Futian CBD: the business center with surprising depth
Futian is where Shenzhen works. The Ping An Finance Centre (599m) dominates the skyline. Convention Center station sits at the intersection of Lines 1 and 4, making it the best-connected spot in the city. Lianhua Mountain Park is a 10-minute walk north for city views.
But Futian has more than offices. The Shenzhen Book Centre on Fuzhong Road is Asia's largest bookstore. Coco Park mall has a rooftop beer garden. And the restaurants on Mintian Road do the city's best Cantonese dim sum. Hotels cluster around Convention Center station at ¥500-2,000/night.
Nanshan: tech campus meets art district
Nanshan is where Tencent, DJI, and hundreds of startups are headquartered. But the visitor-friendly side is OCT-Loft Creative Culture Park and Sea World plaza in Shekou. OCT-Loft has galleries that rotate monthly, design shops, and the best craft coffee scene in the city.
Shekou sits on the coast with the ferry terminal to Hong Kong. Sea World plaza (built around a grounded cruise ship) has 40+ restaurants and bars. The expat community here gives Nanshan an international feel that other districts lack. Hotels run ¥400-1,500/night.
Huaqiangbei: the world's electronics playground
Huaqiangbei is several city blocks of multi-story electronics markets in Futian. SEG Plaza, Huaqiang Electronics World, and Mingtong Digital City are the main buildings. Ground floors sell consumer electronics. Upper floors sell components, drones, LED strips, and things you did not know existed.
Go with a purpose or you will be overwhelmed. Drone enthusiasts head to SEG floors 3-5. Phone accessories fill Mingtong. Budget 3-4 hours. Bargain everything: first price is 2-3x the final price. Metro: Huaqiang Road station (Line 1).
Luohu: the border district that started it all
Luohu was Shenzhen's original commercial center when the Special Economic Zone launched in 1980. Dongmen pedestrian street is the oldest shopping area: 10 blocks of clothing, electronics, and food stalls. Prices are rock-bottom.
The Luohu Commercial City next to the border checkpoint is a famous bargaining market for tailored suits (¥800-2,000), fake goods (we do not recommend), and massages (¥80/hour). Hotels are the cheapest in Shenzhen at ¥200-500/night. The tradeoff: the area feels dated compared to Futian and Nanshan.
Shenzhen Bay: the waterfront that surprises everyone
Shenzhen Bay Park runs 15km along the coast between Nanshan and the Hong Kong border bridge. It is free, well-maintained, and genuinely beautiful. Rent a bike (¥10/hour) or walk the mangrove boardwalk section near the Shenzhen Bay Bridge.
The park fills with joggers and families on weekends. Sunset views of Hong Kong's New Territories across the bay are remarkable. The Shenzhen Talent Park at the eastern end has a small amphitheater for free evening concerts in summer. Metro: Shenzhen Bay Park station (Line 9).
Day trip to Dapeng Fortress
Dapeng Fortress sits 90 minutes east of central Shenzhen by bus E11 (¥20 from Yinhu Bus Station). The 600-year-old walled town is one of the few historical sites in a city with almost no history. Ming-dynasty walls, narrow lanes, and almost zero tourists on weekdays.
The nearby beaches (Jiaochangwei, Xichong) are Shenzhen's best: clear water, actual sand, and far from the city crowds. Jiaochangwei has guesthouses from ¥200/night and seafood restaurants on the waterfront. Combine the fortress and a beach for a full day.

The area is showing its age. Buildings are older, streets are busier, and the vibe is more chaotic than polished. But the Hong Kong border crossing is right here, and the metro connects you to Futian in 15 minutes.

The area is developing fast but currently requires 45 minutes to reach Futian by metro. Stay here only if you have an early flight or business in western Shenzhen.

March and April are pleasant but increasingly humid. Rain picks up in late April. May is the start of the wet season. Canton Fair in Guangzhou (April, 30 min by train) pushes hotel prices up regionally. Hotel prices are 20% below autumn peak.
Summer (Jun-Sep)
Hot, humid, and typhoon-prone. July and August hit 35°C. Typhoon season peaks in August and September. Flights get cancelled. Hotels discount 30-40%. If you come, plan indoor activities: electronics markets, malls, museums. Evenings at Shenzhen Bay Park are bearable.
Winter (Jan-Feb)
Chinese New Year (late January or February) empties the city. 80% of Shenzhen's residents are migrants who leave. Restaurants and shops close for 1-2 weeks. Hotels hit annual lows. If you come outside CNY week, January is mild and uncrowded. Good for budget travelers.

Cross to Hong Kong via Futian, not Luohu
Futian Checkpoint (Line 4) connects to Hong Kong's Lok Ma Chau. It is newer, cleaner, and less crowded than Luohu. Immigration takes 15-30 minutes vs 45-60 at Luohu on weekends. Bring your passport. E-channel for frequent crossers.
Visit Huaqiangbei with a shopping list
The electronics markets are overwhelming. Write down what you want before going. SEG Plaza for components and drones (floors 3-5). Mingtong Digital City for phone accessories. Bargain hard: the first price is 2-3x the real price. Cash gets better deals than WeChat Pay here.
Use DiDi instead of flagging taxis
DiDi (China's Uber) is ¥30-50% cheaper than hailing a cab. Drivers do not speak English but the app translates. Set your destination in Chinese characters. Futian to Shekou: ¥40-60. Futian to Luohu: ¥20-30. Airport runs: ¥80-120.
Take the Shekou ferry to Hong Kong Airport
If flying out of Hong Kong, skip the border crossing entirely. CKS ferry from Shekou to HKIA takes 30 minutes (¥260). You check in for your flight at the Shekou terminal. Runs 8 times daily. Book 1 day ahead on the CKS website.
Download WeChat and a VPN before arrival
WeChat is essential for payments, taxi bookings, and restaurant ordering. Set up WeChat Pay by linking a foreign credit card (now supported for tourists). VPN needed for Google, WhatsApp, Instagram. ExpressVPN works reliably in Shenzhen. Hotel Wi-Fi may or may not have VPN.

SEG Plaza and Huaqiang Electronics World are the main buildings. Prices start at ¥5 for cables. Go to the 3rd+ floors of SEG for the interesting stuff.
