Continue to Heywoods Beach (5 minutes from the fish market). Morning snorkeling here is best before 10am when the water is calmest. Speightstown's Best Beaches Ranked
Mullins Beach is the most popular: calm water, beach chairs ($10 BBD), a good bar, and sea turtles most mornings. Heywoods Beach is less crowded with better snorkeling (reef 50 meters out). Six Men's Bay is a working fishing village with no facilities but genuine local atmosphere.
For families, Heywoods wins. The entry is gradual and there is no drop-off. Mullins has a steeper entry after 10 meters. If you want seclusion, walk 10 minutes north past Port St. Charles to Gibbs Beach. It is technically private access but nobody enforces it. Bring your own shade and water.
Day Trips from Speightstown
St. Nicholas Abbey (15 minutes east, $40 BBD) is a Jacobean plantation house from 1658 with a working rum distillery. The heritage railway runs through sugar cane fields to a hilltop viewpoint. Budget 3 hours. Cherry Tree Hill, 5 minutes further, has the most photographed view in Barbados.
Animal Flower Cave at North Point (20 minutes, $25 BBD) has sea caves with natural rock pools. Harrison's Cave (35 minutes, $150 BBD) is the island's biggest attraction.
