How to choose between Centro and Sector Ayllu
Centro puts you on Calle Caracoles in under 5 minutes. Restaurants, tour operators, the Iglesia San Pedro, everything is walkable. But Centro is also the loudest part of town, and some streets near the plaza stay busy until midnight in peak season.
Sector Ayllu trades convenience for atmosphere. You're looking at 10-15 minutes walk to Calle Caracoles, but your hotel will likely have actual desert views and real quiet. If you're here for the landscape, not the nightlife, Ayllu wins every time.
What 'all-inclusive' actually means here
At Explora Atacama and Tierra Atacama, all-inclusive means everything: meals cooked with local quinoa and altiplano produce, guided excursions to El Tatio and Salar de Atacama, and airport transfers from Calama. The $420-700/night rate includes all of that. Run the numbers before assuming it's overpriced.
At mid-range hotels like Hotel Altiplanico or Lodge Atacama, 'breakfast included' means breakfast and nothing else. Budget at least $30-50/day extra for meals on Calle Caracoles, where a decent dinner at a sit-down restaurant runs $15-25 per person.
The truth about 'desert views' in hotel listings
Every hotel in San Pedro claims a desert view. In Centro, that often means a view of the adobe wall next door and a sliver of sky. Real desert views come from elevated positions in Quebrada del Diablo or the outskirts of Sector Ayllu, where you can see the Licancabur volcano from your pillow.
Ask specifically: 'Can I see Licancabur from the room?' Or check whether the hotel is within 2km of the town core. If yes, temper expectations. The views from Nayara Alto Atacama or Tierra Atacama are the real thing, and that's a big part of what you're paying for.
Stargazing and why your hotel location matters more than you think
San Pedro sits at 2,400 meters with some of the clearest skies on earth. But light pollution from Calle Caracoles and the town plaza washes out the view if you're in Centro. Hotels in Quebrada del Diablo and Ayllu de Larache are 3-5km from the center and make a real difference.

July and August are the busiest months. Chilean winter holidays bring domestic tourists, and international visitors peak at the same time for clear skies. Luxury lodges in Quebrada del Diablo sell out by April for those months. Mid-range hotels in Centro hold availability longer but prices rise 25-40%.
March, April, and May are genuinely underrated. The altiplano wildflowers are out, temperatures are stable at 15-20°C during the day, and hotels across all price points are 20-30% cheaper. That's when we'd go.

Prices here range from $45/night at the budget end up to $190/night for the best mid-range rooms. Skip anything directly on Avenida Licancabur near the bus terminal. The street noise alone will ruin an early-morning El Tatio excursion.
