Port Lucaya wins for location. You're on the marina, Count Basie Square has live music most evenings, and the Port Lucaya Marketplace has 80+ shops and restaurants within a 5-minute walk. Pelican Bay Hotel sits right here and it earns that Best Location badge honestly.
Lucaya Beach is calmer, more resort-focused, and better if you want sand over street life. Grand Lucayan Resort and Lighthouse Pointe both sit on this stretch. The tradeoff: you'll pay $15-25 more per night and need a short walk or taxi to reach the Marketplace buzz.
The real deal on Freeport all-inclusives
Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach on Fortuna Beach Road runs around $150-220/night and covers food, drinks, and most activities. For solo travelers or couples who want zero decisions, it works. But Fortuna Beach is about 20 minutes east of Port Lucaya, so you're effectively choosing resort life over exploring.
Memories Grand Bahama on Lucaya Beach is the more upscale all-inclusive option at $160-230/night. It's closer to the action and the beach quality is better. If you're committed to all-inclusive, Memories makes more geographic sense than Viva Wyndham.
West End: worth the drive or a waste of time?
West End is 45 km from Port Lucaya and most visitors never bother. That's actually the point. Old Bahama Bay Resort and Yacht Harbour sits right on the water here with a full marina and rates from $200-249/night. It's quiet, private, and genuinely different from the resort-strip experience in Lucaya.
Castaways Resort is also out this way, starting at $55/night. Don't expect luxury: it's a no-frills option that suits budget travelers who care more about being in the Bahamas than being near a beach bar. If you're renting a boat or doing serious fishing, West End makes real sense.
How to get from Grand Bahama Airport to your hotel
Grand Bahama International Airport is on West Airport Road, about 5 km northwest of Freeport City Centre and roughly 10-15 minutes by taxi to most Lucaya hotels. Official taxis charge $25-30 to Port Lucaya. There's no Uber here, and the airport jitneys are unreliable at odd hours.
Pre-arrange a hotel shuttle if you're arriving after 9pm. Several resorts including Grand Lucayan and Lighthouse Pointe offer pickups. It usually costs the same as a taxi but you'll avoid the negotiation dance that sometimes happens curbside late at night.
Freeport on a budget: what's actually possible
Starting at $55/night at Castaways Resort in West End, Freeport is one of the more affordable Bahamas entry points. Royal Islander Club in Freeport City Centre runs $75-99/night and is decent for the price, though you'll spend $10-15 per taxi ride to reach Lucaya's beaches. Factor that in.
Food doesn't have to break the bank either. The straw market near Port Lucaya Marketplace has local food vendors with conch fritters for $5-8. Bahamas Canteen on East Sunrise Highway is a local spot where a full lunch costs under $15. Skip the resort restaurants for everyday meals.
Freeport for couples: where to actually stay
Forbes Hill Villa Estate is in a different league. At $320-500/night, it's priced like a villa rental and feels like one. It's in the Forbes Hill area east of the city with privacy, space, and none of the resort-corridor noise. If the budget allows, the rating of 9.0 isn't a fluke.
