City Center: Serdika to NDK
The core of Sofia runs from the Serdika metro station (built right over 2nd-century Roman ruins you can see through glass floors) south along Vitosha Boulevard to the National Palace of Culture. This 1.2km pedestrian stretch has the city's best shops, restaurants, and people-watching.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral sits 800 meters east of Vitosha Boulevard. The interior is free to enter and the gold domes are Sofia's most photographed landmark. The crypt museum (6 лв entry) has the largest collection of Orthodox icons in the Balkans.
Stay here for first-time visits. Hotel Sveta Sofia on Pirotska Street is 200 meters from Serdika metro. Crystal Palace on Gurko Street is walking distance to everything. Budget 120 to 240 лв per night for this zone.
Vitosha Boulevard and South Park
Vitosha Boulevard is the spine of Sofia. Locals call it 'Vitoshka.' The pedestrian section runs from the Palace of Justice to NDK. Cafes line both sides. On warm evenings, half of Sofia seems to be walking here.
South Park (behind NDK) is Sofia's green lung. A 3km loop path, outdoor cafes, and direct views of Vitosha Mountain. The area around NDK has newer hotels including Sofia Hotel Balkan (170 to 240 лв) on the square itself.
The Monday antiques market at Alexander Nevsky Square (east end of the center) sells Soviet memorabilia, Orthodox icons, and vintage Bulgarian crafts. Prices are negotiable. Arrive by 9am for the best selection.
Getting Around: Metro, Trams, and Taxi Scams
Sofia's metro has 2 lines and covers the center well. Line 1 runs east-west through Serdika (the hub) to the airport. Line 2 runs north-south. A single ride is 1.60 лв. Buy a rechargeable card at any station.
Trams are older and slower but scenic. Tram 1 from the train station through the center is useful. Watch your pockets on crowded routes, especially 1 and 7 during rush hour.
Taxi scam is Sofia's main tourist complaint. NEVER hail a random taxi on the street. Use OK Supertrans (call or app) or Yellow Taxi. Legitimate rates are 0.79 лв per km daytime, 0.90 лв at night. Airport to center should cost 15 to 20 лв. If someone quotes 50 лв, walk away.
Day Trip: Boyana Church and Vitosha Mountain
Boyana Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the foothills of Vitosha, 8km from the center. The 13th-century frescoes predate the Italian Renaissance. Entry is 10 лв and visits are limited to 15-minute guided groups. Book online to skip the queue.
Combine Boyana with a Vitosha Mountain afternoon. Bus 66 from Hladilnika reaches the base in 40 minutes. The Boyana Waterfall trail takes 1.5 hours round trip. Cherni Vrah summit (2,290m) is a 3-hour hike from Aleko station.
In winter (December to March), Vitosha has ski runs. The lift pass costs 55 лв per day. Rentals are 40 лв. It's modest compared to Bansko (160km south) but you can ski in the morning and have dinner on Vitosha Boulevard by evening.
Where to Eat: A Local's Shortlist
Hadjidraganov's Houses on Kozloduy Street is the city's best traditional mehana (tavern). Try kavarma (slow-cooked pork) and shopska salad. Dinner for two with wine runs 50 to 70 лв. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Made in Home on Angel Kanchev Street does modern Bulgarian with seasonal menus. Lunch sets cost 12 to 16 лв. Dada Cultural Bar on Georgi Benkovski Street combines cocktails (8 to 12 лв) with live jazz and a 1920s basement vibe.
For cheap eats, Central Market Hall (Tsentralni Hali) near the mosque has Bulgarian pastries, banitsa (cheese pastry, 2 лв), and fresh produce. The food court on the upper floor has plates from 5 to 8 лв. Open daily except Sunday.
Lozenets: The Local Neighborhood
Lozenets is south of NDK and south of the center's tourist zone. This is where younger Sofia residents eat, drink, and live. The area around Arsenalski Boulevard and Cherni Vrah Boulevard has the city's densest concentration of wine bars and bistros.
Hotels here are slightly cheaper than dead center. Expect to walk 15 to 20 minutes to Vitosha Boulevard or take the metro 2 stops. The tradeoff is better restaurants, less tourist markup, and a feel for how Sofians actually live.
Try Sun Moon Bakery for morning pastries (3 to 5 лв). Apartment restaurants (private dining in converted apartments) are a Sofia specialty. Kinoteka near Bulgarian National Television does excellent wine pairings at 15 лв per glass.

Book Boyana Church online
Visits are limited to 15-minute guided groups. Walk-up queues can be 45 to 60 minutes in summer. Book a slot on their website for 10 лв per person. Bus 64 from Hladilnika terminal takes 25 minutes. Combine with a Vitosha Mountain afternoon.
Exchange money at banks, not hotels
Hotels offer terrible exchange rates (10% to 15% worse than market). Use ATMs from major banks (DSK, UniCredit, Postbank). Avoid standalone exchange offices on Vitosha Boulevard that advertise 'no commission.' They hide fees in the rate. 1 EUR = approximately 1.96 лв (fixed rate).

What areas should I avoid in Sofia?
Skip the area around the central train station (Tsentralna Gara) at night. It's not dangerous but it's dingy and has nothing for tourists. The Lyulin and Nadezhda residential blocks are far from anything interesting. And don't stay near the airport thinking it's convenient. It's 10km from the center with nothing around.
