Fort George is Belize City's best neighborhood for hotels. Full stop. You're walking distance from the Fort George Lighthouse, the Tourism Village on North Front Street, and the Marine Terminal for water taxi connections to the cayes.
Most of our top picks sit within a 10-minute walk of Marine Parade Boulevard. That's not a coincidence. The area has proper street lighting, less foot traffic from the Southside, and you'll feel comfortable walking to dinner at Celebrity Restaurant without thinking twice. Properties here run $110-220/night but the safety and convenience justify it.
Southside Belize City: honest advice for budget travelers
If $55-85/night is your ceiling, Southside is where you'll end up. Hotel Mopan on Regent Street West is a solid pick here. The neighborhood isn't dangerous during the day but it demands common sense after dark, especially around Albert Street south of the Swing Bridge.
We've seen travelers book the cheapest guesthouse they could find near King Street and regret it by night one. Spend a little more for Hotel Mopan or push your budget toward Fort George. The $20-30 difference per night buys genuine peace of mind.
Getting around Belize City without getting ripped off
Taxis don't use meters in Belize City. Agree on the price before you get in, always. A ride from Fort George to the Biltmore Plaza Hotel on Princess Margaret Drive should cost $8-12 BZD. From the airport on the Northern Highway to any city center hotel, expect $25-35 USD, which is fair.
Water taxis from the Marine Terminal on North Front Street are the most useful transport link in the city if you're heading to Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. Buses to San Ignacio and the western interior leave from the Novelo's Bus Terminal area near the Western Bus Terminal on West Collet Canal. Schedule those departures early as afternoon buses fill fast.
When to book and how early
Belize City has two windows that will catch you out. December through February is the dry season and cruise ship traffic from the Tourism Village swells the city mid-week. Hotel rates jump 20-30% from November onwards and Fort George properties sell out first.
Book Fort George hotels at least 6-8 weeks ahead for any travel between late November and Easter. September and October are the cheapest months but that's for a reason. Hurricane season means a real chance of disruption, so only go then if you're flexible on dates and watching the weather closely.
What to actually do in Belize City
The Museum of Belize on Gabourel Lane is genuinely excellent and almost empty on weekday mornings. It costs $5 USD to enter. St. John's Cathedral on Albert Street is the oldest Anglican church in Central America and worth 20 minutes of your time.
The Image Factory gallery on North Front Street has rotating local art exhibitions and is free most days. For a day trip, Altun Ha ruins are 45 km north on the Northern Highway and reachable by taxi for $80-100 round trip. Skip the souvenir stalls at the Tourism Village and walk four blocks inland for the same items at half the price.
The honest truth about Belize City hotels
A lot of hotels here oversell their location. 'Waterfront views' can mean you're staring at Haulover Creek, which isn't quite what the photos suggest. Read the specific street address before you book, not just 'Belize City.'
Air conditioning reliability is the single biggest variable in mid-range hotels here. It's hot and humid year-round, 27-33°C in peak months, and a unit that cuts out at 2 AM will ruin your trip. The Fort George Lighthouse and the Marine Terminal on North Front Street are both walkable from every hotel here. Hotels in Fort George run $55-220/night depending on the property. That's a wide spread but it reflects the actual variety on offer, from the budget-friendly Coningsby Inn on Cork Street to the Radisson Fort George on Marine Parade Boulevard. The neighborhood has decent restaurants within a few blocks and you won't feel stranded without a taxi.
One thing to know: Marine Parade Boulevard gets noisy from cruise ship traffic on weekdays between October and April. Book a room facing inland if noise is an issue for you. Ask specifically at check-in, because front-facing and courtyard rooms at the same property can feel like different hotels.
