The Ottoman Old Town: A Walking Route
Start at Plava Voda spring at the eastern edge of town. The turquoise water flows from a cliff face into stone channels. Follow the path west along the stream for 5 minutes to reach the Painted Mosque.
From the mosque, climb 10 minutes uphill to Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM). The views from the top cover the entire Lašva valley. On a clear day you can see the peaks of Vlašić to the north. Allow 2 hours for the full loop.
Plava Voda: Travnik's Crown Jewel
Blue-green water gushing from limestone rocks, surrounded by old wooden restaurants on stilts. It sounds like a tourist trap but it's not. Locals come here for picnics, coffee, and grilled trout.
The restaurant right at the spring source serves trout caught meters away (12 BAM). Burek from the bakery on the road above costs 3 BAM. Sit by the water in the morning when the light hits the pool. This is arguably the most photogenic spot in central Bosnia.
Vlašić Mountain: Summer and Winter
30km north of Travnik, Vlašić reaches 1,943m. Winter: 3 ski lifts, mostly intermediate runs, day pass 30 BAM. Equipment rental: 40 BAM/day. Snow is reliable December through March.
Summer: alpine meadows, paragliding (100 BAM for a tandem flight), and hiking trails. The Babanovac meadow at the summit plateau is a 2-hour hike from the road end. Mountain huts serve grilled lamb and cheese for 15-20 BAM. The drive up takes 40 minutes on a paved but winding road.
Ivo Andrić's Travnik
Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andrić was born in Travnik in 1892. His novel 'Travnik Chronicle' is set during the Napoleonic era when the town was the Ottoman vizier's seat.
The birth house museum on the main street costs 5 BAM (15 minutes max). The novel is more interesting than the museum. But reading 'Travnik Chronicle' before visiting transforms the fortress and the consul houses from old buildings into living history.
Day Trip Loop: Travnik to Jajce
Jajce is 1 hour north by car or bus (10 BAM). The town's 20-meter waterfall drops right in the center where the Pliva and Vrbas rivers meet. Jajce Fortress (3 BAM) above the falls has panoramic views.
Combine both in a 2-3 day loop from Sarajevo: Sarajevo to Travnik (1.5 hours), overnight, Travnik to Jajce (1 hour), overnight, Jajce to Sarajevo (2.5 hours). Total transport cost: under 50 BAM by bus.
Local Food Worth Seeking Out
Travnik ćevapi are made with a mix of beef and lamb (Sarajevo uses only beef). The result is slightly fattier and, many argue, tastier. Ćevabdžinica Hari on the main street: 5 BAM for a portion with lepinja bread, raw onion, and kajmak.
Kajmak deserves its own mention. This clotted cream is made in the Vlašić highlands and sold at the market in Travnik for 8-10 BAM per kilo. Spread it on warm bread. It's reason enough to visit. Also try klepe (Bosnian dumplings with meat) at any aščinica for 6-8 BAM.

Both areas have accommodation but the character is completely different.

30km north of Travnik at 1,400-1,943m elevation. Ski lifts, mountain huts, and resort hotels. The road is paved but steep with switchbacks.
Winter is the main season: 3 lifts, reliable snow, day pass 30 BAM. Summer brings hikers and paragliders. Hotels here are newer construction, more resort-style, and 20-30% pricier than town.

The stretch along the Lašva River between the old town and the main road. A few newer hotels and apartments sit here with parking and river views.
More practical than charming. Good if you're driving: easy parking and quick access to the Vlašić road and the highway to Sarajevo. A 5-minute walk to the old town core.

Ottoman Time Capsule
Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM), the Painted Mosque (free), and the vizier's residences make Travnik a 500-year time capsule. The Ivo Andric birth house (5 BAM) adds literary context. You can see all of it in half a day and spend less than 15 BAM total.
Quiet Balkan Romance
Dinner at Plava Voda restaurant with turquoise spring water flowing past your table (trout for 12 BAM). Walk to the fortress at sunset for valley views with nobody else around. Aparthotel Stari Grad has rooms with stone walls and river sounds. This is romance without the tourist markup.
Bosnia's Best Value
Pansion Lamija at 100 BAM/night puts you in the center. Ćevapi lunch for 5 BAM. Fortress entry 5 BAM. Bus from Sarajevo 14 BAM. A full day including food, sightseeing, and accommodation costs under 130 BAM ($72). Try finding that anywhere in Western Europe.
Family-Friendly Base
The fortress grounds are safe for kids to explore (open spaces, solid walls). Plava Voda spring has ducks and shallow water. Vlašić Mountain has beginner ski slopes (30 BAM day pass, 40 BAM rental). A family meal at Plava Voda restaurant costs 30-40 BAM for four people.
Ćevapi Pilgrimage
Ćevabdžinica Hari is a legitimate food pilgrimage site. The beef-lamb mix with fresh kajmak is distinct from Sarajevo's version. Portions cost 5 BAM. Vlašić Mountain kajmak (8-10 BAM/kg at the town market) is some of the best dairy product in the Balkans. Klepe (dumplings) at the aščinica for 6-8 BAM.
Mountain & Valley Nature
No beaches, but Vlašić Mountain has summer hiking with alpine meadows at 1,900m. Paragliding tandem flights cost 100 BAM. Plava Voda spring is a natural swimming spot in summer (cold but refreshing). The Lašva valley has cycling paths along the river. Winter skiing runs December through March.

Stari Grad Fortress (5 BAM) opens at 9am. Go first thing for the best light and no other visitors. The guard sometimes opens 15 minutes early if you're waiting. Allow 45 minutes for the full circuit including the clocktower and the outer walls.
Buy Vlašić kajmak at the morning market
The daily market on the main street sells fresh kajmak from Vlašić highland farms. Get there before 10am for the freshest supply. Costs 8-10 BAM per kilo. Bring a cooler if you're driving. It keeps 2-3 days refrigerated. This is world-class dairy.
Cash only in most places
Travnik's restaurants and smaller hotels are cash only. The UniCredit ATM on the main street and the Sparkasse ATM near the bus station are the two reliable options. Withdraw enough for your stay. Cards work at Hotel Hajduk and Mountain Resort Vlašić Premium but not at pansions or local restaurants.
