Alto Atacama in Catarpe Valley splits the difference. It's $200-320/night without the all-inclusive structure, but the canyon setting near the Catarpe ruins is genuinely stunning. Stargazing from your hotel: what to look for
The Atacama has the clearest skies on Earth. That's not marketing. The ALMA Observatory operates 5,000m above sea level in the altiplano precisely because of zero light pollution and minimal humidity. From San Pedro itself, even modest hotels in Ayllu de Yaye have unobstructed southern sky views once you walk 100m from the main road. Alto Atacama runs dedicated nighttime programs from Catarpe Valley, and the elevation there (2,600m) adds to the experience.
One concrete tip: book hotels on the eastern fringe of San Pedro toward Calle Domingo Atienza or Ayllu de Larache if stargazing matters to you. Getting from Calama Airport to your hotel
Calama's El Loa Airport (CJC) is your entry point. It sits 100km and about 90 minutes from San Pedro de Atacama by road. Neighborhoods to avoid. and why
The stretch of Calle Tocopilla closest to the main bus terminal is noisy until 11pm and sells the worst value rooms in San Pedro. Hostels there charge $50-70/night for rooms that face the road. You're paying for convenience you don't actually need, since every part of San Pedro is within 15 minutes walk.
In Calama, avoid anything labeled 'near the market' on Avenida Balmaceda. It's not dangerous, it's just grim and there's no reason to stay there unless your 6am flight is tomorrow morning. And skip any property advertising 'volcano views' that sits inside the Calle Caracoles tourist strip. The views are real. The walls are thin, the prices are inflated, and you'll hear tour group wake-up calls at 3:30am.

San Pedro de Atacama is where most visitors base themselves, and for good reason. Tour pickups, restaurants, gear rental, and the Iglesia San Pedro all sit within a 10-minute walk of each other. But the town center itself is loud and tourist-dense. the real value is in the outlying ayllus (traditional neighborhoods) like Ayllu de Larache and Ayllu de Yaye.
Ayllu de Larache sits northeast of the plaza and hosts Hotel Altiplanico and Explora Atacama. Both have unobstructed Licancabur volcano views and enough distance from Calle Caracoles to actually feel remote. Ayllu de Yaye runs southeast and is where Tierra Atacama and Hotel La Aldea de la Sal sit, quieter still and with direct access to the Salar de Atacama road.
Hotel prices here range from $45/night at Hostal Sonchek on the central streets to $1,400/night at Explora. The mid-range sweet spot is Sector Checar, where Hotel Cumbres sits at $150-220/night with a pool and consistent service. Catarpe Valley sits just 8km north of San Pedro de Atacama along the Río San Pedro canyon. The ruins of Pukará de Catarpe. a pre-Inca fortress. overlook the valley floor. Toconao sits on the eastern edge of the Salar de Atacama, 37km south of San Pedro de Atacama. The village is known for its white liparita stone church, the Campanario de San Lucas, and the Quebrada de Jerez oasis just 1km from the village center. It feels nothing like San Pedro.
Hostal Puritama on the village square is the one vetted property here. At $60-90/night, it's genuinely good value considering the atmosphere and the proximity to Salar de Atacama flamingo lagoons. The lagoons at Chaxa are about 18km west. You'll need your own transport or a tour pickup.
Be aware: Toconao has one small restaurant strip and limited nightlife. The appeal is complete quiet and proximity to southern Atacama sites like Laguna Miscanti (80km south) and Piedras Rojas. If you want convenience, stay in San Pedro. If you want the Atacama without the tourist circus, Toconao delivers.

Calama is 100km from San Pedro de Atacama and exists primarily as the gateway city via El Loa Airport. It's a working copper-mining town, and most visitors spend as little time here as possible. But flights in and out of CJC make an overnight stay occasionally unavoidable.

It handles corporate travelers well. reliable Wi-Fi, proper breakfasts, easy taxi access to the airport (15 minutes, about $8-12). Nothing about Calama is charming. Don't extend your Calama stay on purpose. The Chuquicamata open-pit copper mine is technically one of the largest in the world and worth a quick tour if you have time between flights, but it's not a reason to add a night. Take the transfer bus to San Pedro as soon as you land.
