Staying in Centro Histórico: what nobody tells you
The cobblestones on Rua da Lapa and Rua Dona Geralda look incredible in photos. They're also hard on luggage wheels, slippery in the rain, and genuinely painful if you're carrying a heavy bag from the bus stop. Budget an extra R$30 for a mototáxi from the rodoviária so you arrive intact.
Room location matters more here than almost any city we cover. Front-facing rooms on Rua do Comércio get bar noise until midnight on weekends. Courtyard-facing rooms at the same pousada cost the same and sleep like a dream. Always ask specifically which side your room is on.
Paraty's beach neighborhoods: Jabaquara vs. Trindade
Praia do Jabaquara is 15 minutes walk from Praça da Matriz, shallow enough for kids, and calm even in high season. It's the best compromise if you want old town access and a beach. Pousada Casa Turquesa sits right here at $150-210/night, which is genuinely good value for the location.
Trindade is a different world. It's 30 km south on the RJ-165, connected by bus from the rodoviária for around R$7. The beaches, especially Praia do Cachadaço and Praia Brava, are wilder and less polished. If you're choosing between them, go Jabaquara for convenience and Trindade for the experience.
Paraty's high season: what to know before you book
January is brutal. Temperatures hit 32°C, rain comes in hard bursts, streets flood near the waterfront, and every hotel in Centro Histórico charges peak rates. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times: people book January because that's when they have time off, then spend half their trip waiting for the rain to stop.
FLIP, the literary festival, is the other crunch point. usually late July. It brings 70,000 people to a town of 40,000. Rooms at Pousada Literária de Paraty and Pousada Pardeiro sell out 3 months ahead. If you're not here for FLIP specifically, come in May or early September instead.
How to get around Paraty (and when to just walk)
Inside the old town walls, walking is your only real option. Cars are banned on the historic cobblestones, and the whole centro is about 600 meters across. Forte Defensor Perpétuo is a 10-minute uphill walk from Praça da Matriz. Praia do Jabaquara is 15 minutes on flat ground.
For anything outside town, buses leave from the rodoviária on Rua Jango Pádua. Trindade costs R$7 and takes 30 minutes. Schooner day trips depart from the dock on Av. Roberto Silveira around 10am and cover Ilha Comprida and Saco do Mamanguá for R$80-120 per person. Book through your pousada the night before.
Paraty on a budget: how to do it right
Pousada do Príncipe in Centro Histórico is the honest budget choice at $55-85/night. It's not luxury, but it's clean, it's inside the old town walls, and you're 7 minutes walk from the main waterfront. Skip the hotels near the bus terminal on the edge of town. saving R$30/night isn't worth being 20 minutes from everything.
Food is where Paraty budgets collapse. Restaurants on Rua do Comércio facing the waterfront charge tourist prices. Walk one block back to Rua Marechal Deodoro and prices drop by 40%. The Mercado Municipal near Av. Roberto Silveira has fruit, pastries, and cheap lunch plates that locals actually eat.
Luxury in Paraty: why the top properties justify the price
Pousada Marendaz in Laranjeiras sits outside the tourist circuit entirely. It's a 10-minute drive from the old town on the road toward Cunha, with Atlantic Forest views and a pool that doesn't feel shared with 30 strangers. At $260-380/night it's the most expensive property we list, and it earns it.
Paraty Mirim Pousada costs even more ($290-420/night) but it's 25 km from the bustle on a quiet bay with a dedicated boat transfer. Both properties are fundamentally different experiences from the Centro Histórico pousadas. If you're celebrating something real, don't compromise on where you sleep.

Centro Histórico is a UNESCO-protected colonial grid of white-walled buildings, stone streets, and churches that have stood since the 18th century. Most of Paraty's best restaurants are on Rua do Comércio and Rua Marechal Deodoro, both inside the car-free zone. You don't need transport for anything if you're based here.
