Foz do Iguacu airport (IGU) is 15 km from Centro and taxis run a flat R$70-80 to most Centro hotels. If you're heading straight to Parque Nacional, a taxi to Bourbon Cataratas or Belmond das Cataratas runs R$90-110 and takes 20 minutes with no traffic.
Don't let the driver take you via Avenida Jorge Schimmelpfeng during morning or late afternoon rush: the route through Rua Bartolomeu de Gusmão is faster and most local drivers know it. Settle the fare before you get in the cab. the meter isn't always used for airport runs.
Getting to the falls without the headache
The public bus from Avenida República Argentina in Centro to the Parque Nacional entrance costs R$5 and runs every 20 minutes starting at 7:30 am. It's slow on busy days. 40 minutes if there's traffic on BR-469. but it's reliable and drops you 200 meters from the park gate.
If you're staying near the park already, skip the bus entirely and walk or take a 5-minute R$20 taxi to the gate. Park entry is R$130/person for Brazilians and R$250 for foreigners. Buy your ticket online at the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu official site the night before. they limit daily visitors and sellouts happen in January and July.
The Centro vs. Parque Nacional trade-off
Centro hotels run $45-160/night and give you access to restaurants, shops, and the bus network. The catch is that the falls are 25-40 minutes away, and you'll make that commute every day of your trip.
Parque Nacional hotels start at $200/night and top out at $750. But factor in no daily transport costs, no park admission queues, and access before the crowds arrive at 8 am. For trips of 2 nights or fewer, the math often favors the park hotels more than people expect.
How to do the Argentine side on a day trip
Catch the shared minibus from the terminal on Rua Almirante Barroso at 8 am for the best light on the Argentine trails. The round trip costs R$80-100 and crosses the Ponte Tancredo Neves into Puerto Iguazú, with park drop-off included. Argentine park entry is $15-50 depending on nationality.
We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: people do the Brazilian side and the Argentine side on the same day. Don't. Each park is a full half-day minimum. Do the Brazilian side first, then dedicate a separate day to the Argentine trails. the Garganta del Diablo walkway on the Argentine side alone takes 3 hours if you're doing it properly.
Itaipu Dam: worth it or skip?
Itaipu is the world's second-largest hydroelectric dam and it sits 12 km north of Centro on the Paraná River. The panoramic tour runs R$100-180 and the evening illumination show is genuinely impressive. Porto Meira neighborhood hotels like Recanto Park Hotel are the closest base: you're 10 minutes away by car.
Skip the basic tour and book the full infrastructure visit if you can. It goes inside the dam structure. Most people who visit say the basic tour left them underwhelmed; the full visit is the one worth the detour. Check tour schedules on the official Itaipu Binacional site. they fill up on weekends.
The three borders area: what's actually worth your time
The Marco das Três Fronteiras on Rua Antonio Raposo Tavares in Porto Meira marks where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay meet on the Paraná and Iguaçu rivers. The viewpoint is free and the sunset over the confluence is legitimately one of the best photos you'll take in Foz. It's 15 minutes from Centro by taxi for around R$35.
Ciudad del Este in Paraguay is technically right across the Ponte da Amizade and many visitors cross for shopping. It's chaotic, loud, and the electronics deals are rarely as good as advertised. If you go, take only what you need and use the official crossing point. don't accept offers from fixers near the bridge entrance.
