Sea Sense Boutique Villa

Old Town: The Peninsula That Defines Sozopol
Sozopol's Old Town sits on a narrow rocky peninsula jutting into the Black Sea. Founded as Apollonia Pontica by Greek colonists in 610 BC, it's the oldest settlement on the Bulgarian coast. The wooden Revival-era houses from the 18th and 19th century lean over cobblestone lanes with sea views between every gap.
The Southern Fortress Wall dates to the 5th century and hosts the Apollonia Festival amphitheater. The Church of the Holy Mother of God houses what's claimed to be a relic of John the Baptist, discovered in 2010 on St. Ivan Island.
Old Town hotels are the most atmospheric and the most expensive. Sozopol Boutique Hotel and Hotel Art Gallery both charge 260 to 420 лв per night in summer. No cars allowed on the peninsula. Parking is at the isthmus lot (5 лв per day).
Harmanite (New Town): Beach and Convenience
Harmanite is the modern half of Sozopol, built south of the isthmus connecting to the Old Town. The main beach (Harmanite Beach) runs 600 meters along the coast with sunbed rentals at 10 to 15 лв. Most of Sozopol's hotels, restaurants, and the bus station are here.
Hotel Aphrodite, Hotel Sozopol, and Villa Vera are all in Harmanite within 200 meters of the beach. Prices run 30% to 40% cheaper than Old Town equivalents. The tradeoff: modern buildings instead of wooden houses, and more beach-resort atmosphere.
The fish market at the harbor (between Old and New Town) sells the day's catch from 8 to 14 лв per kg. Several restaurants will grill your purchase for 5 лв. Best seafood deal in town.
Beaches: Where to Swim and Where to Skip
Sozopol has 3 main beaches. Harmanite Beach is the town beach: 600 meters, lifeguards, sunbeds (15 лв), beach bars. Gets crowded by 11am in July and August. Central and convenient.
Kavatsite Beach is 1.5km of sand south of the Old Town, a 15-minute walk. Wider, less crowded, better for swimming. Free sections mixed with paid sunbed areas. The Bamboo bar does drinks and basic food.
The small cove beaches on the Old Town peninsula's west side are rocky but beautiful for photos. Not ideal for swimming. The city beach at the isthmus is tiny and packed. Skip it entirely.
Getting Around Sozopol
Sozopol is walkable. Old Town to Harmanite Beach takes 5 minutes. Old Town to Kavatsite takes 15 minutes on foot along the coastal path. You don't need a car within town.
Buses to Burgas (40 minutes, 6 лв) run hourly from the bus station in Harmanite. Taxis within Sozopol cost 3 to 5 лв. A taxi to Ropotamo Nature Reserve costs 15 лв.
Parking in summer is a nightmare. The isthmus lot charges 5 лв per day and fills by 10am in August. If driving from Burgas, arrive early or park at the town entrance and walk. Some hotels in Harmanite have private parking (ask when booking).
The Apollonia Festival: Art Takes Over
Every late August to early September, Sozopol transforms into Bulgaria's cultural capital. The Apollonia Arts Festival brings 10 days of theater, classical music, jazz, contemporary art, and film to the Old Town.
Performances happen in the ancient Southern Fortress amphitheater (extraordinary setting), church courtyards, and converted fishing warehouses. Tickets range from 10 to 30 лв. Evening shows at the fortress with the sea behind the stage are worth the trip alone.
Hotels book out fast during Apollonia. Reserve 2 months ahead minimum. Prices rise 20% to 30%. If you can't get accommodation in Sozopol, Burgas (40 minutes by bus) is a fallback.
Budget Guide: Sozopol Under 100 лв Per Day
It's possible. Family Hotel Kashtata charges 80 лв per night for a double. Hotel Orion runs 105 to 165 лв. Both have rooms with fridges. Shop at Billa supermarket in Harmanite for breakfast supplies (bread, cheese, yogurt for 5 лв total).
Lunch at the fish market: buy 500g of cleaned sprats for 5 лв and have them grilled at a harbor restaurant for another 5 лв. Dinner at a mehana costs 20 to 30 лв per person. A large beer is 4 лв at most bars.
Free activities: Old Town walking (all day), Harmanite Beach (bring your own towel), Kavatsite Beach (free sections), Southern Fortress wall views, harbor sunsets. The only entry fee worth paying is the Archaeological Museum at 6 лв.

Hotels here cost 30% to 50% more than Harmanite but the atmosphere is irreplaceable. Sozopol Boutique Hotel has sea-view rooms. Hotel Art Gallery combines contemporary art with traditional architecture. Both are 260+ лв in summer.

Most Sozopol hotels are here. The main beach is 100 to 200 meters from the hotel cluster. The bus station, Billa supermarket, and the bulk of restaurants line the main road. It's not pretty like the Old Town, but it works.

The area around Kavatsite Beach sits south of the Old Town, a 10 to 15-minute walk from center. The beach is 1.5km of sand, wider and less crowded than Harmanite. A few holiday complexes and apartment rentals dot the area.
Family Hotel Kashtata is the closest budget option. The Kavatsite area feels more resort-like and isolated. Great for beach purists who want sand time without town bustle. Limited restaurants; bring snacks or walk to Old Town for dinner.

The area along the main road into Sozopol from Burgas has some of the cheapest accommodation. Hotel Orion sits here. Rooms are simple and affordable at 60 to 165 лв.
The downside: you're 10 to 20 minutes' walk from either beach with no sidewalks on parts of the road. A car helps. The bus stops nearby on the Burgas route. Best for drivers who want to save and don't mind walking.

Black Sea Beaches
Harmanite Beach is the town's main 600-meter strip with sunbeds and bars. Kavatsite stretches 1.5km south with room to spread out. Water temperature hits 24C in August. Free sections available on both.
Ancient Apollonia
The Old Town peninsula was founded as a Greek colony in 610 BC. The Southern Fortress dates to the 5th century. The Archaeological Museum (6 лв) displays pottery from the original settlement. The Apollonia Festival fills these ruins with live art every September.
Old Town Evenings
Cobblestone lanes lit by wrought-iron lamps after dark. Sea views between wooden houses on the peninsula's edge. Dinner at Windmill restaurant with harbor lights below. Sozopol is Bulgaria's most romantic Black Sea town by a wide margin.
Safe Beach Town

Fresh from the Black Sea
The harbor fish market sells the morning catch from 8 лв per kg. Restaurants will grill your purchase for 5 лв. Tsatsa (fried sprats) is the local specialty at 8 to 12 лв. Windmill does grilled sea bass for 18 лв with a view of the harbor.

This is why people come. Water temperature 22 to 26C. Harmanite Beach fills by 11am in July. Kavatsite stays manageable. The Apollonia Festival hits in late August. Hotel rates peak mid-July to mid-August. Book 2 months ahead for Old Town properties.
Early Summer (Jun) / Late Summer (Sep)
June water is swimmable at 21C. September holds at 23C. Beaches have space. Hotel rates drop 30%. The Apollonia Festival (early September) adds cultural weight. Both months have warm evenings for Old Town strolls. Our top recommendation.
Spring (Mar-May)
Many hotels reopen in April or May. Water is too cold for swimming (14 to 18C). The Old Town is atmospheric and empty. Great for photography, walking, and cheap dining. Restaurants that stay open year-round offer their best service when they're not swamped.
Fall/Winter (Oct-Feb)
Most hotels and restaurants close from November to March. October still has mild weather (15C) and the Old Town to yourself. A handful of guesthouses stay open year-round. Sozopol in winter is hauntingly beautiful but logistically challenging. Not for everyone.

Book Old Town 2 months ahead for summer
The Old Town has maybe 10 hotels total on the peninsula. Sozopol Boutique Hotel and Hotel Art Gallery book out by May for July and August. Harmanite hotels have more availability but still fill up. September around Apollonia Festival needs even earlier booking.
Arrive by bus from Burgas, not Sofia
The Sofia to Sozopol bus takes 6 to 7 hours. Fly into Burgas Airport (BOJ) instead, then take the 40-minute bus (6 лв) or taxi (60 лв). In summer, Burgas has direct flights from most European cities. Wizz Air, Ryanair, and charter airlines all serve BOJ.
Bring cash for the fish market
The harbor fish market and most small restaurants are cash-only. ATMs exist in Harmanite (Billa supermarket area) but charge 3 to 5 лв per withdrawal for foreign cards. Bring enough BGN for 2 to 3 days. Hotels accept cards. Beach sunbed rental is cash.
Walk to Kavatsite via the coastal path
The path from the Old Town to Kavatsite Beach runs along the coast with views of St. Ivan Island. Takes 15 minutes. More scenic than the inland road. Wear proper shoes (uneven rocks in places). In summer, a tourist train also runs this route for 3 лв.
Don't drive into the Old Town
Cars are banned on the Old Town peninsula. Parking at the isthmus lot costs 5 лв per day and fills by 10am in August. If you're staying in the Old Town, drop luggage at the hotel entrance, then park. Some Harmanite hotels have private parking. Ask when booking.
Pack for wind on the peninsula
The Old Town peninsula catches sea breeze from both sides. Even when Harmanite is calm and hot, the peninsula can be breezy. Bring a light jacket for evening walks on the fortress wall. September evenings drop to 18C after sunset.

Is Sozopol better than Nesebar?
Different vibes. Sozopol is more relaxed, more local, and less overrun by tourist shops. Nesebar's UNESCO Old Town is more impressive architecturally but feels like a souvenir market in summer. Sozopol has better beaches (Kavatsite, Harmanite). Nesebar has better day-trip infrastructure. We prefer Sozopol for stays of 3+ days.
When is the best time to visit Sozopol?
Early June or September. Water temperature hits 22 to 24C, beaches aren't packed, and hotel rates run 30% below July peak. The Apollonia Arts Festival (late August to early September) brings theater, music, and exhibitions to the Old Town. Skip July 15 to August 15 if you dislike crowds.
What areas should I avoid in Sozopol?
Don't book the very cheapest rooms on Ropotamo Road south of town. It's a 20-minute walk to either beach with no sidewalks. The area between the bus station and the fish market can be noisy until late. And avoid the beach clubs on Harmanite if you want a quiet beach experience. They blast music from noon to sunset.
What is Kavatsite Beach like?
Kavatsite is a 1.5km stretch of sand south of the Old Town, about a 15-minute walk from the center. Wider and less crowded than Harmanite. Bulgaria's premier arts festival runs for 10 days in late August to early September. Theater, live music, film screenings, and art exhibitions take over the Old Town. Can I day-trip from Sozopol?
Ropotamo Nature Reserve is 12km south with boat tours (15 лв, 40 minutes) through a river estuary with pelicans and water lilies. Nesebar (45 minutes by bus, 6 лв) has UNESCO architecture. Burgas (40 minutes) has the Sea Garden promenade and airport connections. Saint Ivan Island (visible from the Old Town) had a monastery; boats run in summer for 20 лв round trip.
