First-timer's guide to picking your Guam base
Almost everyone should start in Tumon Bay. Pale San Vitores Road is the spine of the tourist zone, and for good reason: beach is 5 minutes west, restaurants are right outside your door, and you don't need a car for the first few days. Hotels here range from $120/night at Pacific Islands Club to $500/night at The Tsubaki Tower.
If your budget caps at $100/night, Tamuning is the honest choice. Garden Villa in the Harmon area gives you decent rooms, easy access to Route 8, and about a 20-minute taxi ride to Tumon Beach for around $12. Don't book Dededo thinking you'll pop to the beach daily. it doesn't work that way.
How to beat Guam's resort fee trap
Resort fees in Tumon Bay can add $25-45 per night to your bill. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: someone books a $130 room, then checks out paying $175. Always ask for the total rate including taxes and fees before confirming. The Hyatt Regency and Westin on Tumon Bay are the most transparent. others, less so.
Booking directly with the hotel often gets the fee waived or reduced, especially in low season from August-October. Call the front desk on Pale San Vitores Road directly rather than going through a third-party platform. You'd be surprised how often a 5-minute phone call saves you $40/night.
Guam for divers and water sports people
Gun Beach off Gun Beach Road in northern Tumon is the go-to for snorkeling and shore diving. Guam Reef Hotel sits right there, literally a 3-minute walk from the entry point. The Blue Hole and Crevice dive sites are a 15-minute boat ride from most Tumon Bay operators.
Tumon Bay itself has calm, clear water most of the year. Depth Sports Center and Sea Creatures Guam both operate out of Tumon and offer two-tank dives from $80-110. Book your hotel in northern Tumon near Gun Beach Road rather than the southern Pale San Vitores end if early-morning dive boats are your priority.
Getting around Guam without getting ripped off
Taxis in Guam don't use meters in the traditional sense. fares are roughly set by route. Tumon to Hagåtña is $15-20. Tumon to the airport is $12-18. From Tumon to the south end near Umatac, budget $35-45 each way. Negotiate before you get in, always.
The Guam Mass Transit Authority buses run along Route 1 but frequency is low. sometimes 45-60 minutes between buses. For day trips to Ritidian Point Wildlife Refuge in Yigo or Talofofo Falls, a rental car from the airport ($35-55/day) is the only realistic option. Several Tumon Bay hotels have car rental desks in-lobby.
What to eat and where near your Tumon hotel
Chamorro Village in Hagåtña runs a Wednesday Night Market that's genuinely worth the trip. kelaguen, red rice, shrimp patties, all under $10 per plate. It's about 15 minutes by taxi from Tumon Bay. Skip the hotel buffets on Wednesday nights; nothing on property beats the market.
Back in Tumon, the Pleasure Island section of Pale San Vitores Road has solid options beyond the chain restaurants. Pika's Cafe near the Hyatt is a local favorite for breakfast, and the night market vendors near Ypao Beach Park on weekends are far cheaper than anything resort-facing. A full meal runs $8-15 per person.
When to book and when to avoid Guam
The Christmas-New Year window (December 20. January 5) is the hardest and most expensive time to find a room in Tumon Bay. Japanese Golden Week in late April and Korean Chuseok in September-October also spike demand fast. Book at least 3 months out for those windows, and expect to pay peak rates of $200-500/night across Tumon.
Typhoon season runs roughly July-November. That doesn't mean you can't travel then. many typhoons miss Guam entirely. but travel insurance is non-negotiable if you book August or September. The upside: hotel rates in Tumon drop 20-35% during this window, and shoulder weeks in October can be genuinely great value.

Tumon Bay is where the bulk of Guam's tourism infrastructure lives, and for good reason. Pale San Vitores Road runs parallel to the beach, lined with hotels, restaurants, and shops. You're never more than a 10-minute walk from the water, and the main tourist attractions. Two Lovers Point, Ypao Beach Park, Underwater World. are all close.
Hotels here range dramatically. Pacific Islands Club starts at $120/night and caters heavily to families with its on-site water facilities. The Tsubaki Tower at the top end charges $300-500/night and delivers on it. Seven of our 10 vetted hotels sit in this corridor, which tells you everything about where the quality is concentrated.
One thing worth knowing: the northern end of Tumon near Gun Beach Road has a noticeably different feel from the polished resort strip further south. It's quieter, slightly cheaper, and popular with divers. If the main resort-row buzz isn't your thing, Gun Beach Road is Tumon without the crowds.

Tamuning sits just south of Tumon, straddling Route 1 and Route 8. It's not a beach destination. the coastline here is less accessible than Tumon Bay. But the Harmon area has solid infrastructure: grocery stores, local restaurants, and easy highway access if you're renting a car.
Garden Villa Hotel is our vetted pick here at $75-110/night. It's a genuine best-value option for people who want a clean, comfortable base without paying Tumon Bay resort prices. The trade-off is a 15-20 minute taxi ride to the main beach at Ypao.
Tamuning works best as a base if you're spending most of your time exploring the island rather than lounging on a hotel beach. The Chamorro Village night market in Hagåtña is 10 minutes south by car, and the airport is under 10 minutes. Practical, not glamorous.

You're about 25 minutes by car from Tumon Bay. That's not unworkable if you have a rental, but it's a long way from the beach for daily visits. The upside: Ritidian Point Wildlife Refuge is only 15 minutes north, and the Dededo Flea Market on weekends is a genuinely good local experience.
Be honest with yourself before booking here. If you're spending most of your time on Guam's beaches or the Tumon Bay strip, the extra $50-70/night for a Tumon hotel is worth it. Dededo makes sense for budget travelers who are island-hopping or spending more time inland.

Gun Beach Road branches off toward the coast from the northern end of Tumon Bay. It's technically still Tumon, but the vibe is distinct from the polished Pale San Vitores resort corridor. Fewer tour buses, more serious beach people and divers.
