Hopkins is not a city. It's a 3-kilometer strip of Garifuna village along the Caribbean coast of Belize, roughly 180 kilometers south of Belize City by road. There's one main road. Hopkins Main Street. and almost everything you need is on or near it.
South Hopkins has the densest cluster of restaurants, bars, and beach access points. Central Hopkins is quieter and more residential, but still well connected. North Hopkins is where the upscale dive resorts sit, and it's noticeably more remote. great if that's what you want, isolating if it's not. Know which section you're booking before you commit.

Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort in North Hopkins is the gold standard. It runs its own PADI dive center, offers daily trips to Glover's Reef and South Water Caye Marine Reserve, and the logistics are seamless. Staying on-site means you're on the boat at 7am without scrambling for a tuk-tuk.
If Hamanasi's rates ($130-490/night depending on room type) are above your budget, Beaches and Dreams in South Hopkins also organizes dive trips and costs $105-160/night. They work with local operators and can get you to the same reefs. It's not a dedicated dive resort, but the access is solid and the location on the south beach is excellent.
Hopkins on a budget: what actually works
Hopkins Bay Hostel sits in South Hopkins and keeps rates at $45-75/night, which is genuinely rare for beachside accommodation in Belize. It's basic. don't expect air conditioning in every room. but you're steps from the water and within walking distance of the village's best street food around Yugadah Restaurant.
Funky Dodo Backpackers in Central Hopkins is the other smart call at $55-90/night. The communal vibe is real: travelers swap dive boat recommendations over breakfast. Cook your own meals in the shared kitchen and you can keep daily costs under $60 total. That's tough to beat on the Belizean coast.
When to book and when to skip Hopkins
February through April is the dry season sweet spot. Temperatures hit 27-30°C, seas are calm for diving, and the village isn't overwhelmed. Prices are higher. expect $130-220/night for mid-range options. but it's worth it. Book 6-8 weeks out minimum for this window.
Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th is a legitimate reason to visit: drumming, dancing, and a real cultural celebration that's not staged for tourists. But hotels in Central and South Hopkins fill completely 3-4 weeks before. If you're planning around it, lock in your accommodation by early October. The last two weeks of November are otherwise shoulder season with decent rates.
Hopkins vs. the Placencia Peninsula: which to pick
Placencia has more restaurants, a more developed tourist infrastructure, and easier connections to Belize City. Hopkins has a quieter beach, a more authentic Garifuna atmosphere, and prices that run 20-30% lower for comparable accommodation. If you want nightlife and convenience, Placencia wins. If you want to actually relax and dive, Hopkins is smarter.
Kanantik Reef and Jungle Resort sits on the Placencia Peninsula near Seine Bight. technically not in Hopkins village, but it's in our list because the quality justifies the 20-kilometer drive south. At $270-420/night it's all-inclusive and genuinely remote, with its own airstrip. That's a different category of stay entirely.
Neighborhoods to avoid (and why)
There's no dangerous neighborhood in Hopkins, but there are booking traps. Avoid any guesthouse that's more than a 10-minute walk from Hopkins Main Street without its own transport or beach access: you'll end up marooned. Some properties near the Sittee River turnoff advertise Hopkins addresses but are 15-20 minutes walk from the village with no shade on the road.
The stretch of road heading north past Jaguar Reef toward Seine Bight is undeveloped and has no amenities. A couple of cheap guesthouses sit out there with no tuk-tuk access and spotty Wi-Fi. Unless you've specifically rented a scooter, those are a bad call. Stick to North, Central, or South Hopkins proper.

That's a real spread. you can pick your budget without sacrificing location. The beach in front of South Hopkins is calm and walkable for a solid kilometer.
The only downside: it's the noisiest strip, especially on weekends when bars near the main junction stay open late. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a room facing away from the road. Beaches and Dreams handles this well with its layout.
