Stay in Boa Viagem. It's that simple. The neighborhood runs along a 7 km stretch of beach off Avenida Boa Viagem and has the best mix of hotels, restaurants, and transport links. You can walk to the reef pools at low tide, grab dinner on Rua Baltazar Pereira, and still be at Marco Zero in 25 minutes by taxi.
Don't try to stay in Recife Antigo thinking you'll be 'central'. It sounds good on paper but the nightlife noise carries until 3am and hotel quality per dollar is genuinely worse than Boa Viagem. We've seen this mistake hundreds of times. Spend the extra R$30 taxi fare and sleep somewhere decent.
Boa Viagem: what the beach strip is actually like
Boa Viagem beach is protected by a natural reef about 1-2 km offshore, which means the water inside is calm enough for swimming at low tide. The best access points for calm water are near Rua Bruno Veloso and Rua das Navegantes. The beach itself is wide, maintained, and lined with coconut vendors charging R$5-8 per drink.
The hotel quality varies wildly even within a few blocks. Properties directly on Avenida Boa Viagem command a premium, but anything within 2 blocks of the beach is still very walkable. Stay south of Rua Conselheiro Aguiar for the calmer, more residential end of the strip. North of there gets busier and louder, especially on weekends.
Getting around Recife without a car
The metro Line 1 is your best friend for north-south movement. It runs from Aeroporto through Boa Viagem, Imbiribeira, and all the way up to Recife station near the old city. Tickets are R$4.50 and the trains are air-conditioned. Buses cover the east-west gaps but the system is complicated for first-timers. Use apps like Moovit to navigate bus routes.
Taxis and Uber both work well here. A ride from Boa Viagem to Instituto Ricardo Brennand in the Várzea neighborhood runs about R$35-50 and takes 30 minutes. For Porto de Galinhas, arrange a shared van through your hotel rather than paying solo taxi rates of R$200+.
Eating in Recife: where to go near your hotel
Pernambuco cooking is some of the best in Brazil and Recife is where you taste it properly. Look for tapioca filled with coalho cheese on the Boa Viagem beachfront in the morning, around R$8-12 per piece. For sit-down meals, the cluster of restaurants around Rua Barão de Souza Leão in Boa Viagem handles everything from fresh seafood to traditional carne de sol.
Skip the tourist-targeted spots on the beachfront promenade itself. Prices jump 30-40% for the view and the food quality drops. Walk one block inland and you'll find the same dishes at half the price. Rua dos Navegantes and the streets behind Avenida Boa Viagem are where locals actually eat.
Recife in Carnival season: what you actually need to know
Recife's Carnival is different from Salvador or Rio. It's frevo-based street carnival centered around Galo da Madrugada in the city center, which draws over 2 million people to the streets around Rua Amélia and the Parque 13 de Maio area. The energy is extraordinary. But hotels book out 3-4 months in advance and rates in Boa Viagem hit $150-300/night for properties normally priced at $80-130.
If you're coming for Carnival, lock in your hotel by November at the latest. And get a Boa Viagem base: staying in the center during Carnival week is chaotic and hotel options there are limited. The 25-minute taxi ride from Boa Viagem to the action is worth it for a bed you can actually sleep in.
Budget travel in Recife: how to do it properly
You can stay in Recife for well under $70/night without suffering. Pousada da Várzea in the Várzea neighborhood is our budget pick at $45-70/night, about 8 km from Boa Viagem but close to the Instituto Ricardo Brennand and Oficina Francisco Brennand cultural sites. The metro connects Várzea-adjacent neighborhoods to the beach in under 30 minutes.
Budget doesn't mean staying somewhere sketchy. It means being strategic about neighborhood. Várzea is residential, quiet, and safe. The savings from staying there versus Boa Viagem can run R$100-200 per night, which pays for a lot of tapioca and taxi rides. Spend your money on experiences, not a beachfront premium you'll barely notice after day two.

You're also 4 km from the airport, which is genuinely convenient.
Price range here is wide, from $75/night at Hotel do Sol up to $420/night at the Sheraton. That spread means you're not boxed in. The southern end around Rua Engenheiro Domingos Ferreira is quieter and more residential. The northern end near Pina bleeds into a slightly grittier but more local vibe.
The main knock on Boa Viagem is that it can feel like a bubble. You'll need a taxi or metro to see Recife Antigo, Marco Zero, or the cultural institutions in Várzea. But for most visitors, that's a fine tradeoff for sleeping well and having the beach 5 minutes from your door.

Pina sits just north of Boa Viagem along Avenida Herculano Bandeira and has a different feel: less polished, more everyday Recife. The neighborhood is home to our Intercity Premium pick at $175-230/night. You're about 15 minutes walk from Boa Viagem beach from most of Pina, or a quick R$15-20 taxi ride. The area has real local restaurants around Rua Antônio Falcão and a less tourist-filtered atmosphere. It's not rougher, just more authentically Recife.
One thing to know: Pina is east-facing toward the Bacia do Pina lagoon on one side and has less beach access than Boa Viagem proper. But the hotel quality is there, and if you want to feel like you're somewhere real rather than a resort strip, Pina delivers.

Várzea is about 10 km west of Boa Viagem but it earns its place on the list. This is where Pousada da Várzea operates at $45-70/night, and it's also where you'll find the Instituto Ricardo Brennand and the Oficina Francisco Brennand within a short drive. If art and culture matter more to you than beach access, Várzea makes sense.
The neighborhood is genuinely residential and quiet. It's not a tourist zone, which is both its strength and its weakness. You won't find easy English-language menus on every corner, but you will find local bakeries on Estrada do Arraial and R$20 lunches that taste better than anything on the Boa Viagem tourist strip.
Getting to the beach from Várzea takes 25-35 minutes depending on traffic. Factor that in. But if you're visiting Recife for more than beach time, the budget savings are real and the cultural access is genuinely excellent.

We don't list any hotels here and that's intentional. Recife Antigo, the historic island district around Rua do Bom Jesus and Marco Zero, is fascinating to visit but a poor base. The few hotels that exist are overpriced relative to Boa Viagem options with the same rating, and the noise from bars and events carries late into the night.
The area empties out after midnight on non-event nights, which creates a different set of concerns. What looks lively at 9pm is deserted and poorly lit by 1am. It's not somewhere you want to navigate back to a hotel after a late dinner.
Go to Recife Antigo for the day. Walk Rua do Bom Jesus, hit the Paço do Frevo, eat lunch, and take a taxi back to Boa Viagem by evening. That's the right way to experience it. Sleep somewhere you'll actually rest.

Rainy Season (Apr-Jun)
June is peak rain month in Recife, with the Festa Junina festivals adding some local energy around the Parque da Jaqueira area in mid-June. Hotels in Boa Viagem drop to $65-130/night and you'll find last-minute deals even at the Sheraton. If rain doesn't bother you and you want quiet beaches and real local atmosphere, this window works.

This is our recommended window. Temperatures are comfortable at 24-27°C, rainfall drops significantly, and hotel rates settle at $75-160/night across most of Boa Viagem. The beach is quieter on weekdays and you get the full reef pool experience without fighting for space. Book 3-4 weeks ahead rather than months, which is a welcome change from peak season.
End of Year (Oct-Dec)
October and November are genuinely good months with warm weather, moderate crowds, and prices before the December holiday spike. From mid-December, Brazilian school holidays and Christmas push rates back up to $120-250/night across Boa Viagem. Recife's Carnival is one of the biggest in Brazil, drawing 2+ million people to the streets around Galo da Madrugada. Boa Viagem hotels hit $150-300/night during that week and the better ones sell out by November. If you're coming for Carnival specifically, treat hotel booking as ticket 1 in your trip planning, not an afterthought.
Use the metro for airport transfers
Guararapes Airport has a direct metro connection on Line 1. A ticket costs R$4.50 versus R$50-80 for a taxi to Boa Viagem. The ride takes about 15 minutes. The only reason to take a taxi is if you have multiple large bags or arrive after midnight when the metro stops running around 11:30pm.

The natural reef pools along Boa Viagem beach are only swimmable at low tide, typically about 2-3 hours either side of low water. At high tide you get rough surf and no pools. Avoid street money changers near Marco Zero
The Recife Antigo area around Rua do Bom Jesus has persistent unofficial currency exchange offers. Rates look tempting but the risk of counterfeit notes is real. Every Sunday morning, Avenida Boa Viagem closes to vehicle traffic until noon and becomes a promenade for cyclists, joggers, and families. It's genuinely enjoyable and a great way to see the full 7 km stretch of beachfront. But if you're arriving or departing on a Sunday morning, factor in an extra 15-20 minutes for taxis routing around the closures.
