Trindade sits inland from the capital and gives you a quieter, more local experience of São Tomé island. This small guesthouse is run by a friendly family and serves home-cooked meals by request. Roça São João
This restored cocoa plantation estate in the south of the island is one of the most atmospheric places to stay in the entire archipelago. The buildings date from the Portuguese colonial era and have been thoughtfully renovated with local materials. Chef João Carlos serves extraordinary meals using produce grown on the estate itself. The surrounding jungle and proximity to the Angolares fishing village make it a genuine cultural experience. Advance booking is essential as there are very few rooms.

Hotel Praia Inn
Located in Santo António, the main town on Príncipe island, this is the most established mid-range option for travelers arriving on the smaller island. The rooms are clean and air conditioned, and the staff can organize boat trips and excursions. Proximity to the town square means restaurants and local shops are walkable. The hotel fills up quickly during peak season, so booking ahead is strongly advised. A good functional base for exploring Príncipe before heading to the more remote resorts.

Casa Malanza
Casa Malanza occupies a beautiful stretch of the northwest coast near the town of Neves, away from the capital crowds. The guesthouse has a handful of bungalows set among gardens that run down to the beach. Meals are prepared fresh daily using local seafood. The northwest receives fewer visitors than the south, so you get a noticeably more peaceful atmosphere. Staff can arrange excursions to nearby colonial-era ruins and isolated beaches.

Bom Bom Island Resort
Bom Bom sits on a small connected island at the northern tip of Príncipe, reached by a wooden footbridge over the water. The bungalows are built on stilts over the sea or set back in the forest, and the design uses natural materials throughout. Snorkeling directly off the jetty is excellent, with coral and marine life in clear water. The dining room serves the best food on Príncipe, with fresh catch and tropical fruit prepared with real skill. This is one of the finest small eco-luxury resorts in West Africa and worth the price for the right traveler.

Pestana Equador
The Pestana Equador sits directly on the equator line on Rolas Island, a small islet off the southern tip of São Tomé, accessible only by boat from Porto Alegre. The resort has private beaches on both sides of the island and a pool overlooking the ocean. Bungalows are spacious and well furnished, with terraces facing the sea. Diving, sport fishing, and boat trips to neighboring beaches are all organized on-site. The isolation is the point here, and guests who want total seclusion will find it completely delivered.

The hotel sits right on the Marginal waterfront avenue, putting you close to the ferry terminal and the main government buildings. Rooms are dated but functional, with air conditioning and private bathrooms. The breakfast is simple but included in the rate. Street noise from the avenue can be an issue in lighter rooms. For the location relative to cost, it is hard to beat in São Tomé city.

Perched on the hillside above the city in the Miramar district, this hotel offers sweeping views over the Bay of Ana Chaves. The pool area is one of the better ones in the capital and is well maintained. Rooms are mid-range in quality, comfortable enough for a multi-night stay. The restaurant serves decent local fish dishes. The uphill walk from the city center can be tiring without a taxi.

Omali Lodge
Omali Lodge is the best full-service hotel in São Tomé city, located in the Água Grande area close to the town center and the beach. The pool is large and well kept, the bar stocks good local and international drinks, and the restaurant is consistently the strongest in the capital. Rooms are properly finished with reliable air conditioning, hot water, and good Wi-Fi. The staff are experienced with international guests and speak English. It remains the benchmark against which other hotels in the city are measured.

TAP Air Portugal flies Lisbon to Sao Tome City in 6.5 hours. Flights run 3-4 times weekly, costing $600-1200 return depending on season. Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways connect via Addis Ababa and Nairobi. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for dry season (June-September).
The international airport is 5 km from the center of Sao Tome City. Taxis charge $5-8 for the ride. No buses. Omali Lodge and Pestana offer airport transfers for guests.

Obo National Park covers 30% of Sao Tome island and almost all of Principe. It is home to 28 endemic bird species including the Sao Tome Fiscal and Giant Sunbird. Pico de Sao Tome (2,024m) takes 8-10 hours round trip. A guide is mandatory ($30-50/day through the park office).
Bombaim waterfall is a 3-hour hike from the main road, accessible without 4x4. Bring rubber boots: the trail gets muddy year-round. The park entrance is at km 12 on the road south from Sao Tome City.
The Cocoa Route: Plantations and History
Sao Tome was once the world largest cocoa producer. The colonial roças (plantations) are now partly restored tourism sites. Roca Sundi in the northeast runs 3-hour tours and serves fresh chocolate on-site. Roca Monte Cafe at 800m altitude is cooler and offers views over the rainforest.

Rent a 4x4 for the south and Obo
The road south of Angolares and all Obo National Park access requires 4x4. Rental agencies near the port in Sao Tome City charge $60-80/day. Shared taxis cover the paved north-south road fine. For anything off-road or in the rainy season, 4x4 is not optional.
Get a local SIM card on arrival
CST and Unitel are the two networks. A SIM costs $2-3 at the airport or any telecoms shop in Sao Tome City. Data is cheap. Mobile coverage is good in the capital and along the main road. Principe has weaker coverage; download offline maps before flying over.
