Most first-timers land at V.C. Bird International Airport and head straight to a resort without seeing any of the island. Don't do that. Give yourself at least one afternoon in downtown St. Johns. walk Redcliffe Quay, grab lunch near Heritage Quay, and get a feel for the place before you disappear into an all-inclusive.
Base yourself at Dickenson Bay or Runaway Bay for the beach. Both are within 15 minutes of town and have enough restaurants and bars that you're not trapped in your hotel. Runaway Bay is the quieter of the two. Dickenson Bay gets cruise ship crowds in the mornings but clears out by afternoon.
The honest guide to St. Johns neighborhoods
Downtown St. Johns is compact. Heritage Quay is tourist-facing and busy on cruise days. Redcliffe Quay, one block away, is more authentic. better restaurants, fewer souvenir shops. Fort Road connects downtown to the hotel strip heading north toward Dickenson Bay and is where the Barrymore Hotel sits.
Five Islands is underrated. It's only 8km from the capital but feels completely separate. Galley Bay Resort sits here and the beach is genuinely stunning. English Harbour is for sailing types and history nerds. Nelson's Dockyard is the real deal, not just a tourist attraction.
How to pick the right hotel for your trip
If you're on a tight budget, Airport Hotel Antigua gets you a bed and a functional base at $55-85/night. no complaints for what it is. Heritage Hotel in downtown St. Johns adds some character at $75-99/night and puts you close to the Cathedral and Redcliffe Street. Neither are beach hotels, so be clear on that before you book.
Mid-range travelers have the best selection. Barrymore Hotel on Fort Road and Buccaneer Beach Club at Runaway Bay both sit in the $110-175/night range and hit the sweet spot between price and location. For romance or a real splurge, Siboney Beach Club at Dickenson Bay at $150-225/night consistently outperforms hotels that cost twice as much.
When to visit St. Johns (and when to avoid it)
The sweet spot is May through June. Crowds from peak season have cleared, prices drop 20-30%, and the weather stays dry and around 27-29°C. The Antigua Sailing Week in late April bridges the seasons and is worth timing your trip around if you like boats and beach bars.
Avoid late August through October if you're hurricane-averse. Antigua sits in the hurricane belt and while direct hits are rare, you'll deal with heavy rain, grey skies, and the occasional disrupted flight. If you go during this window, make sure your travel insurance covers weather cancellations.
Getting around: taxis, buses, and rental cars
