The Waterfront strip above Caleta Hanga Roa is where you want to be for sunsets. Walk 5 minutes north along the cliff path and you hit Ahu Tahai, one of the most photographed moai sites on the island, lit up orange every evening.
Hotel Taha Tai sits right in this strip and earns the Romantic Stay badge for good reason. Book a room on the upper floors and you're watching the Pacific from bed. Dinner at Tataku Vave, 3 minutes walk along the waterfront, is the move: fresh tuna, local pisco, no tourist pricing.
Sector Costa: the quiet side that delivers
Sector Costa runs along Avenida Policarpo Toro and the coastal road south of the harbour. It's less foot traffic than the town center, better gardens, and the two strongest hotels in our guide sit here: Tupa Hotel and Hotel Altiplanico Rapa Nui.
Hotel Altiplanico is built into the hillside with individual stone bungalows facing the ocean. It's 15 minutes walk from the centre of Hanga Roa and you'll want a bike or scooter. That's actually the point: you come back here to decompress, not to be in the middle of things.
Budget travel on Easter Island: what's actually possible
Easter Island on a budget is doable but you need to be realistic. Hostal Taura'a in the town center is the best honest budget option at $55-85/night, central to Avenida Atamu Tekena, and 12 minutes walk from Ahu Tahai. Cabañas Christophe near Caleta Hanga Roa adds a bit more comfort for $75-99/night.
Eat at the local market on Avenida Te Pito o te Henua for lunch, $6-10 per plate. Rent a scooter for $35-50/day instead of taking taxis everywhere. You can see Rano Raraku, Ahu Tongariki, and Anakena in one day on two wheels and keep total daily spend under $120.
Eco lodges: the Northern Coast Road is worth the distance
Pikera Uri sits on the Northern Coast Road above the cliffs, about 4 km from central Hanga Roa. It's genuinely remote by island standards. The lodge has only a handful of bungalows, no crowds, and the kind of darkness at night that reminds you why people come here.
At $260-360/night it's real money, but that includes breakfast and the kind of personalized service you don't get anywhere near Avenida Atamu Tekena. Hangaroa Eco Village on the Ahu Tahai Coast is a step down in price and a step up in family-friendliness, with organized guided hikes and a proper spa.
Tapati Rapa Nui: book early or pay double
Tapati Rapa Nui is a two-week cultural festival that runs late January into early February. The whole island goes into it: canoe races off Caleta Hanga Roa, body painting competitions, traditional music on the main stage near the town center. It's spectacular and the single best time to visit culturally.
Hotel prices jump 40-60% across the board. A room at Hare Noi on Avenida Atamu Tekena that costs $120/night in April will hit $180-200 during Tapati. Book 5-6 months out minimum. And if you're going for Tapati, budget an extra $30-50/day for food and event entry.
Explora Rapa Nui: when the price is the point
Explora sits on the Southern Coast at Vaihu, away from everything else on the island. The rate of $890-1,400/night is all-inclusive: every guided excursion, all meals, open bar, transfers from Mataveri Airport. You're not paying for a room, you're paying for a fully curated trip.
We've seen people book cheaper hotels thinking they'll explore independently and end up spending $200-300/day on tours, taxis, and meals anyway. The math closes faster than you'd think. If you're coming for 4 nights and archaeology is the whole point, Explora is worth the honest conversation with your wallet.

Hanga Roa is Easter Island's single urban area and Avenida Atamu Tekena is its main street. Everything is here: restaurants, tour agencies, the Museo Antropológico Sebastián Englert, and the harbour at Caleta Hanga Roa just 8 minutes on foot.
Hostal Taura'a and Hare Noi Hotel both sit in or near this core. You won't need a vehicle for most of your day from here, which saves real money. The trade-off is noise and foot traffic. it's a small town but it gets busy during peak season.
Avoid rooms that face the street directly at budget guesthouses. Avenida Atamu Tekena gets generators and early morning delivery trucks. Ask for a garden-facing room and you'll sleep better.

The Waterfront zone runs along the western cliff above Caleta Hanga Roa and north toward Ahu Tahai. Hotel Taha Tai and Cabañas Christophe are both here, one above the other in terms of price and polish. Ahu Tahai is a 5-10 minute walk north.
This is the most atmospheric part of Hanga Roa at dusk. The moai silhouettes against the sunset on a clear evening are the image people come here for. You're also 8 minutes walk from the main restaurant cluster on Avenida Policarpo Toro.
