Walking Gurko Street: the heart of Old Town
General Gurko Street runs along the cliff edge above the Yantra River, and every second building is either a cafe, a gallery, or a family-run hotel. Start at the eastern end near the Stambolov Bridge and walk west toward Tsarevets.
The best views are from the terraces of the restaurants on the south side. Grab a table at Shtastliveca or the Yantra Grand Hotel terrace. A coffee with a fortress view costs лв3-5.
The street gets crowded between 11am and 2pm in summer. Walk it early morning or after 6pm when the light hits the fortress walls and most tour groups have left.
Tsarevets Fortress: skip the crowds
The fortress opens at 8am April through October. Get there at opening and you'll have the Patriarch's Complex almost to yourself. Entry is лв6 for adults. The climb to the top takes 15 minutes at a normal pace.
Most guided tour groups arrive between 10am and 1pm via the main gate. The views from Baldwin's Tower at the highest point are worth the extra stairs. Bring water because there's nothing sold inside the fortress walls.
The Execution Rock on the north side is the most dramatic viewpoint in town. It's a 3-minute detour from the main path and most visitors miss it entirely.
Arbanasi village: monastery gardens and quiet nights
Arbanasi sits on a plateau 4km north of Veliko Tarnovo. The Nativity of Christ Church has 17th-century frescoes that rival anything in Rila Monastery. Entry лв6, and you'll often be the only visitor.
The village has maybe 15 guesthouses and 8 restaurants. Sevastokrator Hotel is the standout, with a pool overlooking the valley. Room rates run лв150-320/night, which buys genuine peace.
A taxi from Veliko Tarnovo center costs лв8-10. The last reliable taxi back is around 10pm. If you're staying in Arbanasi, stock up on supplies. The village shop closes at 7pm.
Asenov Quarter: the riverside neighborhood nobody mentions
Below the fortress, the Asenov Quarter lines the Yantra riverbanks. It's where the locals actually live. The Church of the 40 Martyrs (лв6 entry) has medieval inscriptions and a quiet courtyard.
Hotels here are the cheapest in town. Expect лв45-80/night for basic but clean rooms. The walk up to Tsarevets takes 10 minutes and the stairs are steep, so it's not ideal if you have mobility issues.
The restaurants along the river serve grilled trout from the Yantra for лв10-14. Mehana Hadji Nikoli on the main road is the one locals prefer. Skip the first two places at the bridge, which cater to the tour bus crowd.
Day trip to Tryavna: Bulgaria's woodcarving capital
Tryavna is 35km south, reachable by bus in 45 minutes (лв5 from the main station). The Daskalov House on the main square has rival woodcarved ceilings created by competing craftsmen in the 1800s. It's possibly the most impressive domestic interior in Bulgaria.
The old clock tower square is compact and walkable in 30 minutes. Several workshops sell hand-carved icons and decorative panels starting at лв20. The Tryavna School of Art maintains a tradition going back 300 years.
Combine this with a stop at Dryanovo Monastery (15 minutes off the main road). The monastery has a cave with stalactites and a small church carved into rock. Budget 4-5 hours total for both stops.
Where to eat: beyond the tourist menus
The tourist restaurants along Gurko Street serve decent food at лв12-25 per main. But the best meals are slightly off the main drag. Ego Pizza near the art gallery does wood-fired pizza that rivals anything in Sofia (лв8-14).
For traditional Bulgarian food, Mehana Gurko at number 33 has been doing shopska salads and kavarma stews since the 1990s. Portions are huge. Two people eat well for лв30-40 including a bottle of Mavrud wine.
Breakfast is often included with hotels, but if not, the bakeries along Independance Street sell banitsa (cheese pastry) for лв2.50. Paired with a лв1 ayran from the corner shop, that's the best лв3.50 breakfast in Bulgaria.

Varosha is the obvious pick for first-timers. The pedestrianized streets wind past Revival-era houses, and every other building is a cafe or guesthouse. Gurko Street is the main artery, running along the cliff edge with river views.
Hotels range from converted merchant houses (лв100-180/night) to the Yantra Grand Hotel at the top end. The location premium is real but justified. You can walk to the fortress, the craft street, and 20 restaurants without touching a car.
Noise from the restaurants fades by 11pm. Light sleepers should request rooms facing the river side, not the street side.
