (and the ones that aren't)
Santo Antão is spectacular for hiking. the Paul Valley between Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Atlantic. But there are no vetted beach hotels here, and the ferry from Mindelo is the only way across. It's a day trip destination, not a base.
Brava is the greenest, most remote island and genuinely beautiful. The problem is getting there: the ferry from Fogo runs infrequently and cancels in bad weather. It's the most developed tourist zone in Cabo Verde, which means convenience. but also crowds in December through February.
The windsurf and kitesurf scene on Sal is world-class. The flat-water lagoon at Kite Beach, just east of Santa Maria, draws pros and beginners alike from October through June. Most of the beach hotels are positioned within 5-10 minutes walk of this strip.
Avoid staying in Espargos, the capital 18 km north. It's cheaper, yes, but there's no beach, the restaurant scene is thin, and taxis to Santa Maria cost $15-20 every time. The savings aren't worth the daily logistics.

One thing to know: Boa Vista has almost no public transport. Renting a quad bike or 4x4 for a day costs $60-80 and is the only sensible way to reach the deserted beaches on the east coast. Factor that into your budget.

This is where Cesária Évora grew up, and the city hasn't forgotten it.
Hotels here range from the no-frills Pensão Residencial Chez Loutcha in the Centro neighborhood to the polished Hotel Porto Grande on Rua Baltasar Lopes da Silva. The difference between $45 and $170 a night buys you a lot more style, but both put you within 10 minutes walk of the main attractions.
The beach situation is the one honest caveat. Laginha Beach is pleasant but small. it's a 10-minute walk from most Centro hotels. For serious beach days, you'll need to rent a car or take a taxi north to Baia das Gatas, about 12 km out.
