City Center: Culture Meets Coast
Varna's center clusters around the Cathedral of the Assumption and Knyaz Boris I Boulevard, the main pedestrian shopping street. The Archaeological Museum (home of the world's oldest gold) is 5 minutes east. The Roman Thermae ruins are 10 minutes south.
From the cathedral, the Sea Garden is a 10-minute walk east. The garden's terraced paths lead down to the beach. This setup means you can do museums in the morning, beach in the afternoon, and dinner on the boulevard. Everything within a 20-minute walking radius.
Hotel Odesos and Hotel Cherno More are both in this zone. Expect 175 to 290 лв per night. The area has the city's best restaurant concentration and nightlife on Slivnitsa Boulevard.
The Sea Garden: Varna's Living Room
Primorski Park (the Sea Garden) runs 8km along the coast. It's not just a park. It's where Varna's public life happens. The upper terrace has cafes, a small zoo (4 лв, worth it for kids), and the Naval Museum. The lower level reaches the beach.
The open-air theater in the Sea Garden hosts the Varna Summer Festival (June to August) with opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts. Some events are free. The dolphinarium (20 лв) is a 15-minute walk north through the park.
Hotels along the Sea Garden (Hotel Cherno More, Boutique Hotel Varna Hills) charge a premium for the location but it's justified. Sunset walks through the park to a beachside restaurant is the quintessential Varna evening.
Golden Sands: The Resort Question
Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) is a purpose-built resort complex 18km north of Varna. It has wider beaches (3.5km), waterslide parks, and dozens of all-inclusive hotels. It's a different experience from Varna city entirely.
Melia Grand Hermitage sits at the southern edge at 550 to 930 лв per night. Riviera Holiday Club is nearby at 460 to 680 лв. Both offer resort amenities (pools, spa, buffet restaurants) that city hotels can't match.
The tradeoff: Golden Sands is a tourist bubble. Restaurants charge double the city prices. Drinks are 8 to 12 лв instead of 4 to 5 лв. The beach is gorgeous but sunbed rental costs 20 лв per day. Bus 409 to Varna takes 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Getting Around: Bus, Taxi, and the Golden Sands Route
Within the city center, walk. Everything fits in a 20-minute radius. For the beach from inland hotels, the Sea Garden paths lead down in 5 to 10 minutes.
Bus 409 is the key route: Airport to City Center to Golden Sands. Runs every 15 to 20 minutes in summer. A single ride is 2 лв. A 24-hour pass costs 5 лв and covers all city buses. Buy tickets at kiosks or from the driver (exact change).
Taxis within the center cost 3 to 6 лв. To Golden Sands, expect 20 to 25 лв. Use the Taxime app or OK Supertrans. Never accept rides from drivers who approach you at the airport or train station.
Day Trips from Varna
Aladzha Monastery is a medieval rock-cut monastery 18km from Varna, carved into a cliff face. Entry 5 лв. Combine with a Golden Sands beach afternoon. Take bus 409 and walk 1km from the resort.
Balchik (45 minutes north by bus, 7 лв) has the Botanical Garden and Palace of Romanian Queen Marie. The garden has 3,000 species including a famous cactus collection. Entry 12 лв. Stop at the harbor for fish lunch at 10 to 15 лв per plate.
Stone Forest (Pobiti Kamani) is 18km west. Natural stone columns standing in a desert-like landscape. Free entry. No public transport; taxi costs 25 лв round trip. UNESCO tentative list. Unique in Europe. Allow 1 hour.
Where to Eat in Varna
Godzila near the port is the locals' fish restaurant. Fresh catch displayed on ice, grilled to order. Sea bass or bluefish at 14 to 18 лв per plate. No-frills decor, excellent food. Cash only. Open for lunch and dinner.
Musala Gastro Bar on Musala Street does modern Bulgarian cuisine with seasonal menus. Lamb with yogurt sauce at 22 лв. Wine list focuses on Bulgarian varietals (Mavrud, Rubin) from 6 лв per glass. Reserve for weekend dinners.
