Uyuni Town: What You Need to Know
Avenida Ferroviaria is the main strip. Tour agencies, restaurants, and ATMs line both sides for 4 blocks. The Banco Union ATM on the corner of Ferroviaria and Sucre is the most reliable. Withdraw cash here because cards don't work at most restaurants.
The town shuts down by 10pm. Extreme Cold Pub on Avenida Potosi is the only reliable late-night option. For dinner, Minuteman Pizza on Avenida Ferroviaria serves the best food in town. A large pizza costs Bs 50-60.
Salt Hotels: How to Choose
Hotel de Sal Luna Salada in Colchani is the better value ($120-180/night). It has a rooftop terrace overlooking the Salar and rooms are entirely salt-constructed. Heated rooms, which matters at -10C.
Palacio de Sal ($280-380/night) is the original salt hotel, also in Colchani. More upscale with better food and a small museum about salt construction. Both include breakfast and transfers from Uyuni town. Book direct for rates 10-15% cheaper than leading booking platforms.
The 3-Day Salar Tour: What to Expect
Day 1: Salar de Uyuni, Isla Incahuasi (giant cacti), perspective photos. Day 2: drive south through the Siloli Desert to Laguna Colorada (flamingos). Day 3: Sol de Manana geysers, Laguna Verde, drop-off at Chilean border or return to Uyuni.
Tours cost Bs 800-1,400 per person ($115-200) depending on vehicle quality and group size. Groups of 6 in a Land Cruiser are standard. Pay extra for a group of 4. Bring your own sleeping bag; the dormitory blankets at altitude refuges are insufficient. Food is basic but adequate.
Colchani Village: The Salt Flat Gateway
Colchani sits where the highway meets the Salar's eastern edge. Population: about 800. The village has a small salt processing plant you can visit for free, and a market selling salt crafts (Bs 10-50).
Both major salt hotels are here. A taxi from Uyuni town costs Bs 70-100. Some hotels include transfers. The advantage of basing here: you can walk onto the Salar at sunset without paying for a tour. The disadvantage: no restaurants, no ATMs, no nightlife.
Train Cemetery: Worth the Walk
3km south of Uyuni town on the road to the airport. Walk it in 35 minutes or take a Bs 10 taxi. Free entry. Dozens of rusting locomotives from the 1940s-1960s sit abandoned on the tracks.
Best light is sunrise or the hour before sunset. The rusty orange metal against the flat desert makes for great photos. It takes 30-45 minutes to explore. Combine it with an airport pickup or drop-off. Watch for sharp metal edges.
Budget Tips for the Uyuni Area
The cheapest way: overnight bus from La Paz (Bs 120), 1 night in Hostal Avenida ($45), join a 3-day tour (Bs 800), cross into Chile. Total: under $200 for the whole experience.
For comfort without luxury: fly BOA from La Paz ($80), 1 night at Hotel Tonito ($65-95), day tour with a premium agency (Bs 300), 1 night at Luna Salada ($120). Total: around $350. The salt hotel experience is worth the splurge.

Classic white hexagonal salt patterns. Clear blue skies. Perfect for photography. But brutally cold: nights regularly hit -15C on the Salar. July and August are busiest. June and September are the sweet spot with fewer crowds. All tours run daily.
Mirror Season (Jan-Mar)
Thin layer of water covers the Salar creating a perfect mirror of the sky. The most photographed version of Uyuni. But rain can cancel tours, roads flood, and some lodges close. February has the most water (best mirror) but also the most cancellations. Kachi Lodge stays open year-round.
Shoulder (Apr & Nov)
April still has some water for partial mirror effects. November is dry but not yet peak season. Both months offer lower prices, easier bookings, and shorter queues at Isla Incahuasi. Weather is unpredictable: pack for both rain and freezing nights.
Deep Wet (Dec)
Heavy rain can make the Salar inaccessible. Some 3-day tours stop running. Town hotels are cheapest. Only come in December if you're flexible on timing and can wait for a weather window. Remote lodges near Laguna Colorada may close for the season.

Withdraw cash in Uyuni before heading to the Salar
Banco Union ATM on Avenida Ferroviaria and Sucre is the most reliable. Prodem ATM on Avenida Potosi is backup. Maximum withdrawal: Bs 2,000 ($290) per transaction. Cards don't work at remote lodges, most restaurants, or tour agencies. Bring enough cash for your entire stay.
