Tufandag is built for activity. The cable car runs year-round, there are 10 ski runs in winter, and summer hiking trails start literally outside the hotel doors. If you have kids or came for the outdoors, Tufandag wins. But if you want peace and a lake view at breakfast, Nohur is your spot.
Getting around Gabala without a car
It's doable, but you need to plan it. Marshrutkas from Gabala bus station run to Tufandag for about $1.50 and take 25 minutes. They stop running around 7pm, so late returns from dinner require a private taxi.
Ride-hailing apps like Bolt work in Gabala city but not reliably in the mountain zones. For Demirchi Village or Yengidje Village, agree on a price with a local taxi driver before you get in. $8-12 for most rides within the district is fair.

Budget here means $55-95/night and covers the Chenot Budget Wing near Nohur Lake and Gabaland in the city centre. These are clean and functional. Don't expect a pool or mountain view at these rates.
Mid-range ($105-245/night) is where Gabala really delivers. Qafqaz Riverside, Qafqaz Sport, Galateia, and Marcan Resort all sit here, and the quality jump from budget is significant. At the luxury end, Chenot Palace and Tufandag Mountain Resort Hotel ($280-520/night) are worth every manat if wellness or ski-in access is the priority.
What to do around Nohur Lake beyond the hotel pool
The Nohurgol Park footpath is free and takes about 45 minutes to walk at a relaxed pace. Pedal boats rent for $5-8 per half hour near the main park entrance off the Gabala-Nohur road. Early mornings on the lake are genuinely stunning, especially in late May when the surrounding hills are still green.
Don't skip the small teahouses on the eastern side of the lake road. They serve local piti (lamb and chickpea soup) for $3-5 and you'll rarely see another tourist. It's a 12-minute walk from Galateia Resort's main entrance.
Ski season in Gabala: what you actually need to know
Tufandag resort has 10 marked ski runs, a 1.8 km gondola cable car, and reliable snow from late December through February. Day lift passes cost $20-30 for adults, $12-18 for kids. Equipment rental is on-site and reasonably priced at $15-20 per day.
Book Qafqaz Sport or Tufandag Mountain Resort Hotel for ski season. walking to the gondola takes under 5 minutes. The resort gets busy on weekends with Baku day-trippers, so if you want quieter slopes, plan for Tuesday-Thursday.
Day trips from Gabala worth the drive
Sheki is 75 km west on the E119 and takes about 1 hour by car. The Khan's Palace in Sheki Old Town is the real reason to go. tiled ceilings, stained glass, and a UNESCO listing. Sheki Saray Hotel is a solid base if you want to split your trip between Gabala and Sheki.
Vandam Waterfalls are 30 km north of Gabala city, up a mountain road that gets rough after rain. Take a 4x4 or a local taxi that knows the route. drivers at Gabala bus station usually offer the trip for $25-35 return and wait for you.
