Getting to South Sudan
Ethiopian Airlines flies Addis Ababa to Juba daily, 2 hours. Kenya Airways operates Nairobi to Juba 3 times weekly. Return fares run $400-800 from East African hubs. The overland crossing at Nimule from Kampala, Uganda is a common budget option: 8-10 hours total including the border.
Visa on arrival at Juba Airport costs $100 cash. Bring a yellow fever certificate or you will be turned back. Register with your embassy within 24 hours of arrival. UNDSS registers all UN and NGO staff in-country.
Juba: The Capital on the Nile
Juba sits on the White Nile. The waterfront near Juba Bridge has basic bars and river views. The Konyo Konyo market is the most authentic urban experience. Ministries and NGO offices cluster around the airport road. The city lacks formal tourist sites but has gritty energy.
Power cuts are daily. The Radisson Blu and Juba Grand Hotel have generators. Internet is available but slow. Most transactions are cash in USD. The city operates on Kampala and Nairobi supply chains.
Nimule: Uganda Border and Wildlife
Nimule is 200 km south of Juba on the main road to Uganda. The national park has hippos in the Nile, elephants crossing the road, and good birding. The Uganda border crossing is 2 km from Nimule town, one of the busiest in the region.
Nimule Paradise Hotel and Nimule River Lodge are the two lodging options, both $130-200/night. Game drives run $30-50 with a ranger. The drive from Juba takes 4-5 hours on a paved road.
Boma National Park and the Great Migration
Boma National Park holds one of Africa's least-known wonders: the white-eared kob migration, with 1 million animals moving through January to April. In scale it rivals the Masai Mara. Tiang, Mongalla gazelle, and buffalo are also present.
