Jolly Harbour vs. Valley Church: which side of the beach is right for you?
Jolly Harbour is busier, more convenient, and better connected. You've got the marina, a proper supermarket on Harbour Drive, three or four decent restaurants within walking distance, and water taxis running most of the day. It suits people who want options without getting in a car.
Valley Church Bay, about 10 minutes south, is a different mood entirely. The beach is narrower, the water is crystal clear, and the snorkeling off the bay is significantly better than at Jolly Beach proper. Cocos Hotel Antigua sits right above Valley Church Bay and is the best positioned property on the whole west coast. If you're here to slow down and actually use the ocean, go south.
How to avoid the classic Jolly Beach booking mistake
The number one error we see: booking a 'beachfront' room at a Jolly Harbour property without checking the actual layout. Plenty of rooms face the marina or the car park at the back of the complex, not the water. Always ask for a specific room category. 'beach wing' or 'ocean facing'. and get it confirmed in writing before you pay.
The second mistake is booking Dickenson Bay hotels when you actually want Jolly Beach. Dickenson Bay is on the northeast coast near the airport. It's 45 minutes from Jolly Beach by road. Rex Halcyon Cove and Antigua Village Beach Resort are both excellent, but they're a completely different destination. Know which coast you're committing to.
The honest guide to all-inclusive hotels on Antigua's west coast
All-inclusive in Antigua covers a huge range. Jolly Beach Resort and Spa is the most affordable true all-inclusive on the west coast, and it delivers solid value at $150-220/night. The food is decent, the beach is right there, and the entertainment is low-key in the best way. Don't expect Cancun-style mega-resort energy.
Galley Bay Resort and Spa in Five Islands Village is the adult-only option and a serious step up. The restaurant quality is genuinely good by Caribbean all-inclusive standards, and the beach at Five Islands is quieter than Jolly Beach. It's priced from $190/night and honestly earns it. Curtain Bluff in Morris Bay operates differently. it's more of a premium all-inclusive with a focus on watersports and fine dining, at $350-650/night. No comparison in quality.
When to book, when to wait, and when to pay more
Antigua Sailing Week at the end of April fills English Harbour and sends ripples across the whole island. West coast hotels get booked out weeks in advance and prices spike 20-30%. If you're not sailing, skip that week entirely or book Jolly Beach Guesthouse at $55-85/night and accept it'll be lively. Christmas through New Year is the other blackout period. Rates at Galley Bay and Curtain Bluff during late December hit their absolute ceiling.
The best value window is May through mid-June. The dry season hasn't fully ended, temperatures sit around 28-30°C, and you'll find mid-range rooms at $100-150/night that cost $180-220 in February. September and October are technically the cheapest months but also the most likely to catch a tropical storm. We'd rather pay a little more in May and actually enjoy the trip.
Getting around from Jolly Beach: what actually works
Within the Jolly Harbour gated community, you can walk almost everywhere. The beach is 8-10 minutes from the marina, the supermarket on Harbour Drive is 5 minutes, and the main restaurants cluster around the marina boardwalk. For anything beyond that, you need a plan. Taxis wait near the Jolly Harbour entrance gate and charge $30-50 to English Harbour or Shirley Heights.
Car rental is the move if you're staying more than 3 days. You'll want to drive Fig Tree Drive through the rainforest, stop at Darkwood Beach, and get down to Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour without negotiating taxi prices every time. Budget $60-80/day for a basic car. Most hotels can arrange it. or ask at the marina and someone will point you to a local operator who's cheaper than the airport desks.
Luxury at Jolly Beach: when it's worth the splurge
Curtain Bluff Resort in Morris Bay is the best hotel on Antigua. Full stop. The 9.4 rating isn't an accident. You're getting a private beach at Morris Bay, watersports included in the rate, and a wine cellar that's genuinely famous in Caribbean hotel circles. At $350-650/night it's not for every trip, but if you're celebrating something, it earns every dollar.
Blue Waters Resort and Spa at Soldier Bay is the other luxury anchor, rated 9.2. The setting at Soldier Bay is dramatic: volcanic rock, calm water, and a very contained feeling that makes it feel more exclusive than its size. If Curtain Bluff is fully booked, Blue Waters is the right call. Don't confuse either with 'expensive for Antigua.' Both are expensive for the Caribbean. and both back it up.
