Most first-timers make the same mistake: booking downtown near the cruise terminal on Harbour Drive because it looks central on a map. It is central, but you're sharing streets with thousands of day-trippers from the ships and the beach is a taxi ride away. Seven Mile Beach on West Bay Road is where you actually want to be.
The sweet spot for first visits is the mid-section of Seven Mile Beach, near the Comfort Suites or Hampton Inn. You're 5 minutes walk to the sand, restaurants like Calico Jack's are nearby, and taxis to George Town Central cost about $15. Nail the location and everything else falls into place.
George Town on a budget: what's actually possible.
Grand Cayman is not a cheap island. Full stop. But budget travel is doable if you're strategic. Eldemire's Guest House in George Town Central sits at $55-85/night and is clean, honest, and family-run. It's not glamorous, but it's real value on an island where most hotels start at $150.
The budget hack most people miss: stay at Seaview Hotel on the Waterfront for $79-110/night, rent a scooter for about $40/day, and ride up West Bay Road to Seven Mile Beach every morning. You'll spend a fraction of what Seven Mile Beach hotel guests pay and still get the same sand and water.
Luxury in George Town: when it's actually worth it.
The Ritz-Carlton on Seven Mile Beach doesn't need defending. At $600-1,200/night you're getting Grand Cayman's best service, a genuine beach-club setup, and access to the Greg Norman-designed golf course at Blue Tip. The Westin at $400-700/night is the slightly more approachable luxury play without sacrificing the beach position.
One thing worth knowing: both the Ritz and Westin sit on the northern stretch of Seven Mile Beach, where the sand is at its widest and least crowded. That's not an accident. If you're going to spend serious money, the northern end of West Bay Road is where you spend it.
Diving trips: where to base yourself.
Grand Cayman has some of the world's best wall diving, and your hotel choice changes the experience significantly. Cobalt Coast Resort in West Bay is the dedicated diving base, sitting next to the Cobalt Coast dive site and offering packages from $190/night. Eden Rock on South Church Street in George Town is excellent for shore diving if you're staying downtown.
The East End resorts, Wyndham Reef and Morritt's Tortuga, sit close to the East End dive sites including the famous Babylon pinnacles. They're 40 minutes from the main action on Frank Sound Road, but if serious diving is the whole point of the trip, being out there makes sense.
Family trips: the honest breakdown.
Families do well in George Town. The water on Seven Mile Beach is calm, warm at 27-29°C most of the year, and shallow for a good distance out. Comfort Suites Seven Mile Beach has suite-style rooms that actually fit a family of four without feeling like a sardine tin, and it's on South Church Street close to the beach's calmer southern end.
Avoid booking anywhere near the cruise terminal for a family trip. On port days, North Church Street and Harbour Drive get genuinely overwhelming. The northern end of Seven Mile Beach near the Westin and Ritz stays calm because it's far enough from that chaos. Kids love the Cayman Turtle Centre in West Bay too, about 15 minutes from the beach strip.
