Walking the UNESCO Town of St. George's
Start at King's Square where the town crier performs at noon on weekdays. Walk east on Duke of York Street to St. Peter's Church (1612), the oldest Anglican church in the Western Hemisphere. The graveyard has tombstones from the 1600s. Free entry, 30 minutes.
Continue uphill to the Unfinished Church on Government Hill Road, a Gothic ruin abandoned in the 1870s that is now one of Bermuda's most photographed spots. From here, walk 10 minutes north to Fort St. Catherine ($10, 45 minutes). The fort has tunnel exhibits and a panoramic view of the Atlantic. Return via Barry Road past the colorful houses.
Beach Guide: St. George's and the East End
Tobacco Bay is the main beach: protected cove, calm water, snorkel gear rental ($10), and a beach bar with $12 Dark 'n' Stormy cocktails. It is a 10-minute walk from town. Go before 11am on cruise ship days.
Fort St. Catherine Beach, 2 minutes past Tobacco Bay, is wider and less crowded. The snorkeling is better here with more reef coverage. Clearwater Beach in St. David's (15 minutes by scooter) has the whitest sand and warmest water on the east end. Tucker's Town beaches (South Shore) are reserved for resort guests at The Loren and Rosewood.
Getting Around Without a Car
Bermuda bans tourist car rentals. Your options: scooter ($55-75/day from Oleander Cycles on Water Street), electric Twizy ($99/day), ferry (Hamilton route, $5 per ride), bus ($3.50), or bicycle (free at some hotels). Buy a day pass for unlimited ferry and bus: $19.
St. George's is completely walkable. For beaches, a scooter opens up the entire east end in 30 minutes. The Bermuda Railway Trail connects St. George's to Hamilton (22km) for cyclists. Ferry to Hamilton: 30 minutes, runs until 8pm weekdays. After that, you are dependent on taxis ($35-45 to Hamilton).
History Beyond the Surface
The Tucker House Museum on Water Street ($5, 30 minutes) shows how wealthy Bermudian families lived in the 1700s. The Bermuda National Trust Museum on Duke of Kent Street covers the island's role in the American Civil War as a Confederate blockade-running base.
The Town Hall on King's Square has free exhibits about Bermuda's African diaspora. Pilot Darrell Square commemorates the first Black pilot who guided ships through the reefs. The slave cemetery behind St. Peter's Church is unmarked but significant. Budget half a day for the full historical circuit.
Eating and Drinking in St. George's
Wahoo's Bistro on Water Street is the top restaurant: fish chowder with sherry peppers ($14), grilled wahoo ($32), and a harbour view. Book ahead on weekends. White Horse Pub on King's Square does excellent fish sandwiches ($18) and has the best waterfront terrace in town.
Tempest Bistro near the square is good for lunch: salads and sandwiches $15-22. Mama Angie's does $10 lunch plates (home cooking, cash only). For cheap eats, the Art Mel's Spicy Dicy diner on York Street has fish cakes for $4. Grocery shopping: St. George's Supermart on York Street is small but stocks basics. For better selection, ferry to Hamilton.
Day Trip Itinerary: Caves, Aquarium, and Nature
Take the 9am bus to Crystal Caves in Hamilton Parish (20 minutes, $3.50). The underground lake tour takes 30 minutes ($22). Walk 5 minutes to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) on Flatts Inlet ($10, 90 minutes). The seahorse exhibit and local reef tank are highlights.
After BAMZ, catch the bus to Blue Hole Park (free), a network of mangrove trails and blue water sinkholes. The main cave is swimmable in summer. Return to Flatts Village for lunch at Rustico ($20-30) then ferry or bus back to St. George's by 4pm. Total day cost: $50-70 per person including food and transport.

Tucker's Town is Bermuda's most exclusive enclave, 15 minutes south of St. George's. The Loren at Pink Beach and Rosewood Bermuda are the two luxury resorts here. Private beaches, cliffside dining, and rates from $195 to $650/night.
The area is quiet and residential. No shops or public restaurants outside the hotels. Mid Ocean Club golf course is here but members only. The pink sand beaches (Natural Arches Beach, Pink Beach) are some of the best in the Atlantic. You need a scooter or taxi to reach St. George's town.

Hamilton Parish stretches along the north shore between St. George's and the capital. Grotto Bay Beach Resort is the standout: it has its own underground caves connected to the hotel by stairs. Crystal Caves, Bermuda's top natural attraction, is a 5-minute drive.
The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) at Flatts Inlet is excellent for families. Blue Hole Park has free swimming in flooded sinkholes. This is the nature-focused pocket of Bermuda's east end.

Salt Kettle is a small harbour area on the edge of Hamilton. Bermuda Glencoe Hotel here offers an affordable base with ferry access to both Hamilton and St. George's. Flatts Village has the Palmetto Hotel near the aquarium and Flatts Inlet.
These are quieter alternatives if you want a central position between St. George's and Hamilton. Neither has much nightlife, but both have waterfront charm. The bus and ferry network connects you to everywhere within 30 minutes.

Water hits 28C by July. All beaches are swimmable. Tobacco Bay is packed by 11am. This is the most expensive season with hotels at full rates. Bermuda Day (May 24) kicks off the season. Book 3 months ahead for July and August. The ferry runs extended hours.
Spring (Mar-May)
Rates drop 30% from peak. Water is 20-22C by May, swimmable for most. The Bermuda International Film Festival is in March. Fewer cruise ships in St. George's harbour. The best time for historical walks and outdoor exploring without the heat. Good Friday kite flying at Horseshoe Bay is an island tradition.
Autumn (Oct-Nov)
Water stays warm (25-27C) from summer. Fewer tourists. Hotels lower rates 20% after Labour Day. Some restaurants in St. George's reduce hours. The Bermuda Fitted Dinghy racing season wraps up. Hurricane risk exists through November but direct hits are rare.
Winter (Dec-Feb)

Unlimited rides on all ferries and buses for the day. The St. George's to Hamilton ferry alone costs $5 each way. If you take 3+ rides in a day, the pass pays for itself. Purchase at the ferry terminal or any bus station. The pass also works on the St. George's minibus.
Rent a scooter on day one
Bermuda bans tourist car rentals. Oleander Cycles on Water Street in St. George's rents scooters for $55-75/day. The east end has quieter roads than Hamilton. Practice in the hotel parking lot first because left-hand driving on narrow roads takes adjustment. Helmets are mandatory.
Avoid Tobacco Bay on cruise ship days
When a cruise ship docks in St. George's, Tobacco Bay fills to capacity by 11am. Check the Bermuda cruise ship schedule online. On ship days, go to Fort St. Catherine Beach instead (2 minutes further, half the crowd) or ride 15 minutes to Clearwater Beach in St. David's.
Book The Loren 4-6 months ahead for summer
The Loren at Pink Beach has just 45 rooms and is Bermuda's most sought-after boutique hotel. Summer rates start at $350/night and it sells out by March for July-August stays. Rosewood has more availability but higher rates. Spring shoulder season (April-May) is the smart booking window.
Add the 11.75% hotel tax to your budget
Bermuda charges an 11.75% hotel occupancy tax on all accommodation. Most Bermuda booking sites show rates before tax. On a $200/night room, that is $23.50 extra. Plus resort fees at properties like Grotto Bay ($30/night). Always check the total before confirming.
