Sal Rei: where to actually stay in town
Sal Rei is the only place on Boa Vista that functions like a real town. The central Praça de Santa Isabel has cafes open by 7 am, a weekly market on Saturdays, and enough restaurants on Rua de Boa Esperança to eat well for a week without repeating. It's not glamorous, but it works.
Hotels here are cheaper by 30-40% compared to the Praia de Chaves resorts. The trade-off is a 7 km trip to the best beach. But the Sal Rei waterfront has its own charm, especially at sunset looking out toward Ilhéu de Sal Rei. And you'll eat better, drink cheaper, and actually meet local people.
Praia de Chaves: resort strip or paradise?
Praia de Chaves is 10 km of near-perfect white sand beach on the northwest coast. The water is flat and turquoise in the morning. By early afternoon the trade winds kick in and the kite surfers come out. It's genuinely one of the best beaches in the Atlantic.
But it's almost entirely resort territory. Outside Iberostar, Riu Karamboa, and Estoril Hotel, there's very little. No independent restaurants, no corner shops, no evening life beyond the hotel bars. If all-inclusive is your plan, this is the right base. If you want to explore, budget $20-30/day for taxis into Sal Rei.
Murdeira Bay: the quiet alternative
Murdeira village is 8 km south of Sal Rei, tucked into a sheltered bay that the wind barely touches. The bay itself is calm enough for kayaking and snorkelling most of the year. There's one main hotel here and almost nothing else.
That's the point. Hotel Murdeira Village has 18 villas around the bay with direct water access. If you're after complete quiet and don't mind a 15-minute taxi ride to anything, Murdeira is worth it. We've seen couples come here expecting a week of isolation and leave having booked the same trip for next year.
The east coast: spectacular but know what you're getting into
João Galego and the northeast coast face straight into the Atlantic. The beaches. Praia de Ervatão especially. are raw and wild. No umbrellas, no vendors, no facilities. Loggerhead turtles nest on Praia de Ervatão between June and October, which is genuinely extraordinary to see.
Hotel Morabeza Boa Vista sits at João Galego, about 25 km from Sal Rei by road. You need a car or regular taxi budget to make it work. The reward is some of the emptiest, most dramatic coastline on the island. Just don't try swimming at unguarded beaches here. the currents are serious.
Rabil: the forgotten village worth knowing
Rabil is 4 km east of Sal Rei on the road toward the airport. It's a working village with a 17th-century church, the old colonial-era salt pans, and almost no tourists. Casa Cafrina here is a genuinely good guesthouse for $65-95/night. The owner cooks dinner on request.
It's a 20-minute walk to the centre of Sal Rei, or a 5-minute aluguer ride for about $1. Most people fly straight past Rabil on the airport road without ever stopping. That's their loss. The salt flats at golden hour are one of the best free things on the island.
Viana Desert and the interior: what to know
The Viana Desert covers the central part of the island with proper Saharan-style dunes. It's not a hotel zone, but it affects where you stay. Dust from the interior. especially January through March. can blow through poorly sealed guesthouses in Sal Rei's older streets.
Book hotels with enclosed courtyards or rooms that face west, away from the prevailing sand direction. The desert is best visited by 4x4 from Sal Rei. tours leave from the central praça area most mornings for around $45-65 per person. Don't attempt it in a standard rental car.

Sal Rei is where Boa Vista actually lives. The Praça de Santa Isabel is the social heart, with cafes, the town hall, and fishermen selling the morning catch nearby. Rua de Boa Esperança has the best independent restaurants on the island. None of this exists at the beach resorts.
Hotels here cost 30-40% less than Praia de Chaves. You're 5 minutes from the waterfront, 10 minutes from the airport by taxi, and connected to everywhere else by the island's aluguer network. The beach at Praia da Cabral is a 15-minute walk. small but fine for a morning swim.
The downside is honest: the big beaches are a taxi ride away. And some streets behind the old market get noisy early morning. Ask for a rear-facing room if you're a light sleeper.

Praia de Chaves is the reason most people book Boa Vista. The beach is 10 km long, wide, and almost devoid of development beyond the hotels themselves. Estoril Hotel, Riu Karamboa, and Iberostar Club Boa Vista all sit here. The water is calm until midday, then the wind takes over.
This is resort territory, full stop. It works brilliantly if you're happy staying all-inclusive or semi-board. The Iberostar is genuinely excellent. the highest-rated hotel on our list at 8.7. Riu Karamboa is the family choice, with a kids' club and shallow beach entry. Villas Boa Vista Club offers private villa accommodation at the top end.
Plan on spending $20-30/day on taxis if you want to reach Sal Rei for dinner. Some guests never bother, and honestly the resort restaurants are decent enough. But you're paying resort prices for everything on-site. a beer runs $5-7 at most hotel bars here.

Murdeira sits 8 km south of Sal Rei on the protected west coast. The bay barely sees wind and the water stays calm enough for snorkelling year-round. There's a small village nearby and essentially nothing else. which is exactly the appeal.
Hotel Murdeira Village is the only vetted property here. It's 18 villas spread around the bay with a restaurant, pool, and direct beach access. Rated 8.5 and priced at $140-200/night, it punches well above that price bracket. We'd put it up against properties charging twice as much elsewhere on the island.
The isolation has a practical cost. A taxi to Sal Rei runs about $15-18 each way. There's no evening walk to a bar, no corner shop. If that sounds like a problem, Murdeira probably isn't for you. If it sounds like a feature, you've found your hotel.
