Book in City Center, specifically within 5 minutes of pl. Tsentralen. That puts you 10 minutes walk from Kapana, 15 minutes from Old Town's base on ul. Saborna, and right on the main pedestrian strip of ul. Knyaz Aleksandar I.
Don't get seduced by Old Town photos alone. The location is beautiful, but the streets are uneven, taxis can't reach most guesthouses, and the day-trip crowds on ul. Artin Gidikov between 11am and 4pm are relentless. For a first visit, City Center hotels give you better access with far less friction.
Old Town hotels: what you actually get
Old Town sits on Trimontium hill above the city. Walking up from pl. Dzhumaya takes about 10 minutes and your legs will know about it. The payoff is real: narrow streets, National Revival architecture, and the Ancient Theatre right on your doorstep.
Two of our three Old Town picks are among the best in the whole list. Hotel Bochum (rated 9.3) and Boutique Hotel Hisar (rated 9.0) both deliver on the atmosphere promise. Hotel Evmolpia is the budget entry point at $65-90/night and punches above its price on the value side.
The Kapana district: Plovdiv's best-kept block
Kapana sits just west of ul. Rayko Daskalov, roughly 8 minutes walk from pl. Tsentralen. It's the city's creative quarter: independent coffee shops, craft beer bars, street art, and small galleries packed into about 6 blocks.
Hotel Explore is the only hotel we've vetted in the district itself, and it earns its 8.8 rating. The neighborhood is walkable to everything and significantly less crowded than Old Town. Evening in Kapana around ul. Neofit Rilski feels like a different city from the tour-bus Plovdiv.
How to get around Plovdiv without a car
Plovdiv's city center is genuinely walkable. Old Town to Kapana is 12 minutes on foot. City Center to the Ancient Theatre is about 15 minutes. The main pedestrian zone on ul. Knyaz Aleksandar I connects most of it.
For longer trips, trolleybuses and buses run frequently and cost 1.60 lev per ride. Taxis from reputable companies like OK Supertrans run 1.50-2.00 lev per km. App-based options are limited here, so save a taxi number at your hotel front desk. Don't hail random cabs near the bus station.
Plovdiv in peak season: what changes
July and August bring temperatures of 32-38°C and noticeably more tourists in Old Town. Prices jump 25-40% versus spring. The Plovdiv International Fair in late September (usually the last week) fills City Center hotels almost entirely with business travelers and prices spike accordingly.
Book City Center hotels like Ramada Trimontium or Hotel Leipzig at least 4 weeks out for any September travel. May is genuinely the best month: warm, uncrowded, and hotel prices are at or near their spring lows before summer kicks in.
Luxury in Plovdiv: worth the premium?
Plovdiv Grand Hotel at $310-480/night sits in City Center and is the city's flagship luxury address. Hotel Bochum in Old Town at $260-360/night actually outscores it on our ratings (9.3 vs 9.1). Both are genuinely world-class for a city this size.
The honest take: luxury in Plovdiv is exceptional value by Western European standards. A $350/night room here compares to a $700/night room in Prague or Vienna in terms of space, service, and quality. If you're considering it, don't hesitate.

Old Town is built across Trimontium hill above pl. Dzhumaya. The streets are narrow, the architecture is stunning National Revival style, and the Ancient Theatre on ul. Artin Gidikov is one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Eastern Europe. You're living inside a UNESCO-listed neighborhood.
The trade-off is logistics. No taxis to your door, cobblestones on every street, and the crowds between 10am and 5pm are thick. After 6pm, when the day-trippers clear out, Old Town becomes something else entirely. That's when staying here makes total sense.
